hahah I loved the alarm and the "forgot where I was" so relatable though! 😂🙌🏼 And great review, I still haven't read this book but I'm planning to do so soon!
HAHAH I was so taken aback by my own alarm tHAT I SET MYSELF. Thanks for watching!! I hope you end up liking the book you'll have to tell me what you think!
"Did they send me daughters, when I asked for sons?" very bad singing ensues. I caught that Mulan reference. 😁 I think I'm on the same page as you when it comes to miss having friends in my long life. I would be devastated if they no longer remembered me or any of the things we went through together. How lonely of an existence to be the only one with those memories. I'm still debating on whether I want to read or not, but the fact that it has an ending that will keep you thinking about it has me leaning more towards reading it now. 📙
How much the book focused ONLY on Addie not being able to fall in love was my BIGGEST gripe!!!! If you do read it, you’ll have to let me know how you feel about it!!
I've been so frustrated with the amount of books that focus in not finding "true love" or this being the only main plot we get lately, and also all the potential we have in found family and friendship struggles is being ignored for sooo long so I think I'd also be frustrated with this book, I still wanna read but yeah I was expecting more approach on the struggles of not having friends and seeing your family continue on living without knowing who u are
Still want to read this book, but I can definitely see myself not liking it as much as it’s reputation as well. I think you did a great job breaking this down!!
I appreciate your critical review! I think I’ll still read it early next year, but it helps drop expectations in certain ways which is good. A lot of times, I watch A+ reviews on stuff and then the bar gets placed so high that I’m underwhelmed. It’s almost a love/hate thing with seeing soooo many outstanding reviews of it.
Omg I thought I had replied to this I wonder if youtube deleted it..............suspect. Anyway, I agree!! I've been trying really hard to not get my expectations too high for a lot of series lately because booktube has a habit of HYPING things up. Chase did a review of the first law trilogy and that helped me take it off the pedestal. I love single book reviews that help you form a better opinion.
Mmmm delicious writing! I can't wait to read this! After all the other Schwab I will be reading this month 😂. What a great review! Books are so subjective but beautiful! Love you!
Aw no I'm sorry you were disappointed! I know that there is a lack of plot but I loved the character study. This definitely isn't the book for everyone. I thought it was pretty jarring with the introduction of Henry's point of view but honestly I liked his perspective the most!
Yes, it's 100% a character study above all else and I really liked what Schwab did with that, but I think that just made me figure out I don't like character driven books HAHA But, I'm still probably always going to give her books a try since her writing is just *chefs kiss* Just got Vicious actually and I think it might be more up my alley
I appreciate that you've given a somewhat negative review, actually. I'm so excited to read it, partly because of the hype. So hearing someone go into the negatives is refreshing! Describing the prose as a 'french pastry' is a great way to think about it. I love the idea of beautiful writing, but without substance, what's the point?
Thank you!!!! It is always a LITTLE nerve-wracking to have a negative review of a very hyped book. And I agree! The writing is SO gorgeous, but at the 40% mark I was like, okay but like....is there anything else to this?
OMG, I'm so glad I watched this. I've been intrigued by this book, but I could easily see some potential pitfalls - and at least some of them were brought up by you as a problems. Didn't know about the weird dual perspective/dual timeline, though. It was never high on my list to read, but don't worry, it will stay on the list for now. 😉
@@happylittlebooks1345 LMAOOO THANK YOU I didn't take a thumbnail so I had to grab a screencapture nad I was like "wow I look like a MESS" HAHAHAH I'm glad you liked the review!!
@@ShipwreckedLibrary For all my reading vlogs and random other videos, I just use the generated ones from youtube. Every once in a while I seriously consider refilming because the options available showcase me in the worst possible way, hahaha
I still read and unironically enjoy Twilight, I am never allowed to EVER HAHAH But I am gonna continue to read Schwab's writing just to see if I can find a book I DO like. I'm trying Vicious next.
I love your review. I was actually pausing midway to tell my husband that you are saying exactly what I was, when i was reading it. I waited to watch this video until i was done with the book myself, to make sure i would not be biased. The "contemporary feel" is what bothered me the most I think. I was expecting more magic. Another point I am conflicted with, is the ending. I dont want to spoiler, even though I would love to discuss it :D let's say I found it to be somewhat selfish... any thought on that? :) Anyways, love your videos!!!! 💛
Thank you for watching!! I'm so glad you enjoyed! I definitely expected it to have more magical realism or fantasy. It was very "light" in those aspects, and I felt really let down by that. I'm intrigued by your take on the ending!! I don't know if I'd call Addie's decision selfish, but it was very...hmm...unexpected? What makes you call it selfish? That's a unique perspective !
@@ShipwreckedLibrary ----possible spoilers------ my first reaction was thinking that I would be really mad if I were Henry. His mental struggles are already kind of heavy and then when he finally comes to terms with his fate, ready to let go, she sort of takes his place. Meaning that he has to live on because she also gives him a task. So now he is pressured and forced to live with this crazy grief and with people that probably dont love him as much anymore now that the deal is off (which i imagine can feel super lonely once you are used to the warm attention from everyone and then it's suddenly gone) Like if I just think about my husband or anyone I love taking my place like that I would be devastated for the rest of my life. I hope it kind of makes sense.. I'm not very good at delivering my points :D
1) Schwab's writing was excellent, but I agree, it was the main essence of art carrying this book. 2) I wanted to snap Luc's neck by his third visit to Addie. His f*boy taunting was way annoying and more of a presence than it needed to be and robbed the reader of looking further into Addie's adventures. You know the ones where she hints at throughout but we're never given more than something that could fit on fortune cookie scrolls. 3) In over three centuries Addie never 'grows' intellectually or emotionally. She's still, essentially, the same woman-child as she was when she made her deal. 4) Do we need so many unrelated chapters featuring Addie's sexual adventures, only for those adventures to end with said lovers either being cucked by Luc, or simply forgetting her, as if we've forgotten her curse? 5) Even if everyone doesn't want Henry and Addie together, the book could've ended on an open note between them that permits the reader to guess if there was a future for them...assuming that the middle section to end was different from the nonsense that Schwab wrote. 6) Henry's back story could've been whittled down and still had some substance to it to keep him relevant in the novel. In fact, his connection with Luc could've better served as a big surprise near the end. 7) I now realize that in writing this reply, I've spent too much time tearing apart a novel that was hijacked by my own expectations and hope as a reader, and I've no other way to vent about it.
