  • My walk today is along Dekalb Ave in Bushwick, Brooklyn, NYC. I provide a narrated update in regards to the New York Stories which will resume next week, and then I finish up with some music to round out the walk up a pleasant street in Brooklyn.
    Since 2000, the rise of real estate prices in nearby Manhattan has made the neighborhood more attractive to younger professionals. In the wake of reduced crime rates citywide and a shortage of affordable housing in nearby neighborhoods such as Park Slope and Williamsburg, numerous young professionals and artists have moved into converted warehouse lofts, brownstones, limestone-brick townhouses, and other renovated buildings in Bushwick.
    A flourishing artist community has existed in Bushwick for decades and has become more visible in the neighborhood. Dozens of art studios and galleries are scattered throughout the neighborhood. Several open studios programs are conducted that enable the public to visit artist studios and galleries, and several websites are devoted to promoting neighborhood art and events. Bushwick artists display their works in galleries and private spaces throughout the neighborhood. The borough's first and only trailer park, a 20-person art collective established by founder, Hayden Cummings and ZenoRadio's Baruch Herzfeld, was established within a former nut roasting factory for live/work spaces. A Bushwick-centered news site, entitled Bushwick Daily, was founded in 2010 by Katarina Hybenova, and features community issues, events, food, art and culture.
    Starting in the mid-2000s, the city and state governments began the Bushwick Initiative, a two-year pilot program spearheaded by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and various community projects. The group's goal was to improve quality of life in the twenty-three square blocks surrounding Maria Hernandez Park through various programs such as addressing deteriorated housing conditions, increasing economic development opportunities, and reducing drug dealing activities. The group's crime-reduction activities included collaboration with the HPD's Narcotics Control Unit and the New York City Police Department's 83rd Precinct and Narcotics Division to reduce drug-dealing. In addition, to reduce lead hazards in buildings, HPD and DOHMH created a grant program focusing on residential buildings in the initiative's coverage area, which resulted in fines for dozens of landlords with lead paint hazards. The Bushwick Initiative's economic development efforts were also focused on revitalizing the Knickerbocker Avenue commercial district, and adding a thousand rat-resistant public trash cans to reduce litter.
    In 2019, the New York City Department of City Planning released a Bushwick rezoning plan covering 300 city blocks. The plan would allow for high-density development on Broadway and Myrtle and Wyckoff Avenues.
    The entirety of Community Board 4 had 112,388 inhabitants as of NYC Health's 2018 Community Health Profile, with an average life expectancy of 80.4 years. This is lower than the median life expectancy of 81.2 for all New York City neighborhoods. Most inhabitants are middle-aged adults and youth: 24% are between the ages of 0-17, 35% between 25 and 44, and 20% between 45 and 64. The ratio of college-aged and elderly residents was lower, at 12% and 9% respectively.
    As of 2016, the median household income in Community Board 4 was $50,656. In 2018, an estimated 25% of Bushwick residents lived in poverty, compared to 21% in all of Brooklyn and 20% in all of New York City. One in eight residents (13%) were unemployed, compared to 9% in the rest of both Brooklyn and New York City. Rent burden, or the percentage of residents who have difficulty paying their rent, is 55% in Bushwick, higher than the citywide and boroughwide rates of 52% and 51% respectively.
    Though an ethnic neighborhood, Bushwick's population is, for a New York City neighborhood, relatively heterogeneous, scoring a 0.5 on the Furman Center's racial diversity index, making it the city's 35th most diverse neighborhood in 2007. Most residents are Latino American citizens from the island of Puerto Rico and immigrants from the Dominican Republic. Since the turn of the 21st century, the population of native-born Americans has increased, as have other Latino groups, particularly immigrants from Mexico and El Salvador. In 2008 the neighborhood's median household income was $28,802. 32% of the population falls under the poverty line, making Bushwick the 7th-most impoverished neighborhood in New York City. More than 75% of children in the neighborhood are born in poverty. Some 40.3% of students in Bushwick read at grade level in 2007, making it the 49th most literate neighborhood in the city that year. 58.2% of students could work math at grade level in Bushwick, and it ranked as 41st in the city.

      Not for nothing my friend, but I think that you and your kids could also do an awesome livestream. Can you imagine the amount of questions that your little human encyclopedia would be asked? I'm not sure if it would be feasible for you, or even if it is something that you would consider allowing your children to participate in, but if you moderated the questions I could imagine it being a wonderful educational tool. "Richard in New York wants to know, how long does it take before a tadpole becomes a frog? Now who would like to answer that one for us" :)

    I was born and raised in the Ridgewood/Bushwick area. Lived on Wyckoff between Stanhope and Stockholm for many years. Seeing Sal's Pizzeria still there on the corner of DeKalb and Wyckoff brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

    You have hit on so many points in regard to YT, watch time, comments, and subscriptions...all of which I am in total agreement...and of course, I am totally "old school" too, and nothing wrong with that in my book at all! ;-) The temperatures lately have been terrible...we have had temps in the 90s and with 100% humidity. Sure do hope that travel opens up soon...not sure about this 4th wave. You got some more of that great street art in this one too...continue to look forward to more explorations and stories. Whether or not I will be able to go is a decision that I can't make myself though, I can only go if each country feels that it is safe to do so. I might end up having to put the trip back by a year. The toy car amused me so much that I had to film it. It looks like it was once a police car.

    Hello, my dear Richard! Here I am finally! I can watch and enjoy your last two videos with calm and attention.
    This area of Brooklyn really seems to be perfect as a residential area, in fact. I understand that it is in great demand, even for the lower prices, I guess!
    It also appears to be very quiet and livable.
    I saw the disaster that happened in NYC .... I am always so sorry and impressed! Hope everything is fine now. Unfortunately, many people have also lost their lives ....
    Time has definitely changed and we have to undergo tropical effects now!
    I absolutely agree with you on the display and length of the videos! I'm also now trying to reduce them a bit, although I realize it's not easy with the kind of video I make.
    But I try to do my best not to get bored ....
    My dearest friend, I look forward to your live show and I hope it is at a time when I can follow it just as you are shooting it!
    Have a great weekend! Renata

      I think that this is the last of the walking videos from the area, well I think that I have one more but I will try and turn that into a story. This area was hit pretty hard with the flooding, but ironically, I don't live too far away from here, we actually didn't get flooded. I mean some streets got hit badly, but my street the drainage worked well. I did step outside during the rain though and my goodness was it coming down, lol.

    Another great walk Richard, but it's especially good to hear you talking to us again. "If you don't try something new, you'll never know if you like it or not." Truer words were never spoken! We are also coming to the same "less is more" conclusion, although there is no guarantee that people will watch 4 minutes of your 7 minute video either as opposed to 4 minutes of the 14 minute one. Sometimes it seems that a lot of people are only going to watch a small percentage no matter how short the video is. Shrinking attention spans in general are a real plague not just on youtube but society overall. We'll try to tune in for the livestream if possible. Where in Eastern Europe are you thinking of visiting? Hope your plans pan out.

    • @richardarthur-nycstories
      @richardarthur-nycstories  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely correct, a 7 minute video doesn't guarantee 4 minutes of watch time. With my stories however, I do get some good retention rates. Of course it is unfortunate that for every person who watches the entire video, there will be two watching for 10 seconds just so that they can leave their channel name in your comment section. Next week I might actually try two short stories under 5 minutes each instead of telling a 10 minute story. I'm always will to mix things up. The video in question only has two stories in it, but the first story will be about 5-7 minutes long. Because it is first I fear that nobody will watch (or very few people will watch) the end of the video. So with that in mind I am thinking of making a separate 3 minute quickie video as well. In regards to Europe, my trip has been long planned but Covid prevented it from happening. I will be staying in Bratislava primarily, then from there I will visit Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic on day trips. I will also visit Germany during the same trip. While Bratislava will be the main base, of course I will stay in other countries depending on the need. You know like a week in Bratislava, 3 days in Austria and then 3 days in Germany.

    Agree with you. So less is more. I have come to the same conclusion. Great that the stories return. By the way, lovely little neighbourhood walk this one too 😊👍

    • @richardarthur-nycstories
      @richardarthur-nycstories  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I looked through my footage last night even I said "This one isn't too bad" lol. It all depends on what type of content that you are putting out in regards to retention rate. My stories always do well with keeping people watching the video, the problem I have is that the videos never get pushed by TH-cam. The stories that I am planning, some of them may actually end up being really small. It is also something that I want to try, videos that tell a story but are only a couple of minutes long. In fact I might try a couple next week and see how they go.

And there are fatalities. It seems the gods are.angry what with the fires and drought on the West Coast and the storms in the South round Louisiana and now N.Y. and N.E. Anyway hope all is ok with you.
    So many people in that video look wrapped up - not summery at all. Didn’t like those 2 men early on - up to no good. Look forward to a ‘live’ broadcast.

      It was quite the storm I have to say, though it seems that most of the damage in Queens was north of where I am. The area where I filmed the Elmhurst churches in particular is where a lot of the flooded subway footage came from. I'm not sure exactly when I filmed this, it was probably in June I think, but I always look to go out on the coldest days anyway. I might take a couple of minutes from this video and tell a story over the weekend, just a quick one.
