great idea, thanks for sharing, I find this Umbrella Box system very practical for set up and move around, however the fact that the light/strobe is inside, makes it really complicated to set the proper light because each time you have to open it, adjust it etc. Is a good piece. Well done!
that was by far the best DIY video i've seen for a softbox... i was wondering about the light too.... might be best used as a reflector that you shoot the light into
It's basically a DIY copy of the Westcott Apollo. The flight (flash) is mounted on a normal umbrella swivel and points toward the back of the umbrella (as it does in the large Elinchrom units like the Octa, Quadra and Recta). No interior diffuser is needed. (And it's not really needed in a good front-firing softbox anyway, where a bare bulb is used at the focus of the parabolic shape. But that means that the box needs to be built for the light, and not a "universal".)
I like the fact that you (attach it from the back- somehow... wish you would have shown how) don't have anything in front of the light source like others I've seen on YT. Cool! I think I could do this! Thanks:)
Cut a hole in one of the sides where you'll allow the light's head to pass through. The concern I have is that the umbrella is plastic. Wont the light's heat melt the plastic?
NOTE: a few small modifications will make this a good device. (1) don't cut the shaft that short, but do put something on the end so it's not sharp. You could dip it into liquid rubber/liquid plastic. (2) Make dual (inside & outside) diffusers using the extra remaining shower curtain material. (3) Since the shaft will be longer now, you'll now need to cut a hole in the center of outside diffusion material. This way you can mount the device to a light stand. (4) You'll need to make or add Velcro attachment tabs for the secondary diffuser inside the umbrella-box. (5) Attach a battery powered strobe bracket (with strobe slave) to the inside of the umbrella-box. (6) Finally you'll need to calibrate the WB/Color temperature of the diffusion material with the strobe you're using, then create a custom adjustment setting in Lightroom or Photoshop.
Umm... looks good but where would you place your speed light and how would you mount it to a stand??? Half job done here... I'll save the trouble and just buy it on Amazon.... Lol
If you are going to try this, do not use the regular spray paint used in the video. Krylon makes a line called Fusion that is designed to adhere to plastic. Regular spray paint will delaminate from plastic, especially if you flex it. Try adding the heat from a modeling light and it will be falling off in hours.
Ok guys.... Light goes thru one of the velcro flaps, with stand and umbrella mount. Connect the umbrella shaft, wrap and tighten velcro flap around light. Speedlight only, I would imagine....
he is missing to make a hole on one of the sides to insert the stand with the light Le falto hacer un corte en uno de los lados para poder meter el stand con la luz
Well ... If you take a look at professional softbox/umbrellas there is a hole on one of the panels with velcro where the stand will go thru. On the stand there should be umbrella holder thru which will pass the handle of the umbrella he just made. :) Simple as that :D
OK, if you haven't figured out how to add a light you just need to look at how the pro version is don. they add a slit on one of the sides and add a zipper or Velcro to close the slit. look up Octagon Umbrella Softbox and you can see what I mean.
I agree with the others ,, you dont show how you mount this to a stand , or light. what hardware you need .. you spent 35$ and some time , and you dont have a complete unit. and soft boxes have a inner diffuser also . And BTW your umbrella has 8 sides . hence the reason they are called octabox
everyone is pretty stupid that has commented on this video before me he showed how to make the soft box not how to to make the softbox with a light in it. if you wanna kniw how to put a light in it then use your brain if u have one and figure it out yourself. he gave what he offered he offered a softbox and he gave you the tips for it now go use your head for once and stop feeding of of other people and get life. btw good video bro
You could just purchase this on Amazon for 30 dollars and save yourself from all the paint fumes.. Just do a search for "Off Camera Photography Photo Studio Umbrella type 30" Octogon Softbox" $29.99...
this guy didnt put a light in it,,,hahahahah,,,very funny, what good is this if it doesnt have a way to put in the light,,,hahahah,,,no light just a picture at the end with it lit somehow,,,hhah,,,its a softbox alright,,,but it doesnt light up,,,how did he put the light in at end,,,maybe he laid a light bulb in it or he shined a flashlight on it,,,hahahha,,,i got to watch this again,,,heheh.
You should have called this video "how to spray paint an umbrella". You didnt show one fucking thing about how to put a light in it. I suspect because you just laid a bare bulb in it for the last shot
You could have spent less money and bought a speedlight brolly box from EBay. It would save you time and you'd have no worry about paint peeling. Not knocking your creativity and ingenuity, just saying you could have spent less money and time and gotten similar results.
Appreciate the creativity. Critics knows the price of everything, value of nothing. Keep it up.
The best diy umbrela that I've see
As everyone else asked... What about the light?? Where do you set the flashgun?
wow !!!! ......what an idea ........ soft box without light arrangement ......... wow.... wow... wow
Great, just one thing I missed out, how are you getting the light/Flash inside the Umbrella?
Your tutorial is the best one so far! Thank you!
great idea, thanks for sharing, I find this Umbrella Box system very practical for set up and move around, however the fact that the light/strobe is inside, makes it really complicated to set the proper light because each time you have to open it, adjust it etc. Is a good piece. Well done!
Great video! And your camera angles were amazing!
D'oh! How you supposed to fix a light? That's 12 mins of my life I'll never get back!
that was by far the best DIY video i've seen for a softbox... i was wondering about the light too.... might be best used as a reflector that you shoot the light into
I've thought about this exact same idea, but how do you mount the light (type of light) inside and how do you mount it on a stand (type of stand) ?
where's the light?
Where would the light go 🤔? The flash?
It's basically a DIY copy of the Westcott Apollo. Same question as the other viewers. How do you install the light?
very nice - but how can i fix the light source ?
Sort of left out the part about fastening the light on the inside. What light do you use and how is it attached?
I like the fact that you (attach it from the back- somehow... wish you would have shown how) don't have anything in front of the light source like others I've seen on YT. Cool! I think I could do this! Thanks:)
very nice but how do you attach the light
@ptlofts true, you could grab up an octibox just like that for about 30 bux, but i'm still a fan of a good DIY project.
Cut a hole in one of the sides where you'll allow the light's head to pass through. The concern I have is that the umbrella is plastic. Wont the light's heat melt the plastic?

the softbox, no entry for light bulbs
How do you get the light in there?
And how and where you put light bulb or speedlite flash?!?!
you did not show how you put the light inside and the mounting to tripod..
yes but now how to use the light ? how to put the light ?
The silver side looks great. It may be worth trying on a Softlighter, sice the Photek umbrella comes in white and not silver.
where do you attach the lights?
what about the light ???
Six sides...I see eight side...and how do you attach the light source...?
Aja lo haz echo la caja de luz y? no vi que lo hayas montado en le flash de estudio que pasó ?
Yes that's very nice but how do you attch it to the light and the camera?
Can you plz update us on how you installed the LIGHT?
lolol
What kind of light did you put inside? Also, how did you get it in there?
how well is the paint holding up? does it stick together and stuff if you leave it in your trunk?
You should make another video of How to install de lights, dont you think?
are you serious...............................So wheres the light.
You put the light inside it. The Velcro gives you the option to take it out and put it in whenever you want
But when it's hanging upside down the light will stay there and it will fall down
But.. when you close the umbrella, the attach goes off the tube, doesn't it ?
how is tha going to work
dont know
the light?
Great idea, but for half the price of your supplies I can order a ready made umbrella through ebay from China.
wont the paint crack and peel off soon?
How to install lights?
Genius boss you are 👍
Umm... looks good but where would you place your speed light and how would you mount it to a stand??? Half job done here... I'll save the trouble and just buy it on Amazon.... Lol
Read the description...
Svein Arne Grønnevik It doesn't say how to mount it to a stand, only how to put the light in there lol
How do you install the light bulb?
Did the paint ever chip or crack when unfolding or folding the umbrella?
So, where do you install the light or speedlight? It would be a good idea to show people that! Right now, it's just a useless umbrella!
My question is, what keeps this from melting?
It is all plastic, and good amount of light would melt it.
I could be wrong.
A Softbox without light?????
Thank you for sharing and posting this vid. Quite helpful :D

I wondered the same thing. It's hard to imagine where it would go without cutting into the top, but then the umbrella would not hold up. Hmmmm.....
Ok guys.... Light goes thru one of the velcro flaps, with stand and umbrella mount. Connect the umbrella shaft, wrap and tighten velcro flap around light. Speedlight only, I would imagine....
The light though?????
very nice thanks a lot Arabella.
Unless I missed something g. Didn't you forget to show how you prepared it for a light?
a nice addition will be to cut a line in one side of the umbrella and simple glue or sew a short zipper to it... that way you can cross the stand ;)
IDEA!!! just rig a couple of bare bulbs in there to the stems, just be careful not to break them when you unfold it ;))
he is missing to make a hole on one of the sides to insert the stand with the light
Le falto hacer un corte en uno de los lados para poder meter el stand con la luz
eso es k me di cuenta.....i took notice of this
This was a great video, thank you very much.
aaaah duhhh where does the light goooooo???
Ok Hey Buddy not for nothing but I think you use this umbrella for the rain cause it's not a softbox, it requires a light inside
My thoughts exactly!!!
Creo que es mas barato comprarlo. eso sirve si ya tienes los materiales.
si vos

He forgot to cut a 6" slit on one of the sides of the umbrella to fit a speedlite through it.
isnt spray paint flammable. im holding a bottle & it says its "extremely flammable". Im so not doing dis
I agree with the others ,, you dont show how you mount this to a stand , or light. what hardware you need .. you spent 35$ and some time , and you dont have a complete unit. and soft boxes have a inner diffuser also . And BTW your umbrella has 8 sides . hence the reason they are called octabox
the flammable part is the propellant and not the paint itself,,,once dry its A-O-kay
Great DIY, but, dude, what about the light!?!
I'm cheap and would have not bought a shower curtain liner. I use a white tall kitchen can bag split in 2 over a deep umbrella.
Why didnt you just buy a black umbrella lol. This is awesome though....thanks.
ever heard about Tripod?
o ok thankx.
everyone is pretty stupid that has commented on this video before me

btw good video bro
how sensitive is your ass
No light no party ! :-))))
Godox 32" Umbrella Octobox (with carry case)-$19.99!
Not to beat a dead horse but...ain't you missing a light homeboy? I think enough people are asking for it.
One light box kits are not that expensive the hunt the work the time by the time you are done you have spent the cost of a light box.
plus inhaling the toxicity of the cans
so light is above him :P
Eight!! the thing has EIGHT sides!!!
You could just purchase this on Amazon for 30 dollars and save yourself from all the paint fumes.. Just do a search for "Off Camera Photography Photo Studio Umbrella type 30" Octogon Softbox" $29.99...

Hey genius, there’s no light source! All you managed to do was ruin a perfectly good umbrella
Wow paint is so cheap in US...
oooh,,,ok,,i see how he did it,,,but im not telling,,,you guys will have to watch it again,,,,hahahahah.
Do I really want to watch you go shopping?
Hehehe... This is for those of you wanting to kill their plenty of boring free time. Just figure it out! :D :D :D
Um Ebay, for under 15 bucks.
Vale más el collar que el perro....mal mal mal
its got 8 sides!!!!

He attempted to make a softbox and he failed... and he wasted our time.
I hope this thing upped the lighting in your videos, cause the lighting is shit.
Way too much work... Buy one bro...
