The year prior to this film Rob Bottin's makeup FX for "The Howling" alongside Rick Baker's work on "An American Werewolf In London" was groundbreaking in the Transformation scene.
Thank you for this retrospective, this is one of my all time favourite movies. I love how in depth you go with the info you gather. I think you should have way more subs than you do. I saw your post about needing to take a break from TH-cam, but I hope you decide to continue. Great work.
I remember the seeing the kennel scene as a child and being put off this film. 20 years went by and I rewatched the film on a screen in London. Now it's one of my favourite films.
I'm pleased (and possibly a bit smug?) to have been one of many teenagers who saw the film in its original theatrical release and knew it was a classic; I guess it took the rest of the world a few years to catch up.
He did a retrospective of this back in 2013. This is the remake of that retrospective that is more detailed and has a lot more insight than the original retrospective from a number of years back.
Great reviews, one of best movies ever made. I disagree with arguing about the plot holes. Its a science fiction which should fascinate, bring you to another world and keep you always asking and wondering.
Oliver, you've very quickly become my daily staple of TH-cam. That which I spend most of my time. I'm a huge movie fan and LOVE your retrospectives in particular. Keep up the good work my friend. You should have many more followers to come. Just keep doing what you do
I just watched this movie for the first time and I swear I have never seen a movie like this before in my life. The movie just builds and builds and builds never letting you catch a breath. The suspense of which one is The Thing is phenomenal. I feel like it will quickly become my favorite horror movie in the near future on further rewatches and it’s definitely in my opinion John Carpenter’s best work to date.
I've been watching this film on and off for decade's. I remember watching it over 20 year's ago and thinking the same as you. It's well known to be a masterpiece.
I'm so glad my parents didn't care at all what I watched when I was growing up. I was just a little kid when this came out and they knew I liked horror films and thought I would love it. They were right and, as scary as it was, I knew I was safe while they were with me. Thanks for another great video!
It's pretty overwhelmingly intense, bleak, angry and depressing as well as looking grotesque, it's only when you have time to think about it later that you see how clever it is
@@imcallingjapan2178I’m surprised people find it so bleak. Yes the situation is beyond fucked up and things end up how they do, but there’s an animating spirit of saving humanity through the whole thing. Cognitively you know these aliens are still out there, but that was never an emotional note for me. And you never know for sure what buying humanity time might add up to in the future.
The novella “Who goes there?” Was originally written as a novel Titled “Frozen Hell”. But it was trimmed down it order for it to be published in a magazine of the time. The missing part of the novel was found a few years ago. The complete version was then published and as since been optioned to be turned into a film.
"Maybe one day they'll put out the original cut and removing the lousy CGI" 👈That, definitely. Hopefully one day sooner rather than later. I second what you say about the performances, music and the atmosphere. The Thing 2011 was good, but with STUDIO ADI's cool effects, it may have been almost as good as the John Carpenter film. Speaking of that, I absolutely love how The Thing 1982 is still discussed, especially the ending. This is another video to compliment that magical, timeless film. It will always be one of my favourite horror and Sci Fi films 🙂😊 Also, because of the snow, I link it to Christmas in a dark and weird way LOL! 😅 It'd be great if they remade the game, or created a new one with similar suspenseful and thoughtful trust based elements. Nice one fella 👍
If only the directors cut of Event Horizon was still available, had it not disintegrated in the Transylvania salt mine The idea that it had scenes that were overwhelmingly grotesque and horrifying in the extreme just boggles the mind...
Another great review. I love when you go back and update/expand your older reviews (like with The Shadow)....it really shows the evolution in your style and craft. Thanks for all your great work
I am SO glad you decided to remake this retrospect! Now I just wish you'd remake others like Return to Oz, Hook, The Dark Crystal, and Flight of the Navigator. But first, I'd still like to see King Kong '76. LOL
Another great review and breakdown. One of my favourite films and I think a masterpiece in a genre that so often disappoints. Heavy spoilers also did a great in depth review earlier this year, and examined who got infected first etc and how their behaviour changes, little details to notice etc. Great stuff.
This and Aliens are probably my 2 favorite movies ever. I watched this one w/ my dad recently. It never gets old. I also liked the prequel although studio interference w/ the special effects and changing the ending really hurt the movie.
The best part about this movie is that the plot moves forward because the characters are smart and rational. Sure, some hindsight shows that they messed up, but they didnt know that at the time - making it relatable. Thats why i loooove scary movies like this. The blond chick walking out alone naked in the dark shouting "Billy...?!" just makes me sad that those movies get made and gold like this got put away for them....
Great video! So fun to get some more info on the background. The Thing, They Live and Big Trouble are some of my favorite movies ever.. Kurt Russell is great too. What a pair
Ah, I forgot... I wanted to re-watch this classic masterpiece! Well, thank you, Oliver, for a nice reminder 👍 This actually could be considered a Christmas horror movie! Just because it just set in a cold and snowy environment, but yeah, yeah, I know it's not really a Christmas movie, I always used to watch it around Christmas time more so than on Halloween season tho for some reason.
Another AWESOME REVIEW!! This movie has been one of my favorite horror movies ever made! Your review as always, puts the proper light on it. Thank you!!
Fantastic Movie, one of the very few I consider perfect in any way. And the Prequel, while clearly not on the same level, is enjoyable. I, too, hope for an Directors' Cut. Matthijs van Heijningen and Studio ADI had the right idea, but were screwed over by the Studio. On that note, I'd like to mention "Harbinger Down", the low-budget Horror-Flick Alec Gillis made a few years later as a reaction to the enthusiastic response making-of-Videos of the unused practical Effects made for the Prequel recieved from Fans. "Harbinger Down" is basically a Thing-Fanfilm, featuring a very similarily designed Monster realized entirely without CGI. It isnt a Masterpiece, but I kinda admire and apprechiate it all the same.
I really enjoyed this review. Excellent, honest and well balanced critique. Thank you. I first saw this version on VHS when I was 13 or 14 years old and I still love it. Once I was over the initial shock and awe of the effects, every rewatch took me deeper into the story and the characters. In the 40 years since first watching it I still enjoy trying to work out how infections take place, who got infected and when. It's brilliant. Thanks again 👍
Thank you for briefly covering the PS2 video game. I remember getting it for Christmas in my early teens, and loving finding the easter eggs like the Blair UFO amd Mac's tape recording.

Thank you for this retrospective, this is one of my all time favourite movies. I love how in depth you go with the info you gather. I think you should have way more subs than you do.
I saw your post about needing to take a break from TH-cam, but I hope you decide to continue. Great work.
Greatest sci fi horror film of the 20th century. Masterpiece.
Ever seen ALIEN?
@@bobhope5114 of course, and this is superior.
I love this movie so much 10/10 Golden stars.
I remember the seeing the kennel scene as a child and being put off this film. 20 years went by and I rewatched the film on a screen in London. Now it's one of my favourite films.
Seeing the dog tearing away at the wire mesh, struggling to escape just broke my heart as a kid
I love introducing people to this film. It never disappoints.
My new favorite youtube channel
Epic top shelf review as always.
I just wanna say I love that you started your video by showing the film. So amazing than just immediately reading a script
I'm pleased (and possibly a bit smug?) to have been one of many teenagers who saw the film in its original theatrical release and knew it was a classic; I guess it took the rest of the world a few years to catch up.
YES! Been waiting for this since you announced it! Glad I got notifications turned on.
Love this film! I’m surprised you haven’t done a retrospective on this already. Good job!
He did a retrospective of this back in 2013. This is the remake of that retrospective that is more detailed and has a lot more insight than the original retrospective from a number of years back.
@@benjischannel3008ok I thought I had seen this lol. Thank you for clarifying
The first 3 mins of this video is absolutely amazing! Better than pretty much any trailer I've seen for this movie!
Well done! Excellent work!
Interestingly, I didn’t like it when I first saw it, but rewatched it later and surprisingly enjoyed it
You are one of many like that. I was the same way.
It will always be one of my favourite horror and Sci Fi films 🙂😊
Also, because of the snow, I link it to Christmas in a dark and weird way LOL! 😅
It'd be great if they remade the game, or created a new one with similar suspenseful and thoughtful trust based elements. Nice one fella 👍
Great game
If only the directors cut of Event Horizon was still available, had it not disintegrated in the Transylvania salt mine
The idea that it had scenes that were overwhelmingly grotesque and horrifying in the extreme just boggles the mind...
@@SamuelBlack84 Sounds cool AF
Great film and great review mate. Well done and thank you
Another great review. I love when you go back and update/expand your older reviews (like with The Shadow)....it really shows the evolution in your style and craft. Thanks for all your great work
R.J Macready helicopter pilot U.S outpost... Absolute legend film.
I am SO glad you decided to remake this retrospect! Now I just wish you'd remake others like Return to Oz, Hook, The Dark Crystal, and Flight of the Navigator. But first, I'd still like to see King Kong '76. LOL
Loved this movie and saw it in theaters when it was released. Also love the first The Thing movie before this one that I saw on television as a kid.
Another top notch review Oliver. Thanks again.
What a pair
Now
Godzilla vs the Thing 🎉❤
Ah, I forgot... I wanted to re-watch this classic masterpiece! Well, thank you, Oliver, for a nice reminder 👍 This actually could be considered a Christmas horror movie! Just because it just set in a cold and snowy environment, but yeah, yeah, I know it's not really a Christmas movie, I always used to watch it around Christmas time more so than on Halloween season tho for some reason.
Maybe it'll be the next Die Hard - like Christmas movie!
MAC WANTS THE FLAMETHROWER
Been waiting for this one. Love the research you do on the history of these films and your love for them shows through.
There are very few "perfect" films, but this is one of them
Another AWESOME REVIEW!!
Thanks again 👍
before its time
Love your work Oliver, huge inspiration, everytime I watch one of your retrospectives, it pours more gasoline on my burning passion for film 🙌🫶
I rewatch this movie every winter
Thank you for briefly covering the PS2 video game. I remember getting it for Christmas in my early teens, and loving finding the easter eggs like the Blair UFO amd Mac's tape recording.
One of my favourite films. Absolutely terrifying. Great special effects, psychological tension.
Mr. Harper. You are great at what you do. Thanks
Oliver, your work is absolutely amazing and Hollywood should hire you to do their trailers and documentaries.
I love the 2011 prequel as well.
A new Harper review? "You gotta be f@$king kidding me" Long time coming. Worth the wait, Cheers
This is like pinnacle Sci-Fi horror, a gold standard almost.
Love your content, especially the trailers you make as an intro to each review. Would love to see playlist dedicated just to them.
