    As an INFJ, it can be difficult to grasp when people say "just be yourself!". Like can you be a bit more specific? Which part of me is the one you want me to be in this specific situation? Because trying to be all of the things that "myself" consists of at once in a social situation would be an absolute nightmare for everyone involved, including me. The best way I can describe the way I socially present myself is that I am a big dark stage with only one spotlight. The spotlight can only light up one part of the stage at a time and everything outside of the spotlight is in the dark. I can move the spotlight to show different aspects of my persona when I choose to, but I cannot make all of my persona visible at once. I can adjust the light when needed, lighting up the part that is necessary at the moment, but as new parts light up some parts that were in the spotlight before will go back to being in the dark.

    • @overpower3382

      The thing is... Technically... You can never _not_ be yourself. Sometimes you're just trying to hide your personality.

    • @ainikki7006
      @ainikki7006 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      I'm also INFJ, and this is a good analogy. In response to @overpower3382, about how technically we're always ourselves... I think that's cute. :) I think the skit in the video does get at the INFJ problem of presenting themselves authentically. We're natural people pleasers; we see through people and know exactly what they want. That also means we know exactly who they want us to be. Trying to ignore that and be our *authentic* selves in a social situation is hard for us for that reason. It also feels a bit disrespectful, like we're imposing, because we also tend to know what people *don't* want. And I can say from experience that most of the people I know want me happy-seeming and people-pleasing, not authentic.
      Is that healthy? Nope. And that is why I am an introvert that lives with an equally introverted dog.

      These explanations just helped me understand a friend!! Thank you! I’m an INFP and I’m pretty sure one of my coolest friends is an INFJ, we’re both “readers”, so sometimes we’re stuck in a weird loop of trying to please each other, which is tiring. If we can settle in to a conversation, usually about deep topics or spirituality or relationships or something, then we can finally relax. The spotlight analogy helps so much! Now I feel like I can approach my friend with a better mindset and help them be more at ease as well. Thanks!!

      Interesting... Sounds like a superpower... 🤔

    • @suzannexander
      @suzannexander ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yeah, as @Ainikki said, presenting ourselves in some way without considering others isn't natural to us. I might even go a step further and say part of the authentic me IS my people pleasing and flexible character, so if I ignored it, I would be just as unauthentic anyway... It's not as much about being authentic or not, it's just that all of me can't fit into my interactions, so I have to leave things out. Hence the spotlight analogy.

      I'm (INFP) genuinely like this to an INFJ friend. I just want confirm if this situation makes you feel awkward and if it's better for me to make decisions and let him compromise; or I should I still seek his views and opinions on any subject matter?

    • @LL-muddy1
      @LL-muddy1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +92

      @@CuriousWanderer_ it isnt really awkward. If a person is too directive, I feel like they are not interested in my feelings/thoughts. A good balance is best. I genuinely appreciate my friends concern. However, it can take a long time for us to come to a decision. We know eachother well enough now it's gotten quicker. My best friend and I are both INFJ's, and in 15 years of knowing her, I don't think we've ever contemplated a question that's "too deep". In high school, we'd talk about the boys we were crushing on, not in a "Oh he's so cute" kind of way, but more like "He's really matured since his dad had that heart attack". Anyone else would have though we were being pretentious, but we just liked getting to the root of people.

    I’m a pretty animated INTJ. When I’m really tired or with someone I don’t really know I tend to act colder, but around my close personal friends I like to have deep and meaningful conversations. This was accurate to a tired INTJ(also known as me, approximately 66% of the time). I generally tend to seem more alive during instances with those I have a solid connection with and I can be quite amiable at times. I love to laugh, though frequently I wind up pretending to with those I barely know. Being sociable is difficult, but it can be entertaining if approached from a learning perspective, and it can help me with recognizing(and then, interpreting) the social cues others project while in the midst of an overall meaningless conversation

      I forget which I am, not an INTJ, but I relate a good amount!! the only problem is that I am extremely extroverted, extremely shy and insecure, (I barely message my friends even when I do wanna talk about things) and my friends... never message me at all... and always third wheel me... one time they had a whole conversation in the discord server that I made, I came in late, said hi, talked, said stuff, was only acknowledged once when I said goodbye, had to go to sleep early. Nobody really... replies??? when I'm online and send messages???? They just vaguely talk about whatever I brought up, once I'm not, conveniently. I know it's not their fault, but it's annoying. Honestly, people don't reply to me in real life. Doesn't really matter how loud I talk. Plus, everybody always seems to get in what they want to say *right* after the previous person says it, and I end up AUDIBLY trying to say something, to only be cut off, for 2 hours straight. The only person that really seemed to want to hang around me was my boyfriend, and he hasn't contacted me in over 2 weeks, out of nowhere, after we were talking every day. I don't know what happened to him, but I really miss him. Plus, for some reason, it seemed like whenever we were both in the conversation, people seemed to actually, you know, let me speak. And I probably sound neurotic, or attention-seeking, and I'm 90% sure I am, but this still sucks.
      Edit: mill me now why cant I just type a normal coherent comment that doesnt turn into a tangent

Honestly, I really hope the myers briggs system becomes as common-place as colors are. That way I could just tell people my "color" and they'd go "Ohhhhhh...." - Then I could go "K...bye now." Would be amazing. Thanks for the content.

      @@iCraftDay Yes, I hate seafood. I used to tell people I don't like seafood, and they would say things like, "What about lobster?" or "What about [some freshwater fish]?"
      I've learned to say, "I don't eat things that come out of the water." I was surprised when I met someone else who says the exact same thing.
      -------
      I wasn't sure if this was quite true when I first thought of it, since I like cranberries (and the commercial shows them hip-deep in a cranberry bog), and I like rice (and rice patties get filled with water). So I had to do some research.
      Rice is grown just in dirt like regular plants, then after they grow a certain height, the field is flooded with water. But the part that grows the rice is never underwater, so I say it still applies. Also, the rice doesn't actually need to be in water to grow well. It does make sure the plants have plenty of water, but it's mostly for weed suppression.
      It turns out that cranberries don't grow in the water at all. First they go through the field and pick the best berries by hand. These are sold as whole fresh cranberries. Then they flood the field, and thrash the plants with machines to knock off the remaining berries. Since they float, it's easier to harvest them this way. The second group of berries are used for processed foods, like cranberry juice & cranberry sauce.
      The one food I can think of that I'd eat willingly & comes out of the water is water chestnuts, but I rarely have them, & could take it or leave it.

      Am I the only INFJ in existence that simply avoids human interaction because it's draining and not for any deeper reason? I think I've only ever worried about over-burdening someone in a romantic relationship, and even then, only in my current romantic relationship because I actually want to spend the rest of my life with him and I don't want him to think that any rough patch I may go through is my actual truth on a permanent basis. If I annoy a platonic friend, on the other hand, I'm golden -- because that means the hangout will be shorter. And in 99% of cases, I have little to no fear that I'll never hear from someone again, whether it's romantic or not. I'm a good person who gives good advice, and in my experience, friends and romantic interests alike kinda dig that. They don't really care if you're human from time to time.

    THE INFP IS SO ACCURATE... when I first read the article about INFPs, it was fun at first, like I literally felt like I was reading about myself on the internet. But then I realized that I hated how I accurate it was because I didn't like the fact that my personality was established on the internet. I always thought I was unique and I liked being unique. I liked the fact that no understood me because it made me feel special. 😂
    Damn thanks for the likes. Ironically enough, this much people like it when they relate to a person who doesn't like it when they relate to another person. That's a tricky one.

After you had your result we had to report to the corresponding table in a gym with info about our type. I got to the table with the other INTJ and we stood next to each other awkwardly reading from the same sheet of paper describing our personality type for about a minute. When we were done he said "sounds about right", I said "yup" then we sat and watched the other tables laughing and talking until the next exercise.

    I’ve only ever met a couple fellow INFJs (that I knew of). I found them pleasant and enjoyed the flow state conversations but got bored after a short while. I flow better with INTJs. I enjoy speaking with somebody who also uses introverted intuition as their first function, but uses it in a different way. It feels like a more well-rounded conversation. I also love talking to ESTPs and ISTPs, because we have the same first 4 functions, just in a different order. Again, we go at the same things, but from different directions. I struggle communicating with SJs as they rely so strongly on conventional norms, whereas I rely on things I drink subjectively through my intuition. I can appreciate their differences, but in my experience, many of them are just too opinionated about what they perceive as the right and wrong way to be and think for me to enjoy having them in my live. They have to be respectful that I do not think the way they do and that that is okay for us to have a healthy relationship.
