Cool.. Looks peaceful😎
I couldn't be bothered to spend hours editing a video this week so I just uploaded a short instead :)
Who doesn't love iconic comedic actor Bert Lahr? As a teenager, I went to a local drive in with my family & watched the last filmed he appeared in: "The Night They Raided Minskys" (1968). Sadly, Bert had cancer & passed away before production ended. A double had to be used for some of his scenes. It also starred the very popular British comic Norman Wisdom, who most Americans never became familair with. Thank you for sharing, Richard!
You know what, I knew that The night they raided Minskys was his last film, but I didn't know Norman Wisdom was in it. I used to love the lovable clown Norman Wisdom when I was younger.
@@richardarthur-nycstories I first became aware of Norman when I was a kid & a local TV station would sometimes show his films during their morning matinee. It was the 60s, so there was no cable, satellite or home video. Most TV stations showed movies, either during the daytime or during the late night hours.
I guess she must have lived in the area..
Yeah I'm going to guess that she lived on that very street.
Do any of them work I assume they are all broken. Thanks for sharing the nostalgia.
So this is how you know. On a streetlamp at the intersection there will be a red light that lights up at night if it works. If it doesn't work then there is no light at that intersection. 1 in every 40 calls to emergency call centers come from these boxes, so they are indeed still in use.
Thanks for the information I never knew that.Richard you are a man of great knowledge.Thank You
Completely fascinating !! Thanks to you, we see the coolest places, Awesome Mr. A !!
Whenever I run out of stories in Queens and Brooklyn, there is twice as many to tell in Manhattan :)
@@richardarthur-nycstories A veritable treasure chest of tantalizing tales !!
I think you're right, Friend Richard. They're all bound to be removed at some point.
The main reason that they exist, believe it or not, is for people who are deaf. My guess is that in the future they will be replaced by some form of digital device, perhaps activated by a key that is given to the deaf community. Something like that anyway.
@@richardarthur-nycstories As I do when I take off my hat, you make a good point, Fab Friend!
Cool car & cool song ! THANKS, Richard !
Cliff Richard, Britain's first rock and roll star.
@@richardarthur-nycstories Fascinated by the life & career of Cliff Richard. Had a few songs on the American charts but sadly never became as big over here as he is the UK.
that's a pretty funny thing.. It reminds me of being a kid and making walkie talkies with two paper cups and a long piece of string!!
Or putting a glass cup against the wall to listen to the neighbors argue :)
Great work, love to watch.
Thank you very much!
You would think they would have already been obsolete in the 21 century.. They seem so mid 20th century.. I have no problem with them though, I like things from yesteryear
People may think that I am talking nonsense, but the biggest reason they still exist is for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. I honestly don't know how it works, but they have a system where a deaf person can use these boxes. I'm guessing that they can put their hand on the speaker, feel the vibration, and they can then respond either verbally, or I believe they have a code they can tap onto the call box. It's quite fascinating. The hard of hearing was the specific reason the ADA cited when Giuliani tried to remove all the boxes. Before I sent my reply I went looking, here's a video that explains it all :) th-cam.com/video/qQD0uDz5gVM/w-d-xo.html
You're right, and it's disgusting. We're watching our world disappear in front of our virus.People don't even talk to one another. Now they sit and watch their phones ,24/7
One day we will all be replaced by AI :)
They recently removed all the pay phones in my town. I live in the usa. Dying technology
Pay phones in my Texas town have been so long gone, I couldn't even put a number of the amount of years, if I had to guess maybe 14 years ago.
Yeah you can barely find a payphone anywhere in NY these days. Believe it or not but these boxes are primarily still there because of the American's with disabilities act. Rudy Giuliani tried to have them all removed when he was Mayor but the ADA successfully prevented it from happening.
Likewise for New York. There are a few boxes that have yet to be removed, but there is no semblance of a phone inside them.
Hey Tommy if I was breaking your balls I'd tell ya to go home and get cha shinebox
It's funny even though its a very old car it looks like it could be the car of the future in one way..
It certainly does have a "Jetsons" look to it, doesn't it? Haha. I've scheduled all shorts this week for 6.30am, just to see if the time change helps any.
Well the hood scoop and the side vents say it is a '67. So what year is it?
Hey there. The registration sticker in the window said it was a 63, however, you are almost certainly correct. When I was looking at the car the owner started telling me about parts he had exchanged. It went in one ear and out the other for me because I don't know the first thing about cars, so I am going to guess that the mods you noticed on this '63 Chevy are indeed correct. It is a 63 though.
Glendale is a pretty mellow town.. Not quite as hustling and bustling as its neighboring town Ridgewood.. The marquee, awesome stuff.. I like when they live stuff unchanged😎
Apparently the ACME sign is still on the building at the top, but they painted over it. I spent ages down there on one visit trying to make the sign out, but I couldn't do it. This theater was also "Affectionately" called THE ITCH!! No thank you sir, I'll give it a pass.
Thanks for the little walk leading up to the Glendale Memorial. NY must be filled with countless memorial sites, wonder how many have been erased due to expansion of the city getting bigger and bigger.
Many of them have been redesigned over the years, but I'm pretty sure they all still exist. Most of the time, as expansion grows, the memorials become smaller and smaller. One day I will film the smallest plot of land in New York. It is the size of a triangle paving slab. Someone purchased a building, but when they submitted their plans they made an error on the property size. So a corner triangle of the previous property remained the property of the previous owners :) It still exists to this day with its own marker on the slab.
@@richardarthur-nycstories There's also triangle paving stone at 7 ave & christopher st nyc by the Optimo store, if it still exists. That's the only one that I knew of, there must be dozens around ny.
@@mick-mykola-dementiuk Yep, that's the one that I was talking about. The cigar store closed within the last year so I don't know what took over the building.
I used to go to boyscout meetings there in the late 90s/early 2000s
It has quite the history, doesn't it?
Thank you Richard ❤
Thanks so much for watching, I appreciate it.
Glendale will always have a place in my❤ I'm in Levittown N.Y. now but still miss Glendale ❤
That's funny, I used to work in a group home in Levittown!! I live in Maspeth now but it is always nice to visit the old neighborhood.
Funny to be watching this in the heat of summer and see all those folks in the video walking around in their jackets, it must have been a cool spring day when you filmed this! But that's the beauty of getting plenty of material in the bank so to speak so you can post it later. I've tried to do the same myself this year but I'm actually wondering what (or if) I'll have something to post this week myself, the well is almost dry! Looking at the store fronts as they go by and had to stop and go back to one at 5:16 Peter Eater?? Alrighty then, interesting name that. I know what you mean about old, shakycam footage, got a few of those old ones also, and probably a LOT of places I wish we'd been filming from years of travel gone by. But going forward is the only way to go. A very nice Veterans Memorial to wrap up a great walkaround the neighborhood, Richard.
I totally missed Peter Eater so I went back to have a look. What I found interesting is that they are using the 'Wimpy' cartoon character from Popeye. I'm sure you can think back to the Wimpy hamburger chain in the USA up until the late 70s? I think it was more popular in the UK where there are still dozens of restaurants that operate under that franchise name. Perhaps I can give you some inside secrets? ;) Some of my most viewed videos are actually shorter repeats of older videos, but I have given them a fresh start with some new narration. Let's say you have a 20 minute video, maybe something like an old Pike Place video. Chances are, as happens to all of us, the last 5 minutes of the video was barely watched. So what I normally do is cut those 5 final minutes from the video and upload it as a new video, lol. I'm dead serious. Ain't nobody going to know any different :) Don't worry if you have deleted the original video, you can download your own videos directly from TH-cam.
Watching this was a great way to start the weekend, Richard! Quite interesting! I especially liked the footage of the former movie theater and the Glendale veteran's memorial. Please keep up the good work, Fabulous Friend!
It's funny, on any given weekend these 'walks' through neighborhoods get more views than my stories do. However, they don't have longevity whereas each story is pretty much watched every day long after it has been posted. It does help knowing a little bit about the area I am walking in.
@@richardarthur-nycstories Indubitably!
I know you have taken us down (up?) Myrtle Ave before but nothing looked familiar till the German restaurant came into view- I do remember that from an early video! Am watching Bournemouth Airshow- the Lancaster and now 2 Spitfires displaying- does make you realise what terrible sacrifices were made in times of war plus they play the music from the film ‘The Battle of Britain’ so very moving! Thanks Richard!
Yeah the restaurant is really well known so I always try to include it if I am in the area, which is infrequent. This was at the end of a long day filming and I was about to get a bus, but I figured I still had one more mile left in my that I could walk, lol. Did you actually go to the show or was it on television? I looked it up online to see what they had. My family name, which is not a very popular name outside of Devon, is also the name of an aircraft, so I looked to see if one of them was at the show.
@@richardarthur-nycstories No I wasn’t there- they had a lovely day yesterday but today looked maybe like drizzle! I am subbed to a military aircraft channel- I think several were recording it! It’s much safer to display over the sea. I watched Eastbourne Airshow a week or so ago. Guess what-the Lancaster returned right by the side of our house. Very low- it never flies very high! It’s glorious to see it. There are only 2 flying in the world- the other is in Canada! My son heard it coming & identified it from the engine noise! It went on to display at Biggleswade & Leicester- then went ‘home’ to Conigsbury I followed it to see where it went( on ‘ Plane Finder’) I didn’t see an ‘ Arthur’ plane. I do like air shows- there aren’t so many these days and both Bournemouth and Eastbourne are threatened with closure next year! If you subbed to a military flight channel or just an airplane channel you can watch these displays ‘live’. Bye for now!
@@dianarolph1770 Diana, 'Richard' and 'Arthur' are my legal first and middle names :) I avoided using my real surname for privacy reasons. What is funny though is that my surname is directly from an area in Devon, but the person who named his airplane's with his own surname was actually an American. In the USA it is documented that there are less than 500 people with my surname. Not sure what it is in the UK where it will obviously be higher.
@@dianarolph1770 I actually found the number after a search, there are only 1,900 people in the UK with the same surname as me.
@@richardarthur-nycstories you do see a preponderance of surnames in certain areas- only have to look at Cornwall with all the ‘Pen….’ Surnames! My friend was a Feasey and they were found mostly in North Bucks! ( where she lived.) Years ago people very often stayed in an area all their lives never travelling so the names remained local. It’s a very interesting topic.
It has seen better days for sure.. Must have been in a multiple car accident.
Sufferin' Sucatash! That certainly is one mangled machine!
Jinkies! Had NO idea there was anything name after the late great Charles Atlas! You find the coolest things to share, Friend Richard!
I have an even better Charles Atlas story that I look forward to filming in October. There is a sculpture on a New York City landmark, but virtually nobody knows that the model for that sculpture was none other than Charles Atlas.
@@richardarthur-nycstories Looking forward to that! He was the "go to" guy for skinny fellas who were tired of losing their gals at the beach to bigger chaps who would kick sand in their faces!
Gorgeous car !!
It sure is!
@@richardarthur-nycstories You betcha !! 👍🤓
Wow.. Named after Charles Atlas.. 💪.. Dynamic tension, no more sand kicked in your face at the beach..😂How about that.. It used to be a factory/ industrial area up until at least the mid 90's, In fact there is a small section by 83 or 84 street off Cooper where there are still some factories that remain.. Good stuff bud.. I like these interesting little stories..
When I went to film this (it was years ago ;)) I actually went under the bridge towards to industrial area, but I found it was better to film from the top of the bridge looking down at the industrial parts. I clipped this and figured it would be good enough for the Wednesday garbage that I always put up, lol.
Lovely.
Indeed it is.
@@richardarthur-nycstories I enjoy all of the "pre- war " cars, But, rarely does one see a Pontiac.
Beautifull car
Isn't it just!!
That's a funky old car 😎.. I wonder how they find parts for those cars.. I guess there is a market for it but I would imagine it's still difficult
It's probably why car junkyards never throw so much as a bolt away, someone will need it one day ;)
nice
Thanks

Thank you for sharing your personal story!! This is where they would get together of an evening and they all went to school just up the road from here in a place called Forest Hills High School. Obviously in different years but Simon and Garfunkel also attended the same school.
My grandparents and some uncles and aunts are buried here, as well as a childhood friend and her family. Its pretty much filled up. I lived in walking distance of this cemetary for 10 yrs.
In the section on the other side of Metropolitan Ave, I have filmed the cemetery for almost an hour in past videos. As you probably know though, this section of the cemetery is guarded quite well against people taking photographs and videos.
@@richardarthur-nycstories my family is buried on the 80th street side, across from St. Margarets's Church. They are just inside the gate, not far from the road. They have the graves since the 1940s when my great uncle was first buried there. He came here from Italy in 1895 and became a real estate and insurance salesman. That's how he was able to afford the plot for he and his wife. My grandmother "borrowed" a grave from him when my grandfather died in 1956 because she didn't have a grave. They wouldn't let her put a marker on the grave because she didn't own it, so there is just a blank stone cross to mark my grandfather. I also heard that my grandmother's family didn't like her husband, so that could have been why too.
@@JTRocks4Ever In a video that I did just a few weeks ago I actually took a walk along 80th, starting at the church and heading down to the flower shop. I was on the cemetery side of the street.
Try and get round the back. Or let a neighbour let you look out of the window.
Unfortunately I don't live right in the area, but I agree with you, the back view can often be overlooked. For the Cypress Hills Massacre video that I did, and the one on Henry Hill's Suite Lounge, I went around to the back for those locations.
@@richardarthur-nycstories I’ll check those out
Cool.. Did you hear those police choppers this morning about 5:30-6:00 AM circling around the neighborhood? At one point it sounded like there must have been two of them.. Woke me up out of sound sleep.. One must have been hovering over and the other one circling.. At least it sounded that way.. I wanted to film it but I just couldn't get my lazy ass out of bed.. 😂
Actually I didn't!! The neighbors were making a row up until 4am so I didn't get to bed until way late. Right now I am trying to curtail filming any more shorts for the time being, I still have about 40 yet to post, lol. I'm probably going to go to either Europe of South Korea in November, so I will load up on shorts then. Full videos outside of New York tank on my channel, so I will only film a handful of full videos wherever I decide to go.
So much respect for the fire dept.
Behind the truck would have been the local view of the World Trade Center, and this fire department here lost the most firemen that day out of all New York fire departments. I've filmed footage of the station and the nearby memorial for a story in the coming weeks.
Groovy! Thank you, Richard!
Right behind the truck was the view of the World Trade Center, and this station house lost the most firemen that day.
@@richardarthur-nycstories How sad. I hope none of us ever forgets their bravery & sacrifice.
Very nice, Richard! Thanks! Love the color of that Falcon. And don't think I've seen a Falcon convertible til now. When I was a kid in the 60s, a family on our block had a Falcon station wagon. And a Falcon pickup can be seen in the 1964 James Bond 007 classic "Goldfinger". A very popular vehicle from Ford all thru the 1960s!
I don't know if the made a Falcon convertible other than '64, the only ones that I have seen are that year, but then again I'm not exactly a big car aficionado.
@@richardarthur-nycstories I too don't know a whole lot about cars. But being a child of the 60s, the autos of that decade have a special place in my heart.
Chris Conners - Real Name Mary Jean Loutsenhizer was a jazz singer who had a few popular albums in the 50's & 60's. I'm surprised that Henry Hill actually got her to perform at his lounge. Great video by the way
I can't even tell you how long it took me to find that advertisement :) I had to search through the archives of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle until I found one. "Suite Lounge" isn't a very easy term to search as there are tens of thousands of hits to wade through.
@@richardarthur-nycstories Amazing you found it.. I noticed there is a few negative comments on this thread Don't ever let those insidious fools bum you out. We live in a time where people weren't taught gratitude as children - *CHEERS* and thanks again for the great video
@@trevmac8362 It's like water off a duck's back for me. Nothing said on the Internet by a stranger has any effect on me ;) What I liked about this video was that I was also able to find other newspaper articles for the location, and in a later video that I did I was also able to discover why the "For Men Only" hair salon was given as being in two locations. Henry said that it was a couple of blocks away, but he also said that it was next door. From my amateur sleuth work I found out that the salon was originally next door to The Suite Lounge, but when Henry came out of prison it was two blocks away. I found newspaper ads for both locations :)
Damn poor Billy Batts was just a kid
Enjoyed today’s walk and story about the old town hall, quite a bit of history!
Wasn't much of a walk going from one end of the building to the other and back, lol. Still, there is indeed a lot of history attached to this small building.
I Miss that view. I use to live in maspeth on 65 place by O’Neills
Ironic that it had the best view of the Trade Center, but the firehouse behind me where I am filming this lost the most fireman in NY in the attack.
I like these nostalgic cars and songs.. I Imagine being 18 and owning a car like that.. And then 30 seconds reality hits..😂😂😂
I didn't have time to edit a proper video today so I clipped this from the car show video, so it is basically an extra car video to those that I already have. Next week I have 4 shorts already pre-posted. Hazmat1, a repeat of a vintage car that tanked the first time I posted it, lol, Atlas Park Mall and a car wreck parked on the streets.
Looks like I’m union and meeker might be 90th precinct not sure but always love your police and fire videos. Thanks for their service.
You were close!! I was on the other side of the BQE on Metropolitan at Union. I'm guessing as it was a special ops vehicle it was probably a loaner, hence why no precinct on the car.
Thank You!!! I never knew it was right there by that WENDY'S. I attended many meetings in the ASSEMBLY HALL OF JEHOVAHS WITNESSES years ago & heard about that arena -- but never knew it was on the other end of the block. Thank You!!!
I mean when you think about it the arena would have been attached pretty much to that building when it was the Bliss theater. There was also a Madison Square Garden in Sunnyside, but it didn't last long because no champion would fight there. It became known as the champion's graveyard because every champion who fought there lost their title, so therefore no champion wanted to fight there once they knew that :)
Awesome.. My late uncle who was a boxer new all about Sunnyside garden arena.
It's been a while but I think that we talked about your uncle before, right? He has a page up on boxrec if I remember. Tony Danza fought at Sunnyside Garden, but I will be honest, I haven't studied the cards yet. I've filmed it for a future full length video once I have studied it. One thing that I found out is that Bruno Sammartino wrestled Gorgeous George at Sunnyside Garden. That was before Sammartino became a major star and it was at the end of George's career.
Yes.. We had talked about my Uncle.. I remember you sent me the link to his boxing record.. Yes Tony Danza was a fighter before he went into acting. I remember my uncle telling me back in the day about all the fights that took place at Sunnyside gardens.. Bruno Sammartino was awesome
I'm not a fan of boxing, but that's a lovely monument. Thank you, Richard!
I actually recorded about 8 minutes of footage to tell a story on the arena later on. Even the actor, Tony Danza, boxed here :)
@@richardarthur-nycstories Fascinating! I had forgotten that actor Tony Danza was once a boxer.
Many of the priests who served in the Diocese of Brooklyn are buried here also.
That was something that I did not know!!
