  • Some dogs struggle to pay attention because they are fearful, anxious, rambunctious, or just used to tuning out the handler. Here are some simple tips to help your dog learn to focus on YOU.

    i love that you give demonstrations with average dogs, not a mal or gsd that is already fully trained 😊

    Your explainations are so understandable! And it sounds so logical to train with his nutrition food instead of cherries on the cake. Thank you!!!! ❤

    Finally someone that explicitly explained the importance of having a working dog work for his food. My doberman puppy gets 75% of his daily food during training. The other 25% after he finishes training. For a rescue dog that has no discipline 100% of the food for work is totally appropriate. Food for work is why wolves became dogs. I am amazed how many people completely miss this foundational understanding.
    I like your videos because you are beautiful young lady, have a good voice and excellent demeanor. Combine that with your common sense approach and you are the very definition of what Ecclesiastes calls "The Good Wife" that is worth more than gold.

    I love your explanation of hand position with the treat! The vast majority of trainers try to shape the eye contact behavior with the food as a lure. Then you have a whole extra process of separating the eye contact from the treat focus, creating confusion. I think your method is so much better!

      Just saw a video where they were teaching just that(treat up at the face). I was confused because the name was K9-1. Glad to know this instead.

    Such a good explanation of dogs melds versus treats. I will rectify this and only give my pup his daily kibble, as he barely wants to eat it and its difficult for me to train him with it. All the treats will taken away today and see how he does and maybe gradually reintroduce them one at a time after he eats his kibble.

    Great video, already started with our terrier mix.
    Regarding the biting impulse, we've trained her to understand "slow" to take the food with care from hands, so when we are with friends or children of friends, they can feed the dog too without issues.

    The funniest part is when they're learning and their eyes dart back and forth or they even try to keep one eye on the food hand and one eye on your eyes.

  • @furryfriend3101
    @furryfriend3101 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So do you hold the look when he gets the food because usually as soon as the food comes there focus is on that. and I have done it while holding there food and let them look at me and they do but as soon as I want to give the food and my hand moves there gaze will be on the food agaim

    • @methodk9
      @methodk9  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That will always happen. Release them from making eye contact with you release marker and then feed.

    How can I transition from giving regular dinner time where I use it for this type of motivation and he understands this is his dinner I’m giving and not just treats. Unless they just pick up on that?

    • @methodk9

      Only feed during training. They will understand.

      My dog won’t take her meal from my hand. Probably because I have been giving it to her for “free”, leaving it on the ground all day. Do I just have to wait for her to get hungry enough to take it from me, or is there more of a transition?

    • @coloringroxs
      @coloringroxs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jessica C yup, just have to quit doing that and start either with having a set meal time or go right into only offering food during training. They pick up quickly!

    Do you have suggestions with very reactive dogs on leash (towards other dogs). She's a pit mix that is quite good with commands, except when she's on leash and sees another dog. She is fine with other dogs when she goes to doggy daycare.

    • @ib1ray

      Go to a park where they have dogs and stay far away and reward the dog when they're relaxed and then gradually get closer but keep the focus on you. A dog park would be better so that the dogs are contained but some people don't leash their dogs at the dog park and then they can run over to your dog which sucks but it's something that you may have to deal with so that would be the best probably to go to a dog park and then just get your dog used to seeing the other dogs far away and then just get a little bit closer and closer over the days and weeks and eventually he won't pay any attention to the other dogs if you pay him with food or treats when he is not engaged or interested or rather shows disinterest in the other dogs

  • @coloringroxs

    I am back to comment that I did this with my lab last night! He did what he already knew so well and he even stayed longer than before and I could actually go out of his sight longer than I could before without him looking for me... in the mornings doing this isn’t possible with time.
    I give him 2 cups in the morning 1 at night. If I give him one cup in the morning and practice walking with another cup mid afternoon a little bit before we go for our run will that food possibly effect him in any negitive way on our run? I.e his stomach will get upset? Then 1 cup at night to continue foundation work?
    Also have you had a dog where, when trying to teach something new they are overcome with extreme excitement because they don’t know what is being asked of them, even when o try to calm him down and walk him through the motions he seems to get overwhelmed and comes off as being high energy, unsure ness with frustration,,, how do you deal with this issue?

      It's not like you keep them in there all day geez! It's for training purposes and to be honest with you dogs need a place especially if they're high anxiety to unwind. Most of the time people use it to put their dog in there if they have company or if they're eating or something like that
