    I'm making myself a beauty dish very much like this one over the next few weeks, using the following:
    •Dish• 18" stainless steel mixing bowl
    •Mount• Very similar mount to the one used in this video, but a bit cheaper
    •Reflector• A jam strainer funnel without the funnel or strainer part
    •Light leak shield (Like the pizza tray)• 22cm metal cooker top cover
    •And a few nuts & bolts like used here..
    I just want to say thanks for posting this video and giving me some ideas guys!
    Cheers!

    Wow, I'm impressed! What I love about your design is - unlike so much DIY stuff - not only does it perform, it LOOKS good! Thanks for the tutorial!

    Hi Todd, great video! I'm having a hard time finding a 16 qt metal bowl. Would plastic work just as well? I figured since it's painted it doesn't rely on the reflection of the metal itself, and I could probably find a plastic bowl much easier (and probably cheaper). I know it wouldn't be as durable, but for the cost I'd probably be willing to accept that at least for a while. Thanks for the great videos!

    True, a diffusion sock would soften the light. Overall, I think it would depend on the look you're going for with the beauty dish, since a matte white beauty dish would still have a different look than that of a socked dish.

  • @toddowyoung
    @toddowyoung  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @wladius It would most likely give a hotter, more contrasty look. You'd have to make sure the spray paint was neutral as well.

    Hi Todd! I was very impressed by your making your beauty dish. I am in the market for one myself and would like to see if I actually could make my own. Question: The backet you used. Where can I get just the bracket? Is that possible? Also I noticed on the photos you took with your beauty light that the lighting was indeed very great. Was curious why you chose to blur the people in the background behind the lead singer. Shouldn't they all be sharp?

    Whats the difference from a silver Beauty Dish to a White Beauty Dish? would you recomend any fabric DIY to do a diffuser please?
    Many thanks Todd

  • @toddowyoung
    @toddowyoung  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Efficiency and softness of light are different things. Fine tuning the reflector for maximum output may result in artifacts, but it depends on what the desired result is.

    Hey in the detailed build instructions, you mentioned a link to a 20 qt mixing bowl on amazon. Would you happen to know what the diameter of that bowl would be? I saw that the 16 qt is 18 inches. Have you made one with a 20 qt? How does it work compared to the 16 qt? Thanks! Awesome design by the way and excellent photos on your website. Love it all.

    • @kaichinn
      @kaichinn 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      A larger beauty dish (or any light modifier) will give you softer light (the bigger the diffuser, the more softened the light) as it diffuses the light wider and covers more area.
      Hope that helps.

    thanks for this! I managed to built one myself but the problem I encountered is if I slot in the flash radio transreceiver below the flash, due to its length, I have to move the flash back, hence the flash can;t attach to the bowl.. :-/

    hello todd ..... I have a canon flash 580ex2 and I wish I could build a beauty like yours in the video .... I wanted to know, please, if you tell me the diameter of the large pot because I have found only 40cm .... then I wanted to know where to buy the pot smallest internal ...... always of steel?? thanks

  • @toddowyoung
    @toddowyoung  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    A 20qt mixing bowl doesn't have an overall diameter that's all that much larger than a 16qt bowl. You could most likely stay with the 8" pizza pan and adjust the distance to the bowl. But you might want to just get both size pans and see which one works the best.

  • @jamarjones4259
    @jamarjones4259 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey I love this tut can you guys tell me where I can buy the parts that you guys bought? I am having the most trouble finding the large mixing bowl. I really want like a 27 inch or so

  • @foodshipnine
    @foodshipnine 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should have tested it.. I wanted to see it on!

  • @toddowyoung
    @toddowyoung  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is true. However, I wanted the ability to adjust the light and fine tune it, which meant that leaving the screws unpainted was the much better choice. Still, I haven't noticed any issue from the bare metal screws creating any artifacts in the light output, either.

  • @THEsmitty70
    @THEsmitty70 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Conversely, if I used the 20qt mixing bowl, would I need to get a 10" pizza pan instead or just stay with the 8"?

      Paresh Pandit A grid? The grids for beauty dishes are normally plastic and snap on and off the dish. Would be no practical way to attach a home made one out of cloth-ish material.

    Hi buddy! I'd like ask about the size of that big bowl and the small disk? in my country some photo group tried to make the BD and the result is all about some bad light came out cos' size of small disk. They said like it has to be flexible with the bowl.

  • @toddowyoung

    It was be easiest of all if people just bought a cheap beauty dish, as they're readily available on Amazon, B&H, eBay, etc. Really, this project is simply fun and rewarding if you have the right tools.
