It's extremely important to know, that these people didn't develope a "taste for human flesh" because they were in a extrem situation. They didn't kill each other freely to give their friends something to eat. They made a pact that if someone dies, the others are allowed to eat him. It was extremely intimate and a gift. They LOVED each other and they wanted to keep each other alive. I beg everyone to please read their books and memoirs because what they did for each other is beyond simple compassion.

Unfortunately, the event called 'the miracle of the Andes' is mostly known in the world because of this film, a completely distorted version of the real story. And even worse, most of the videos in English on the incident are based on this movie. The survivors find the way the facts and characters are depicted disrespectful, and call it 'the Disney version'.
In 'Alive', a lot of the facts were changed (not minor details) and others were made up just to give Ethan Hawke's character the role of the 'superhero', while the other characters are practically passive spectators who depend entirely on Nando's initiative. In reality, what took those young men out of the mountains was the extraordinary teamwork, the resourcefulness and the heroic actions of the whole group, including many of those who died in the snow.
The main leaders and strategists were the Strauch cousins, but as the survivors say, each one of them was a leader depending on the moment and the skills needed during the 72 days they were stranded in the Andes.

'Alive' is not the real story, it's just an awful adaptation of the book of the same name, in which a lot of the facts were changed and others were made up in order to give Ethan Hawke's character the role of the 'superhero' that saves the whole group almost on his own, while the other characters are portrayed as passive spectators. In reality, it was teamwork at its best and a chain of heroic actions what took them out of the mountains. The survivors dislike this film, and call it 'the Disney version'.

Sadly I have to agree. The idea is sickening, but in an area where nothing grows, not even a blade of grass, I would do what I have to in order to survive. Some hate the idea and I don't blame them. If the bodies were thawed I might have a harder time going through with it, but they were frozen solid thus doing away with much taste but still having nutrients preserved.

  • @Laurennn

One of the boys who hit his head and suffered amnesia from the crash watched as the others cut up flesh and said nothing, until the time came when he was offered a piece, he said, "it's like Holy Communion; when Christ died, he gave us his body so we could have spiritual life. My friend has given us his body, so that we can have physical life." This short, profound statement, eventually changed the minds of the others who had refused to eat.
This was an in extremis situation, none of us can possibly fathom let alone understand what they had to go through. Nothing grows where the plane crashed, no trees, no grass, no plant life, no animals, nothing. All that was there was the plane, rock, snow, and sky. They had literally no other options. All of them were Roman Catholics. They did not take this decision lightly. A priest came to visit the hospital where the boys were after their return; he told them flat out they don't have to confess to eating human flesh because they didn't do anything wrong or sinful by doing so. The Catholic church agreed and came out publicly supporting the boys.
They suffered more than any of us can imagine. But they made it out alive. The only way they could do this was by saving themselves.
Nando & Roberto climbed and walked almost 40 miles through the mountains to safety. They lived 72 days with nothing but eachother. Think of that next time you want to make judgemental comments.
I highly encourage you all to read Alive by Paul Piers Reed.

Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything” (Genesis 9:3). However, God specifies that the “food for you” does not include fellow human beings. People are treated much differently from animals: “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind” (Genesis 9:6).
Cannibalism is mentioned several times in Scripture (Leviticus 26:29; Deuteronomy 28:53-57; Jeremiah 19:9; Lamentations 2:20; 4:10; Ezekiel 5:10), but in each case, the practice is regarded as a horrible curse and inhuman act of desperation. Moses and other prophets predicted that, if the Israelites forsook God, they would fall into such awful degradation as to cannibalize their own children. These harrowing prophecies were fulfilled during the siege of Samaria during the reign of King Jehoram (2 Kings 6:28-29). @@andycross9840 thirdly you should recognize that this story of survival isnt rare. There are many survival stories. This one though features cannibalism and Hollywood producers like Frank Marshall really seized on that focal point in an oddly specific way. You dont have to engage this hypothetical becuase it wont happen to you. I guarantee you wont be faced with cannibalism or death. So it's very odd this is pushed in so much entertainment these days. Also Frank Marshall produced the Twilight Zone film in the 80s.... he notoriously (with wife Kathy Kennedy and Speilberg producers) underpaid Vietnamese child actors and broke child labor laws and with idiot John Landis they botched a special FX shot and the 2 kids with actor vic morrow got decapitated. What did Frank do? Remember Frank directed this film Alive. Well...Frank fucking fled the USA to evade the authorities and the trial. So fuck him and his movie and anyone who imagines themselves eating humans. Sick fucks.

Initially, Numa Turcatti did eat human flesh, but around a month later, he hurt his leg, and the wound became septic. As the days went by, he started losing hope of being rescued, more infected wounds invaded his body, and he couldn't put up with eating the dead bodies any more, so his health deteriorated rapidly, and he died on day 61. He wasn't part of the rugby team, like most of the passengers, and barely knew some of them.

Probably,a true cannibal person would eat alive humans;they ate already dead ones. In addiction, they had no intention to murder, they only wanted to survive. The two things r deeply different, according to me.I respect & really admire them. They r the notion of the word "heroes" to me & watching this movie makes me feel closer to the ones I consider faithful & very wise men

When you think about it, there's nothing intrinsically wrong with cannibalism. It's merely intrinsically wrong, due to social norms. In cases of emergency, such as this, it would seem to be the logical thing to do.

What makes this so much worse is the fact that there was an abandoned hotel with food medical supply around 22km away from the crash site. Today with our technology, you could find out in a matter of minutes. Back then the uncertainty made a journey in any direction a high risk endeavour.
