- Welcome back to JCC! Today, we are opening two 1980 TOPPS basketball packs! These could contain a Larry Bird rookie which just sold for $861,000 this month. Let's see what's inside!

sometime in the 80s, these cards were in Halloween packs, 10 packs in a bag for 50 cents.. my buddy and I bought all they had and I had hundreds of the cards, probably 50 Bird/Johnson cards or more.. sold them as a lot to a flea market dealer, didn't keep one

I’ve opened Topps wax packs starting with 1978 Football. The packs should open fairly easily without tearing. Also look for wax stains on the card that was touching the back of the pack.

I know I have one of those Bird/Erving/Magic cards, maybe two. Have to dig through stuff at my Dad’s house. Guess I should get those to PSA.
A few things to consider- The packs looked too perfect and the corners of the packs too neat to be tampered with... You pulled a Larry Bird which would not have been in the packs if they had been searched. The way they opened were a little sketch... Were the roller marks on the back in tack and did they line up? Also is the size of the gum consistent with what it was originally supposed to be? Those are things I would consider. Just my two cents...

Searched.
1. Theres only 1 card to take ( Bird, Magic, Dr. J )
2. All other cards regardless of value would be left behind. Thats why the "wrong" Bird rc was there for you.
3. 40+ yr old wax packs, like another comment said, would have ZERO resistance to being opened.
4. Gum was new. Not 40+ yr old gum.
5. Not 100% sure on this one but lm pretty sure the side you open would reveal the backs of cards, not a front card view (of the Bird)....
Those were resealed, wax packs open smooth, no tearing, even the super old ones

I have wax boxes I personally bought in store in 1991 that are also donruss factory cellophane wrapped so its not possible they have ever been opened ...... and every now and again I open packs up and some of them open just like this where the wrapper tears and you would think it was glued ... but wasnt ... just how it goes man ... some open easy and some dont
I know the packs are probably sold at a real high premium for the Bird/Magic/Erving lottery, but I would have loved getting the cards in the first pack.

@@aaronkosharskyswhiteknight5224 If you need proof just watch the video from 1:50 and notice his left index finger pressing against all of the top left corners. Then again at 2:07 to 2:08 look at the dent in his finger from pressure on top right corners of the card. Never ever touch the corners of a card if you care about them at all. They are the most likely to be damaged of any place on a card.
It was really well sealed to be a wax pack that old. Seems like it was resealed.

Probably resealed, especially from eBay. But you still got some really nice cards so who knows? I was surprised to hear you talking about Bird but no mention of Magic RC or maybe I just missed it. When I was a kid, In 88 a buddy and I would go to the card store and you could get all basketball packs from about 76 to 88 for no more than $1.25 (yes, even 86 fleer, I think they were .75 at this point.) We’d go in with $20 and get a couple packs of each. Unfortunately I always skipped this set because I hated to triptych cards. Oops! He’s got the sweet Bird Magic Dr J though, I bet it’s in great shape too.
Always love hearing stories like that from back in the day! Wish I could go back in time and buy the packs at those prices 😂
Looks like an awesome experience. Whether they've been tampered with, one can only guess. What I did notice for a split second might tell you the answer. The Larry Bird card, on the surface, looked to have a substance on it. From what I think I know, wax packs were heated to seal. Thus the substance would not be there in what it appears to me. There would be gum stains, which is another point that the gum didn't look aged at all and would be browning at almost 45 years old. In any case, thanks for letting us watch. Aloha

when I was a kid these was very unpopular hardly anyone bought them! even me now look at them!

Definitely searched and resealed. No way wax on wax melted peels away like that. That’s glued on. Plus the gum usually comes in many pieces

Wax packs just slide you finger and they open easily. Those look resealed with some modern paper glue
not all of them open easily as you say ... I have 1991 donruss wax boxes that I personally bought from the shop in 1991 that are all factory donruss cellophane wrapped and every few years I open 1 up for fun and some of the packs are very hard to open ... you would think they were glued the way they tear off... so that whole "they should open easily" theory is false. dont get me wrong a lot of the packs opened up very easy and smooth but alot also did not.
You need to return that shit. Wax pack don't rip apart when you open them. That first pack was completely opened and glued shut. You got ripped off. Hahaha.

The packs looked searched and resealed. When you angled the Bird in the light, I didn't see any trace of wax on the card. Also there was no gum sugar bleed through on the back of either card.
Definitely resealed. Those should almost fall open. Too much effort to open them. They left the Bird on the back in hopes of someone pressing and thinking they were legit. Question is, did you feel any wax on the rear card?

My thoughts exactly when the bird was right on top. It's to throw you off. That's a nice bird rookie and I would be happy but it's not the bird Johnson Julius card that everyone wants.
@@johnschwartz9791 right, these packs are hundreds $$$ that Bird can be found for around $50. Leave some decent cards and people will keep buying. That's what I figure the seller is doing. The stubborn wrapper and the broken brand new gun are huge red flags.
Packs are never glued wax is sealed with heat. Why there called wax packs. That being said they've been re sealed

There's no way a 40 year old pack rips when you opening. They should've opened very easily. These have definitely been opened & sealed back up.

i have a friend who owns four magic/bird rcs that were pack pulled. he says the sequencing of the packs from an unopened 1980 topps basketball box is pretty simple. he says all he has to do is open a couple packs, then he would know exactly where the packs of the magic/bird rcs are. anyone know if this is true?

Hated these cards. Very stupid idea for kids. Of course the kids separated them and the smart adults kept them intact. I probably didn't buy Topps basketball again until 1994.
