My favourite Jupiter-6 facts are that Ray Parker Jr's "Ghostbusters" was done with one, as was the original Thomas the Tank Engine theme and score. 😀

You’ve hit the nail on the head. So many people chase gear, thinking if only they owned synth X they could sound like artist Y. But the reality is, a great musician knows how to work with the constraints of an instrument, and can make even the cheapest bit of gear sound amazing.

Love that Chaka Khan I Feel For You stab at the intro. I have a JX-3P, worth checking it out, the Jupiter 4 is what you need next, then have the set. Nice demo and really good programming, made what is normally a brittle sounding machine fatter than a tiled floor in a kebab house.

    • @AtonalMeasureRecords
      @AtonalMeasureRecords 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

On "feel for you", I always thought those synth stabs were from David Franks Oberheim Obxa, but he said all the synths on that track were from a brand new yamaha DX1 brought into Arif Mardins studio and a moog source was used for the bass.

  • @TheOfficialArtOfAsh

I think the best way to describe the JP-8 and JP-6 is this:
If you want to do classic warm, bright synth-pop tracks and lush pad sounds and big brass sounds, the JP-8 wins.
But if you want to do darker, colder, sort of techno-pop or horrorwave sort of sounds, I'd say the JP-6 wins.
One of the reasons I prefer the JP-6 to the JP-8 is that you can combine waveforms, have more syncronizing capabilities, and more pulse width modulation capabilities, so as a result I think it's better for bass sounds and lead sounds. But hell, they're both great machines in their own right.

The SH101 uses IR3109 for both the OSC and filter.
The Jupiter 6 uses IR3R01 for the oscillator and IR3R05 for the filter. It is very diffrent, but it is similar to the MKS-80 (Rev4) and the JX-3P that also uses the IR3R01 and the IR3R05.
The IR305 filter chip is common to other Roland synths like the Juno 106 and Alpha Juno.

I've never understood why people say the Jupiter 6 sounds thin and cold, it isnt, a lot of the problem was the factory sounds, the 6 like the 8 can sound big and warm, the 8 just has the advantage of stereo outs, put the 6 through a stereo out chorus and the program a pad like on the 8 and I promise you it'll fill out a song, I used the 6 a lot when it came out in a studio in Sheffield.

Anyway having the Cherry Audio version (Mercury 6 and 4) is quite a god send along with the CR78 they released which is brilliant, a big fan of this lot as they seem to nail it on the head with adding the feeling of being back in 80's with there software. Anyway the question to ask is at this time should people hold on to the original microKORG which is about to be replaced by version 2 and, will this be a future air loom worth fortunes in pristine box condition, absolutely! You should feature this item on a future posting with how this has added value to music since its release in 2002, simple keyboards to work with are always the best!.

I can't afford the real hardware so I picked up the virtual instrument plugin of the Jupiter-6 and it's pretty incredible. I'm having a hard time figuring out what this board is best at. I like how you use it as a "funk" tool, I ended up doing things that sound like '80s Sci-Fi soundtrack music. It does sound a bit more "angry" than the other synths, but I really like it!

I tried these 3 times and i never liked the sound of them. I guess i was always expecting them to sound like a big american synth. So not really sure what they are supposed to sound like. Looks lke youve got it though. ❤

I’d go for the Jupiter 8 as well but your arguments in defense of the 6 are spot on. Some rather similar things could actually be said when comparing the CS80 and CS70M. The 80 is the massive expressive one. The 70 the more mainstream, flexible one that might at times also come just close enough to a Minimoog or whatever. 👍

This is such a cool synth! Less well known than its Roland siblings. I've been a Juno fan until now... time to check Reverb for a Jupiter 6! at 3:42 - am I hearing Robot Rock? or am I hallucinating Daft Punk?

It does indeed have that early hip hop vibe. Could explain a lot. Although not my favorite genre early hiphop was the last really new style of music as far as I am concerned and the early wave had a lot of engaged positivity. Then came Gangsta and all went to (beep). Thanks for another great demo.
