So many trainers are focused on getting the quick fix for the dog's behavior. They don't understand that it takes this kind of time and patience to actually make a lasting change within the dog.

I really love the way you train dogs. You have a very good understanding that many trainers do not explain. Even the one I paid to somewhat train my dog.

I did the same thing with my daughter's dog (now my dog) exactly as you've done. I sat there and had him sit till he got tired of sitting and down he went. He would do the paw as well. It finally worked but took a few days of doing this to show him how to be calm.

The paw is something I hadn't recognized for what it is, before.

good stuff! going to start implementing this with our fearful rescue! have done sit on the dog, which this is a bit of a modified version i like better. and comment below about not requiring 'down' for scared dog is helpful!

Can I ask what the environment you were in was like? Do you sit in a closed room for 2 hrs per day with her just hearing the triggers in the distance? I have come a long way with my dog but he is very sensitive and fearful. I have gotten him out of fight which was his number one but not he can slip into flight when he is very bad. I feel I could do more sit stays with him in different environments as he always wants to be on the move. Would you recommend 2 hr sits at low threshold everyday or every other day?

You definitely want to be around some distractions.

@@methodk9 are you doing these sorts of setups for 2hrs every day with your dogs? Say for this one in the video for example?

I tried doing this with my dog, and held him accountable, but he did a lot of pushy demand barking ( while sitting). Would you correct the barking or just ignore it? It kinda seems like his vocalization is appeasement paw-like.

    • @methodk9

      I would correct the barking

How would that correction look like? Quick “nope”, and leash pop? I want to make sure I communicate to him clearly that the sitting is good, but the barking is not. One could also say that I should probably address his state of mind in that moment, but the vocalization issue is challenging for me to understand. Appreciate any feedback you may have :)

Interesting. So it's better to have them sit and get tired than to lie down.

    • @methodk9

It is very difficult to get a fearful or anxious dog to lie down on command if they are stressed. It is best to help them through the stress and allow them to lie down when they feel comfortable.

@@methodk9 The dog I'm helping with gets frozen in a down position if he's already lying down when loud noises like fireworks are occurring or if I ask him to lie down in that type of stressful situation. He wouldn't automatically lie down,of course; he'd rather run away. This week it's cricket players hitting the ball with a loud cracking sound. I can get him to lie down 20 feet away because he's obedient. Here's the weird part: the first day he heard the cricket players he got spooked and I took him onward to the park, where he remained refusing treats and not looking at me and not liking the walk. Then he saw a lady and her dog that we had met twice before. Immediately he was tail up over his back, jaunty, then jumped up on the lady when I was looking at her dog approaching. We went on our way and he immediately put his tail down and was all frightened again even until after we got home. Next day he wakes up OK. He does this for any loud noises, but I did get him to be able to walk on the sidewalk after years of not being able to, by constantly doing "v turns" and just zig zagging and reversing etc unpredictably for ten minutes and then all the way to the road, then we walked on straight ahead on the sidewalk with traffic , loose leash, and now he pulls ahead to get to that stretch of road if he's on loose leash.
It's really a puzzle to figure out how to help each situation. At home he just froze lying down when fireworks were going off and was frightened for a day or so after...until more went off..then more...

When a trainer puts a prong collar on a dog. It usually means they don’t know how to leash train without “biting” the dog.
