Regarding Oriental - as an Asian man who has experienced racism, being called all sorts of nasty names, especially as a kid, I think using “Oriental” to describe a style of perfumery is 100% fine. We need to look at the motivation behind saying a word, not just the word itself. When someone uses oriental to describe a fragrance, it’s obvious to any sensible person there’s no racist or hateful motivation - people who are offended are simply clouding the *real* issues at hand involving race and equal opportunity. Orientals are my fav style, and I use that term freely when describing fragrances and encourage others to as well.
@willowwookie9614 There are far worse words than oriental, people just love being offended and get a kick out of policing other peoples words/actions. If the man says he isnt offended, why try find offence? Youre a lefty aren’t you? 😂
@@sssoundslike2259 I just find it hard to believe that someone used oriental in a racial abuse comment and yes I agree that nowdays people are quick too take offence too everything.
As an oriental man, the vocab "oriental fragrances" isn't offensive to me at all. It's fragrances with notes and raw materials usually associated with our parts of the world. It's a thing to be proud of.
💯 it's reflected in the food of Asia as well. Without that beautiful history and culture, the world would lose so much variety in cuisine, especially in spicing!
As an EurAsian woman, I love Oriental perfumes & see nothing wrong with the term. People need to get a life & quit cancelling things. I love how you educate & teach us about the composition of a scent. Thanks for all the work you do with your videos & all the best for 2024!

lol I’m half Korean and my mom uses the term regularly. People these days will find anything to get offended by. The new generation is about as soft as baby $hit
It amazes me that diversity can no longer exist because it’s even offensive to suggest someone or something comes from a specific part of the world. It saddens me that culture for all races is dying instead of being celebrated 😢
Layton changed my entire fragrance world. I had about 60 designer fragrences. All kinds of different scents for all kinds of different occasions. After I got Lauton I was in love, and blind bought Layton Exclusif. That blew my mind completely, and changed my perspective in a unimaginable way. Now I've been selling of most of my designer fragrances. Wearing Azzaro, Paco Rabanne, Hugo Boss etc just doesn't intrigue me at all anymore. Of the 60+ I have an loved, only 25 or so is even tempting to use again. This is the start of the next chapter in my fragrance journey. I can't wait to see where it takes me. I'll be a PDM and The Laytons especially. It was my gateway fragrance. I can't recommend the two enough.❤❤
Perfumes from designers where the first priority is clothes, jewelry, luggage, etc. cannot be good. I had to learn to understand that too. Im done with that. From now on it's niche only for me, where their first priority is fragrances, and ONLY fragrances. I wasted so much time and money with those garbage designer frags man.
I smelled a small sample of Layton. IMMEDIATELY put it on my shelf to buy a bigger sample. IMMEDIATE LOVE. I accidentally bought 2 5ml samples. Used BOTH of them up during the course of Fall/Winter. Prowled Jomashop until the big bottle was available for discount. Bought it, now I love it even more. The perfect love story. 15 frags in and Layton is still #1
Nothing wrong with saying ‘oriental’ because in this context of fragrances it’s a compliment. As for the fragrance Layton, this is the ‘Holy Grail’ in my view, nothing comes close in terms of an uplifting winter fragrance.
Imo Herod is the “Holy Grail” of winter fragrances. Don’t get me wrong, I own Layton and love it. But the sweet cinnamon and tobacco blended with the PDM vanilla in Herod is truly magical.
@bmoneybby Why not? Because the perpetually offended decided it’s bad and policed everyone else forcing us to comply. In a few years, they’ll be whining about something else. If you use a word with good intent, they you should be able to say what you want. Just use common sense. There is nothing inherently wrong with “oriental”.
I agree with you. Americans build on this, particularly virtue signalling that eases their snowflake views. Canada is the worst, followed by the US. You glance at someone there and you get sued. I used to love going to the States, but definitely NOMORE for me!

I have had well over 120 fragrances in my collection and my # 1 is Layton.Happy to see you give it a 9 but it wouldn't have mattered if you gave it a 3, beauty is always in the eyes of the beholder and I will always love Layton.
Yep I have Bleu de Chanel EDT, MontBlanc Explorer and MB Individual and a bunch of YSL's. YSL Y edt and YSL Y EDP ( maybe my second favorite fragrance in my whole collection) YSL Y Parfum, YSL L'homme and YSL La nuit de l"homme.
@@chrisyounce1815 nice. Some day I hope you can try BDC EDP or Parfum, and YSL Y EDP Intense. I didn't like Explorer, but I do like Explorer Platinum. Regular Explorer smells like you chopped down a pine tree then proceeded to roll around on the stump for half an hour. Lol. At least all I'm getting from it is a very woody, nettle-y smell. Platinum adds a little more zest to it, so it's more well rounded.
Anyone who thinks the word “oriental” is offensive is utterly ridiculous. Next, people will try to make the word “noir” offensive because it translates to black.
I'm Asian and while I'm not particularly offended at a neutral/positive use of the word Oriental, I just don't think it's a very useful term. As you said yourself it encompasses a wide range of accords/notes, from spicy to herbal to ambery, which I think makes the term sort of meaningless because it refers to so many different things at once. Even if it were taken to mean "any note used in Asia", the Asian continent is so massive that grouping all these countries together doesn't make much sense from a perfume perspective. Are the fragrance cultures of Russia, India, Egypt, Vietnam, and Korea so similar that we should be grouping them together? It would be like me trying to group together Canada with Mexico with Brazil just because they're on the American continents. When it comes to European perfumery we take care to make distinctions between French vs. Italian but "Asian" perfumery doesn't get the same thoughtfulness. The term Oriental was popularized by French perfumers due to an unwillingness to recognize the diversity of the Asian continent, and I think that the term has far outlived its usefulness. Oriental doesn't really communicate anything more accurately than just saying warm, spicy, sweet, herbal, balsamic, smoky, etc.
As an Asian person, calling someone Oriental vs something from the Orient is completely different. Nothing wrong with saying an “oriental” fragrance. Layton is one of my daily’s. Love this stuff
Oriental isn't offensive to or for an object, only as a lable for people. In fact, oriental probably fits for fragrance better than it does than for most things that's not a blanket or a rug. As you stated raw, original, as old as the Earth natural existing materials. As some stated about themselves, I'm part Korean, growing up my Father often would correct the differences when used out of context, especially toward people. Anyway, I'm very interested in PDM fragrances, hopefully will pick up a sample set before spending big. I have Suma Oriental Une Nuit it's a really nice scent.
It took me 3 tries to finally fall in love with this masterpiece! At first I didn’t understand the hype. But I tried it in the winter ON MY SKIN and the dry down blew me away!
I would bet money that whoever was the first person to decide the term "Orient" or "Oriental" was offensive, wasn't Asian, Oriental, Far Eastern, or any other synonym for those terms you'd wish to apply.
Just because someone says something is offensive it does not make them right . I would not worry about what a minority of snowflakes consider being offensive.
parfum de marly and initio are sister companies, was owned by a couple and then sold out... both houses diluted their perfume concentrations before getting bought out too... sad, my new bottle of side effect isnt same as the old bottle i have =/, looks like the sample vial you have is the newer batches with lower perfume % concentration...
a Korean American told me it was offensive when we use the word Oriental for PEOPLE, but perfectly normal when talking about things- e.g. furniture, decor, or cuisine
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the word oriental. It just means "from the orient" a.k.a. from the East. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a person or a perfume from the East. Also, personally, the word oriental evokes some kind of alluring exoticism and I find absolutely nothing derogatory in the word itself. And of course, being this my favourite family on perfumery, it has an even better connotation. And then there's the problem with the word amber. Amber is an accord traditionally made combining vanilla, labdanum and benzoin; but is perfectly possible to create an oriental fragrance without using any of these notes and likewise, just because a fragrance has an amber accord it doesn't make it an oriental fragrance. We already have the amber accord, the amber resin, ambergris and amberwood. If they now rename the oriental family amber as well it's only going to make everything even more confusing for people who don't know a lot about perfume.
Someone told me “oriental” is offensive when you say it about a person, but not if you’re describing a rug or spice. So…hopefully they were right because otherwise I’ve been offending all over the place 😮
Although skin is definitely better to test a fragrance on, most people also wear fragrance on their clothes. So a tester strip might show a bit of what the fragrance would smell on clothing.
You know when people say I have so many bottles but this is The One. Man, Layton stole my heart. Such a fire juice. Every time I smell it, I get weak. If I can keep one bottle out of my collection, this would be it. Such a versatile and beautiful fragrance. I never get tired of it. Just the whiffs keeps my mind fresh and the mood uplifting.

I know that I understand so little of what you do, but I could sit and listen to you talk about it for hours. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos!
I’m actually wearing Layton tonight for a Christmas party! My bottle is from 2018 and can’t speak about the newer batches but mine is sooooo dense and rich!
The new bottles are richer with maceration. I have a 2023 batch to which I allowed it to age 5 months. It’s last over 14 hours with a beautiful/rich dry down
@@unknown_matter1317yep, I’ve got a 2023 bottle and I was fuming with the richness and density that I remembered but I can safely say that after leaving it in my wardrobe for a few months it has improved. The same issue can be said of Herod. I had a sample and was disappointed in the performance but I used it today and it definitely improved as well.
It’s about time you reviewed this fragrance. I’m surprised you didn’t have the same reaction you had to Herod or even Carlisle. When I first smelled a 1ml sample of Layton, I instantly knew it was full bottle worthy. I’m in love with that scent and I know that NO ONE smells like me EVER. 3 sprays 4 sprays max if I spray it early in the day. It’s definitely my fall/winter superstar fragrance when I want to stand out from my signature scent (molecule 01…..which ppl smell on me but I spray 8-9 times). But I love Layton. My gf thinks it smells like a grandma, which we now affectionately nickname “Grandma”, but it makes me very happy and i proudly wear it on cold days.
Well reality is that the criteria for something "being offensive", is that someone takes offense by it. So it can be anything. If 1 billion people worldwide decided to have a problem with the word "banana", then I guess you could say it "was offensive" to say the word. But lets grow up people.
With its recent boom in popularity Layton has been getting a lot of hate. To me it’s still such a beautiful fragrance and one of the best I’ve smelled. I’ll always be a big fan of this one.
I've got that at the first wearings... For 1 h or more that was all... Now after some weeks and spraying more from the bottle I get the apple cinnamon more with some fresh nuances
When I first sampled it was a pre-reform and it had a brutal menthol note. I bought a bottle this year which I believe is a 22' batch and there is ZERO menthol
Aaron, you need to smell something like Orientica Royal Bleu next to Layton and then say if "the price is excellent"... high-end Middle-Eastern fragrances make those main-stream brands look like rip-offs
Every time I hear him say he has dark skin I shake my head. Might be lighting but the only thing dark about his skin are his tattoos. His face ears and hands are pale looking. Sitting next to Chris from Fragmental they have similar complexions. I don’t know. But as a Black man I don’t have an issue with citrus fragrances and I do have naturally dark skin.
I was so underwhelmed when I first smelled it, I only bought a sample because of the hype, never read the notes or anything really. And then every few weeks I started spraying it on my skin and smelling it, I really like the green apple note in it, it so nice and alluring, but I just can't seem to love the scent itself.
Well of course suggesting that defining a fragrance as 'Oriental' is offensive is just more 'woke' virtue signalling silliness, as if the word itself should be reserved for some explicit reference. Otherwise I guess 'Eastern' as opposed to Middle-Eastern, as opposed to Western would be safe enough for all the booboo flakes out there, though I wonder why whoever said so doesn't think 'French' (ahem) perfumery isn't offensive? Go figure...
People go out of their way to make up things to be FAKE offended about, i refuse to entertain these folks & prefer them to stay far far away from me & i will not change my speech to further propel their dilusions. 🙌🎆⛄🌲
Think the last person that used oriental as a slur died in 1967, to my - and I guess most - ears, oriental stands as a classifyer suggesting not only warmth and variety but also substance and quality, as such I think it would be a disservice to the region to get rid of a term that allows to market product at high tier and therefore worthy of a high price.
Sadly this fragrance doesn't so it for me. I always get the tea tree oil kind of smell from it, others mention it smelling medicinal or like Vicks vaporub and I agree, that's the kind of smell I get from it. I read in the comments someone mention it smells like a grandma and I completely understand what they mean.
Smelling them all in this sample set, I got to pick up the similarities via the raw materials (such as the vanilla) whereas with my Tom Ford sample set I am smelling a completely different style of perfumery from anything else iv ever smelled. What I'm getting at is, sample sets such as these are an opportunity to broaden ones understanding of perfumery thus understanding the brand or how the individual perfumer thinks.
They will have to change the name of the oriant express to the amber express lol. I agree aaron if a word twists you up just grow a pair. Another great review nice one bud.
In my memory, I believe you ranked Layton Exclusif as a 10 out of 10 or at least super high. It seemed like you loved the addition of smokier and perhaps more mature/sexy notes. Love this review, and I totally agree with you on the addictive factor. I don't like the price of PDM, and I know there are great clones, but there's something very addicting about these fragrances for sure. Thanks as always for your explanation!
This fragrance is probably my all time favorite - as a hobbyist perfumer it showed me the value of Norlimbanol which is used (in extreme excess haha) here
More people in the comments raging about the PC boogeyman than anyone actually saying oriental (in regards to fragrances) is offensive. There’s a certain group of people who loves calling others snowflakes but somehow create grievances that don’t exist.
If you like it then that’s all that matters. I received a sample of this from Fragrance Samples UK and I can confidently say I like it. At first I thought it was a bit too sweet for what I usually wear but the performance is great and the more I wore it the more I liked it. Not sure if id get a full bottle as I have others in mind that I like more but I’d say a solid 7.5/10.

My gf thinks it smells like a grandma, which we now affectionately nickname “Grandma”, but it makes me very happy and i proudly wear it on cold days.
yah, who care about others opinion, we use frag for our own satisfaction
Aaron Terence Hughes: How are you!
Nobody:
Me: I'm doing good Aaron thanks for asking.
Well reality is that the criteria for something "being offensive", is that someone takes offense by it. So it can be anything. If 1 billion people worldwide decided to have a problem with the word "banana", then I guess you could say it "was offensive" to say the word. But lets grow up people.
THANK YOU! for standing up to this cancel BS and having a philosophical backbone and stance. Don't bow down to these weak minded people.
With its recent boom in popularity Layton has been getting a lot of hate. To me it’s still such a beautiful fragrance and one of the best I’ve smelled. I’ll always be a big fan of this one.
I’d be so interested in some Le Labo reviews by you. Think all the ones on the internet are more coming from a consumer pov vs. your expertise.
I love Layton, parfums de marly in general rarely disappoint.
What in Layton gives the menthol note. Seems some people don't smell it in Layton, bt it's pretty much all I get 🤷♂️
Yes, a huge menthol note in it
I've got that at the first wearings...
@@derrickarmour Mine is an old batch and the menthol is very strong and lasts for hours.
Aha, that's interesting @@derrickarmour
Oriental is only offensive if you’re using it towards a PERSON. Oriental is a reference used for objects.
Aaron, you need to smell something like Orientica Royal Bleu next to Layton and then say if "the price is excellent"... high-end Middle-Eastern fragrances make those main-stream brands look like rip-offs
Idk if im the only one but i cant smell layton like at all i smells a bit of the notes but mainly dont its wierd cant smell it even upon spraying
I love Oriental fragrances and notes. Love your take on this and love you!
My tastes in fragrances has changed so much since I went down the rabbit hole. I use to only like fresh now I’m much more attracted to sweeter scents.
i need you to test Blonde Amber by Clive Christian. curious to see how you like it
Have you tested parfum de marly ojan? With Christmas here it would be perfect for a Christmas video.
Here’s an idea: choose not to be offended✨
Don't listen to the nerds who are offended br words. THEY'RE WEAK PEOPLE.
"We need to get busy"
Brilliant!
The Apple note is absolutely amazing in Layton
Unlike most, I absolutely hate Layton.
Nothing wrong with saying Oriental...people need to find other ways to be offended.
Nothing wrong with the term oriental in fragrances.
Oriental means East, Occidental means West. Fine to use.
I love Layton... it was my first niche quality fragrance and is still one of my favourites.
Merry Christmas Aaron. Surely oriental is only offensive if it refers to people? This is a way too oversensitive world.
Sadly this fragrance doesn't so it for me. I always get the tea tree oil kind of smell from it, others mention it smelling medicinal or like Vicks vaporub and I agree, that's the kind of smell I get from it. I read in the comments someone mention it smells like a grandma and I completely understand what they mean.
ive worn layton several times. always smells like cough syrup going on but dries down really dark blue
Omg y’all need schooling oriental is 100% a region!!!!! As long as your not calling someone oriental it’s fine 🙄.
What’s wrong with people when we can’t use old geographical terms like ‘Oriental’.
If Oriental is offensive then let’s cancel everything because everything offends some body. I hate all this cancelling nonsense.
I'm Chinese and I never think the word oriental is offensive at all. People need to get a life.
They will have to change the name of the oriant express to the amber express lol. I agree aaron if a word twists you up just grow a pair. Another great review nice one bud.
Layton is something special in my opinion. Definitely in my top 5.
This fragrance is probably my all time favorite - as a hobbyist perfumer it showed me the value of Norlimbanol which is used (in extreme excess haha) here
I think this woke culture needs to b ignored. Oriental is no way offensive word to anyone even from the East or far east.
When I hear oriental I think cardamom , oud, non American spices
Save some cash and get detour noir. Inferior but still great in the air
Would love a video of ATH just talking about himself and inspirations. Such a interesting person
More people in the comments raging about the PC boogeyman than anyone actually saying oriental (in regards to fragrances) is offensive. There’s a certain group of people who loves calling others snowflakes but somehow create grievances that don’t exist.
Sounds like something a snowflake would say 🤔
@@witness445I’m sorry my comment offended you. Are you ok?
LOL! I love that your mad . Stay "woke." Have fun at the drag show...
Yup
@@DemocratsRDemonsyou seem stressed. Maybe a bud lite will chill you out buttercup.
Just keep making fragrances, Aaron! Looking forward to when you're restocked.
Oriental is not offensive, its a great word to describe a people from a part of Asia.
Controversial but i dont like layton, i find it a bit feminine, layton exclusif is better
Aaron, please review Apres L'Amour by Thomas Kosmala. Im having trouble deciding what to think about it. Your professional thoughts would help a lot.
@@thebizness5596 I don't smell sweet, I smell straight musk. Br540 is sweet
Oriental is only offensive if you call a person or people 'oriental'
I came here for the review and stayed for the master class
the background music is very well done! Aaron you have unlocked something ive never realized. It actually has palatable listening experience!
Soon black pepper will be offensive. Black pepper matters lol
How can u say that? 😂
Pink pepper is way more offensive! If you like pink pepper, that means you don't care enough about black pepper. How dare you?
You sir have gained yet another fan👏👏👏
The day has come i cant believe it
oriental is not an offensive words, way too many people are way too sensitive and easily offended now
