"The high pitched scream of the elder gods servants, the old ones, a sound at the edge of hearing" Splat: "Oooh, like the electric hum when a TV is on!"
dude, that TV sound is something I heard till i got past 35 years old. Normally it's just kids who can hear it since they are not to damaged yet. So good hearing
it's coil whine from switch mode power supplies, put your ear to your GPU when it's under load, you'll hear it. Especially if you are generating a lot of frames on low raster load.
When I was young, I could hear my parents' bedroom TV with the volume off all the way on the other side of the house. I'm 53 now, losing hearing slightly in the left ear, but I can STILL hear the high pitched hums of some light bulbs and electronics. That and my lifelong tinnitus. My last hearing test showed I had amazing hearing at both ends of the spectrum, but normal range was diminished. Guess I'm just lucky like that. 😒
9:45 The sound everyone was hearing from old TVs is the flyback transformer. Transformers are usually an iron core and have a constantly building and collapsing magnetic field around them, so the core is constantly flexing because of the changing force. Since they're usually only held on one side, this means they tend to vibrate sort of like a tuning fork at whatever frequency the field is running at, in this particular case 15.75 kHz, which is the frequency at which horizontal lines were traced on old NTSC (the standard used in the US and Japan) televisions. The vibration gets worse as the TV aged and the transformer loosened up. 15.75 kHz is at the edge of hearing for humans so most people didn't notice. I certainly did.
The high pitched noise you hear (I hear it all the time also, musicians ear) is "Sympathetic Resonance" vibration, like what happened with the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. It's caused by the small transformers within an electrical device vibrating at just the right frequency (giving the device a small tap will usually stop it)
So weird that I finally played a game BEFORE it showed up on your channel. Normally, I come here to find whatever obscure thing you’ve found that may look interesting. My only feedback to them was to add variant combat. They are already playing with the obscure “strange” otherworldly plot device, use that to make combat more than just firing cannons like it’s boring real life. Have like Tentacle chain hooks that tether you to enemies, have the ability to summon eldritch horrors, etc.
"there needs to be more broadsides" needs to be installed in the top rank of game canon. You must be able to pet the dog. You must be able to unleash broadsides.
This obviously needs more work, but for a pre-alpha, I think it shows a lot of promise. I definitely like the Sunless Sea vibe. I'm going to keep an eye on this one.
Your frustration with the grain getting spoiled in transport is actually a fairly common issue, but at least the game is merciful and lets you do a partial delivery. I worked with a trucking company once and recall driver who had his entire shipment of about 20 cases being refused by the buyer because 1 box got damaged in transport. The end result was that the trucking company had to pay the driver plus the expenses related to the truck, and got stuck with a bunch of drink mix concentrate.
@@raidermaxx2324But every aspect of the game is very clearly heavily inspired by both Sunless Sea and Dredge? Maybe consider for a moment that you're just being a contrarian?
Looks pretty good, looking forward to seeing the finished version with the combat effects and exploring the rest of the world. Tons of potential I think.
@@SamBirney A friend of mine was visiting while I was working a night shift. I came home for lunch and I heard a whine like a TV was on. He said he wasn't watching anything, so I looked around. Turns out he'd plugged in his old camcorder to charge the batteries, and it had turned on. It was one of the old fashioned ones that still had a tiny CRT for the viewfinder instead of an LCD. It was buried under a pile of his clothes down the hall and behind his room door which was closed, yet I heard it plainly.
A gargantuan world. But miniscule worldbuilding. I expect this to grow into something spectacular. Like Sea of Thieves, and they need SHANTIES! Wishlisted!
Please no shanties it'll completely ruin the immersion on this type of game. They fit games like Black Flag where you're actually using the keel while your crew man the rest of the ship but not on these kinds of games where your PC is pretty much just the ship and your crew is a resource that can run out
@@charles_teak Also shanties weren't really a thing anymore after steam engines were invented. You can see the ship chimney, right? "The switch to steam-powered ships and the use of machines for shipboard tasks by the end of the 19th century meant that shanties gradually ceased to serve a practical function. Their use as work songs became negligible in the first half of the 20th century."
Been itching for a another sea faring game that isn't too heavy on the tactical combat, this looks tasty to wishlist! And their playtest is even open! Look forward to cutting my teeth on it.
" THAT " game that lets you pull your ship up next to another and let loose with your fifteen cannons is called war of war ships. It's a free warship simulator that's been around for quite a while. It's fantastic.
from the look of it, each cannon only fire when its lane FOV goes complete red (as opposed to part red). So they all fired on one side because all lanes went complete red on an enemy
I know the TV pain. My partners upstairs bathroom has this super weird alternating tone that sounds like a distant siren. I can't hear it from any other place and can't figure out what it is. The vibration frequency sounds like it's maybe a capacitor charging and depleting, but I'm not sure.
I hear that tone some electronics make too! I was staying in an AirBnB recently, and I found the router hidden in the corner of the room because I could hear it buzzing when I was trying to sleep. :/ Pretty sure it's something in the power supplies.
This game is very obviously inspired by Sunless Sea. It seems much more player friendly though; less obtuse language and quicker gameplay. And I say that as someone with a hundred or so hours in Sunless Sea.
Sunless Sea + Dredge, huh? Could be fun. I'd like better UI, like the map being more see-through, and a horizontal compass at the top of the screen instead of the top-down one down in the corner.
7:20 ... you forgot "Fortunate Son" 🪖 lol ... oh yeah, the peg-leg sore knee thing, normally be a stump ending above the knee, i.e, ain't no knee left no more 😬 cheers for the play thru Splat, liking the look of this one - like already said, Sunless Sea + Dredge 👌
I hear ya, man. It would be so cool if Splat had done an hour ten minute video on the game, like two weeks ago. Sadly, as we all know, Splat absolutely despises Stalker and has vowed to never ever ever play any version of it ever. Sorry.
I wonder if Sif is also a typo, and it's meant to be Sid 🤔 but yeah, I'm kinda biased on that one 😉 but would kinda make sense, I've not heard the name Sif before, also can't think what it could be short for?
I don't see why you would since this game has no connection to either. It's clearly very inspired by them, but it's not part of the series or made by Failbetter
I'm /still/ playing Sid Meier's Pirates!, to be honest. It really bums me out that there's been no real successor. This doesn't look bad, curious to see where it goes.
I remember there was a Pirates Of The Caribbean game some 20 years ago, like 3rd person RPG style with TERRIBLE controls (LMB to walk etc.) but it had decent sea battles (with broadsides) and I will never forget the stormy seas with giant waves and lightnings and so on. Sadly, the only impressive thing about this game.
This game actually looks pretty well made, probably giving it a go thank you splat

So this is basically Sunless Sea but outdoors.
Exactly what I was thinking, delicious friend.
Like a clone of sorts.
I mean, if that's your first encounter with the genre. Really, "sea of horrors" is a pretty old trope, the Unterzee is just a recent iteration of it.
its just Sea

The sound of your hearing coming from the TV is the low hum/whine of vibrating magnetic fields caused by flowing electricity.

I used to hear it too, but only with CRTs.
OMG! I'm not the only one! As a kid I could always hear the CRT monitors. It's rare to find another who could.

The Sid M Pirates game was fun when you had an OP ship and just unleash your broadsides and laugh maniacally, especially if firing grapeshot.
This really reminds me of Sunless Seas, even down to the UI.
