Ideally, if you want to create a helicopter, it's considered best to not have the blades clipping through each other. That's why existing twin-rotored ones have them at different heights.

it's pretty easy actually. just make sure that your max rotor angle is about 5° and also with 2 rotors you have to change the "design" of the rotor blade to match the opposite rotation direction :) also have a reaction wheel to make it yaw and use the different probe core control directions if it behaves incorrectly.

  • @olliejobson6371

So for single rotor helicopters, there’s always a counter rotor at the back of the heli which prevents the craft from spinning when in flight. With time people began to make double counter rotating rotors instead because it saved space and the two counter rotating rotors cancelled out the spin, leaving behind a net upwards force.

      fast wing go up
      therefore spinny wing go up
but hard to spin when nothing to spin off of
little tail spinny wing pushes air so you can push a big spinny wing to go up
or two spinny things can push air and each other, to go up
except what you end up with is a nonlinear system of controls that all counteract each other. even sas has trouble keeping up with rotorcraft! it's great fun.

  • @boyvol6428
    @boyvol6428 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Ok, i did helicopter myself...
2:38 here you just need to decrease some angle of blades. I dont remember which one. Or turn off SAS. The blades are changing their angle according to pitch/yaw/roll values. This shit is kinda glitchy. Your copter was great before SAS broke in and started messing with controlls.

All you need to do is make a 2 or 3 prop main rotor, a few reaction wheels if you so please, and a tail rotor. It's going to take some finnicking to match the tail rotor's torque to counteract the main rotor, but you'll get it eventually. ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU DEPLOY YOUR PROPS EXTENDED AND IN THE RIGHT CONFIGURATION, and then just bind extension angle to main throttle, and bingo, you got a helimochopter!

I scrapped the save file later because i was so pissed and didnt play for a whole week. Helicopters are still one of the many dark corners in ksp i will never want to touch again.

Guess I'm one of the select few, they're not actually that hard, but you can't have only one propeller. Real helicopters have a main prop and a stability prop at the back, and drones have multiple props that rotate in opposite directions, e.g. Two clockwise, two counterclockwise. The trick is that the angle of the board itself has an effect, you don't even need to "extend" the propellers

They made it way easier in 1.9. I don't even use the controller (though I probably should learn the damned thing for more complex robotics). Since 1.9, they've added cyclic controls built right into the props and propellers, now I've actually made a single rotor helicopter that can ACTUALLY be contIrolled without having to make an entire swash plate from scratch. I've noticed there's apparently now an option for differential throttle control, FINALLY, that'll be great for rotating engine VTOLs. They also removed guess work for running your props efficietly. Now right clicking on them and pinning that open, it shows you the blade's angle, angle of attack, and an estimation of its thrust. I used this on a 2.5 meter electric ducted fan design to figure out that my fan produces about 30kn of thrust (presumably per blade) at an angle of attack of about 10 degrees, up to an aircraft's maximum speed where the aircraft can't go any faster, and the blade pitch is between 40 and 55 degrees depending on the drag of the plane. This made tuning the plane way easier, instead of feeling around blindly for the ideal blade pitch. I do wish blade pitch had an auto option, but this is the next best thing. And it's not far off having to manually control blade pitch in planes with contstant speed props today in the real world.
Personally, I love that they did it this way. Annoying at first, with NO useful controls to make props, and only using wings and control surfaces for blades, and yeah, at the time, I was thinking the same thing. Now though, I'm glad they did it this way. Now that they've finally addressed the control issues, the lack of engine information, and finally added a wide array of parts to build stuff with... I'm glad they went this route over the old mod part routes of making whole engines. This way I get to make MY OWN prop engines any way I want. Oh, you want an electric engine that looks like a radial, with 24 blades? Wacky, but you got it.
I think the lack of good prop engine parts and control from the getgo turned people off of the robotics parts. I predicted that as well. When they first announced robotics, my first thought was "they better include differential thrust, cyclic cotrol, and good prop controls, or people are going to find props and helicopters annoying". And here we are, only just now getting those things, and there's already people who have previously given up on the DLC since they werent included day 1.
Anyway, I'd try it out with the new updates guys. Props are way easier now.

The stock KSP rotors are implemented extremely badly. While getting "one" to work is fine, adding a secondary counter-rotational set is the equivalent of a soup-sandwich. Case in point, reversing a rotor, its facing or even the motors direction does not (always) reverse the direction of thrust. (even with symmetry removed) Worse yet, as speed increases the pitch of the rotor-blades must become shallower to produce any meaningful thrust. The end-result is that rotors / propellers are useless in KSP.
