once the ball has been kicked the opposition cannot tackle him - unless the tackler was already committed to the tackle before the kick. Another point about kicking the ball forward is that any other player on the kicker's team, who is behind the ball when it was kicked, can chase after and collect the ball.

Important difference between rugby and American football is the ball is, almost, always live. If you have been tackled you can pass the ball. If you can't pass it, both teams will compete for the ball over you

Rugby World Cup, the Six Nations and The Rugby Championship are must competitions to follow. They get pretty special. Definitely my favorite field sport to watch even though i watch about 6-8 American football each week.

Fun fact nfl has roots in rugby, which is why there is a lot of similarities. Early rule books would use the word rugby interchangeably, then at some time Walter Camp from Yale changed the rules and parts of the game to create NA football.

There's a neat old BBC documentary from decades ago circulating on TH-cam about the rugby team Barbarians, about 30 minutes long. The Barbarians is a famous invitation-only touring team that seeks to play open, expansive rugby for the pleasure of it. Something of the romance of the game shines through in that documentary.

Rugby actually tends to be safer than NFL because of the lack of protection. People tend to be more cautious with tackling technique as a result because they try to avoid injury.

You can only tackle the guy with the ball. Above shoulders is considered a high tackle and can result in a penalty or sending off.

  • @chuckyboy6977

The only player that can be tackled is the one with the ball in his/her hands. There maybe late looking tackles when the player who had the ball has released the ball in a pass or kick, the law is once a tackler has committed to a tackle they are allowed to follow through with the tackle, enough though the player no longer has the ball. This is because once a player is committed to a tackle they are looking at the impact point and cannot see if the player still has the ball in hand.
In Rugby Union a huge part or the game is respect, respecting the referee and other players, being disrespectful can get you sent off the field. One of the most respected referee was Nigel Owens (now retired), there are some great videos of Nigel laying down the law to players that are twice his size.

You cant tackle if he is NOT in possession , hence why he kicked the ball to avoid being tackled

Only a person with the ball can be tackled. You kick the ball forward if you know you are about to be tackled. Usually the ball will go to the opposing side because they have defending players back or kicking is not as accurate as running with the ball as you have to touch the ball over the line to get a try before you ask why do they not just kick it all the time forward.

Play the ball not the man.
That is not to say that if you commit to a tackle and then he kicks/passes it before contact is made that you are expected to then somehow not make that contact. I don't know if you noticed but sometimes things happen very quickly out on the pitch.

Rugby is coming to the USA soon .. and a real world competition, not like the usual World Series …. Against Canada. Canada plays rugby, but so does Uruguay, Argentina, … New Zealand, Australia …. Everywhere the British went except India but they play cricket…. Even the French play rugby … but it’s been a long way since Agincourt …. And the Italians are starting to beat the 6 nations sometimes … that annual competition will kick in off soon. The USA has . a rugby team. The north of England has rugby League … a bit more rough around the edges than Union, which is posh. . Australia has Aussie rules football - more like Roman gladiators. The Irish have Gaelic football and shinty …. Football with big sticks

If american football players stopped tackling with their heads, they wouldn't get injured as much. Take those helmets off and all of a sudden it's not a good idea to lead with the head. A good tackle is shoulder into center mass with arms apart to wrap em up. All that "protection" nfl players wear from a young age impedes their ability or inclination to learn good (proper?) technique

When he kicks the ball forward, the ball becomes a 'loose ball' so then can be contested by whoever is in the vicinity, of course; the player who kicked the ball forward followed up, got lucky and scored.
