If I might interject, I think his laughing might have had more to do with his accepting he was a fictional character. Cane wrote him and some of the others like Styles into existence. That was just my take, could be wrong.

Saw it at theater as a teenager, only started to get it after several watches throughout my 20s I get something new each time, which is it's own kind of creepy.
One my favorite "Lovecraftian" films.
Carpenters whole Apocalypse Trilogy (this film being the last entry) has a lot of Lovecraft themes.
I love when he mixes in classic films with the new stuff - his take always gives me a smile the next time I watch it
'The Thing' is inspired by Dante's Inferno: Circle 7 {Cantos XXIV and XXV} to Circle 9 - Traitors in the Ice. All in this order. This includes the passage via the Giants in the Well. The Thing is a composite of Cacus and the Serpents.

Something you didn’t mention about the end of the film and what makes it even more clever is that the film being watched at the end of the movie is the same one we’ve been experiencing. In essence, at the end of the movie, the implication is that we too are damned and doomed to the same madness for sharing the experience.

I like Sam Neil, he likes playing in weird stuff for a long time, he is not just in stage theater or "realistic drama", he has done a lot of creepy horror shows. He was the adult Damien in the Omen series i just remembered. Lol

Lovecraft fandoms talk about it a lot too. For some reason the consensus is Event Horizon is better, but that is madness in my opinion. No pun intended. Hellraiser 2 was better, also just an opinion.
I saw it when it came out and have loved it since. Literally gets better with each viewing. So glad more people are giving it the attention it deserves.
27:11 My other interpretation of this moment was that John Trent was finally accepting the fact that _he_ was a fictional character who had just been created by Kane in order to be the protagonist for this story. In a kind of "Möbius strip" effect, he understands that the movie he's watching only exists because it is a media representation of the universe that _he_ inhabits while he's in the cinema.
So he's not just laughing at the absurdity of it all... but he's also horrified because he knows that his existence will end as soon as the movie does. After all, the only reason he exists is to tell the story, so once that's over, so is he.

if it's so, then it feels to me like a cheap attempt at nihilism. You know, a sort of "What if we're all just characters in a story?" question meant to force in the reader/viewer the realisation of the lack of implicit meaning in life.

@@shadowlord1418 no, it was already overused then because this is a "twist" that's been around in literature for over a hundred years. Lovecraft, to make an example, is full of these "In truth you and everything you've ever done never mattered" moments.

Pickman was an artists that went missing. His friend start looking for him and in the end learns that the monsters in his paintings are real. Change artist with writer, friend with investigator and paintings with books and you have this movie. Really enjoyed the movie. It's Pickman's model plot line with King in Yellow McGuffin (i.e. a book that makes everyone go mad).
Pickman's Model mixed with Shadow over Innsmouth mixed with Call of Cthulhu.

The old lady at the hotel “Mrs. Pickman” is definitely a reference to H.P. Lovecraft’s story “Pickman’s model”

@callmecatalyst Yeah I tried to think of how Mrs Pickman might be analogous to the Pickman in Lovecraft’s story and came up with nothing. If I’m remembering correctly Pickman was an artist who made uncanny yet inspired paintings of grotesque, horrifying creatures and it turns out he was using actual “demons” as his models, that had crawled out of an ancient well deep in a long forgotten cavern/basement.
The final metamorphosis of Mrs. and Mr. Pickman into grotesque demonic creatures like what may have crawled from the ancient well is the only possible link I could come up with off the top of my head and that’s stretching it……….not my head but the possible link from book to movie. 🙂👍
The movie defiantly hit all the bigger names if you know your lovercraft, just in this ending explained i caught 'pickmans model', 'shadow out of time', 'dagon', 'call of cuthulhu', even sprinklings of 'the dunwhich horror'
@callmecatalyst What do you mean? King just payed tribute to the story he used as plot reference. 1. Artist goes missing. 2. Someone starts looking for him. 3. stuff gets weird and the monsters are real.
Can't believe you read the short story and didn't notice the direct correlation. Maybe read it again, it's just a few pages long.

Not saying that it's flawless but i think he did a decent job. a nice touch to add the creepy painting in the room with mrs pickman as well. but that's just my opinion.

I have a personal history with this movie. When I was in high school, we watched the movie and loved it. Turns out the filming locations were all close to us (Toronto, Canada). So, we smoked a few blunts and drove out to the church. This was at night, outside the city basically a farming area. We hopped the fence, had bats just in case. It was the Slovak Church of the Transfiguration. I kid you not. The murals were even the same as the movie. So proud to be Czechoslovakian at that moment. Anyways, after hearing barking and thinking huge dogs were coming for us, and seeing strange red lights coming from the basement of the church, we were just a bit freaked out. Oh, I neglected to mention that we also ingested some shrooms. So a few minutes of exploring and then we heard sirens and saw flashing cop car lights. They were actually very cool cops. Instead of assuming we were just there to smash windows and loot, etc., they gave us a chance to explain. Canadian cops can be really cool sometimes. So we had to try and explain the plot, and try to name the actors. They ended up letting us go with no issues, they even said it sounded like a great flick. I understand it sounds underwhelming, but anyone who has had a difficult trip with weed and shrooms, would understand. This was an unforgettable experience, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Respect to the Durham Police for being real people, they really adjusted my opinion of local law enforcement. If you guys are reading this, I just want to say “thank you.”

I loved this film back then and I love it today. Sam Neil is one of my favorite actors of all time. Event Horizon is another awesome film with Sam in it too.
@Brique Zallivam He, like many others, enjoyed Event Horizon. It's a bit extreme to judge someone's taste on one movie. Do you only like critically acclaimed films?
I was in college when this movie came out and one of the effects guys did a talk on campus. I'll always remember him talking about the big mass of creatures that chase Sam Neil through the hallway and that his team nicknamed it "the parade float". Even seeing it in static images, it was pretty trippy.

This is my favorite horror movie of all time and one of the few legitimate Lovrcraftian-legacy films to stay true to its namesake.

I've been waiting for this video ever since I started watching Ending Explained. I'm so excited! This is my favorite horror movie of all time.
Finally someone recognizes In The Mouth of Madness as "brilliant". I also always loved it and only increasingly so every time I watch it. I think what throws people off is the production quality is hardcore '90s style, damn near high-level TV movie quality. Madness' audio mastering and, like, video coloring or editing or something just feels a tad... cheap, in a weird way. It's like a notch above The Stand TV series (the overall quality of which- should be noted- is great). But then you pay attention and the pacing is damn near fucking perfect. The action creeps up like an eel, you get jump scares that don't feel too cheap, you get mind-fucked, there's foreboding tension that actually pays off, there's creature horror, and they don't cheap out at all on the Lovecraft mythos part. It ends as Lovecraftian as anything ever should, and IMO adds to the official Lovecraft extended mythos perfectly. When people ask my favorite horror movie, my answer is probably gonna be In The Mouth of Madness. Sam Neil, absolute God-King of '90s movies. Just an automatic quality multiplier, no matter the quality of the production itself.

I've actually had quite a few "dream within a dream" experiences myself. Mostly involving waking up to go to the bathroom, realizing I'm not actually awake, and then having it happen a few more times before I actually wake up. It's really quite annoying when it happens.
could be worse. Mine are mostly nightmares where i die increasingly scary deaths and revive at a fixed point in time only to die again. Only stops when i wake up, at which point i stay paralysed for a good 2-3 mins waiting for the next death

The dreaded double dream? I had one the other week where I woke up 5 times, all inside the dream. Made me question my reality for half a minute when I really did wake up so I can empathise with Trent here
I never had it before. But when i was a kid i dreamed i had a very mundane school day. Just as i was leaving to go home i woke up and it was monday morning.

Same. Dreams within dreams are so weird. I remember woke up several times and looked at the door and each time it was a different door from my rooms in previous houses we lived in. When I finally did wake up I like had to confirm I was actually awake and I’m actually in the present
I thought I was the only one who had those inception dreams. Sometimes it gets to a point where I realize I’m dreaming and think I’ve somehow fallen into a coma or that I’ve died and that this weird semi-conscious “reality” is for eternity. It’s terrifying.
I’m not particularly religious but that’s how I would describe hell. & Don’t get me started on sleep paralysis OBEs.
It is my very unprofessional and uneducated opinion that dreams within dreams are a sign that you're experiencing some kind of personal trauma and possibly not dealing with it.
I think ITMOM is one of the most underrated movies out there. It's also the best HP Lovecraft movie ever made
"People turning into monsters!" LOL! Enjoyed your review. Kurt Russell was very good in The Thing, and he's in BTiLC too, popular choice for John Carpenter ! Remember watching The Fog - really claustrophobic atmosphere, with a bunch of people going manic! Sam Neill is great casting choice here.

This film and soundtrack absolutely slap. There is just one thing I am curious about. I have always felt like there was a good bit left on the cutting room floor or scenes written that Carpenter just couldn't shoot due to budget or time constraints.
Not because the film doesn't feel complete, it definitely does. ITMOM just leaves an impression or nagging feeling that there was just a little more that we didn't get to see and experience. Then again I'd enthusiastically watch a 6 hour cut of any Carpenter movie so maybe it's just me wanting more.
I feel like I watched this years ago and my brain filed it away as a nightmare instead of a movie. Definitely need to watch again.

This movie and The Thing, Big Trouble, and Escape from New York are some of my favorite movies of all time...
Probably my favorite JC flick, which is saying a lot. Dude has made some real bangers! As a Lovecraft nerd who's been disappointed by 99% of all attempts to capture a true Lovecraftian feel on film, I can't help but stand in awe that Carpenter not only succeeded where so many have failed, he did so with an original story rather than adapting one from ol' Howard.
I love this movie! It’s what got me interested in the H.P Lovecraft/Cthulhu genre! This is a priceless gem of a movie that has never gotten the attention it deserves!!

I think that placing it in Massachussetts would have been a little too on-the-nose for their Cain / King reference.
In HPL's "Pickman's Model", Richard Upton Pickman is an infamous artist who goes missing. His paintings are hyper-realistic depictions of otherworldly creepy and grotesque creatures that he claimed he painted entirely from life. It's pretty apt that the Pickman hotel has a cursed looking painting in the lobby.
I feel old when I think about when this classic first came out. It has such a great story.

I was not expecting this classic to be on your channel. I'm a huge Lovecraft fan and this is in my top 3 movies of all time. Love the channel.
Ghosts of Mars is possibly my favorite thing created out of pure spite.
What's really unique about this is that unbeknownst to Trent; him holding onto reason was the one thing that made him be portrayed as insane in a world of 'beleivers'. These believers, however paying the ultimate price for their tribal indulgence in reading and consuming Cane's content which was really just a conduit of evil from the unknown horrors. All the believers inadvertently allowed themselves to become puppets of this reality warping fiction and devolved into monstrosities in the likeness of these unknown horrors.
This was one of the few movies that actually showed me the road to Lovecraftian Horror and i have stuck to that path since. I true classic from the Master.
I’m so happy you did this movie. It’s one of my all time favorites and it’s extremely underrated. The number of fans in the world probably increased tenfold when you consider the size of your audience and the fact that most of us could actually understand the movie because of this vid

@Brique Zallivam would it though? I mean much of lovecrafts work is way less cryptic than people remember. Mountain of Madness especially had a huge segment of discribing the appearance and history of its "antagonist". I think with decent production design it could be a great watch, i hope for puppets/props though. CGI horror monsters were always a visual letdown for me

Carpenter is so amazing, Big Trouble is one of my favorite films (and escape from NY) but he really is a master of horror. He’s done so many different stories each with his own brand and i can’t get enough. Even his “bad” films like the ward has redeeming qualities. i’ll admit, i’m biased as hell, but i really do think he’s a genius.

This movie just proves how genius and ahead of his time Lovecraft really was. He literally invented "cosmic horror", and this movie is one of the best examples of it.

One of my favorites. It's basically John Carpenter's love letter to H.P. Lovecraft. What more could a horror fan ask for?
Sam Neill is the scream king of horror movies - with the Dr. Weir scream from Event Horizon being the most brilliant - and most hilarious.

My dad put this movie on when I was either 9 or 10 years old and quite frankly, I had no idea what the hell was going on but I knew that I thoroughly enjoyed it. It kind of kickstarted my enjoyment of John Carpenter’s media ventures. I’d also like to add, I love ghosts of Mars.
I remember watching this flick some 20+ years ago as a child. I was depressed from the confusion.

One of my favorite movies. Admittedly, I am a 1976-1994 Carpenter fanboy. Sad thing on this one is that there has never been a vinyl release. I have basically every Carpenter movie score on vinyl but this one I have to stream. Thanks for the video!!
