Ace to see you with one, awesome programming and plays as ever.
My favourite Jupiter-6 facts are that Ray Parker Jr's "Ghostbusters" was done with one, as was the original Thomas the Tank Engine theme and score. 😀

You’ve hit the nail on the head. So many people chase gear, thinking if only they owned synth X they could sound like artist Y. But the reality is, a great musician knows how to work with the constraints of an instrument, and can make even the cheapest bit of gear sound amazing.

This is great, Matt. I never came across the Jupiter 6 so it was really refreshing to hear its palette - you’ve demoed some really cool sounds, and I agree that as a keys player, and often orchestrator, you need different characters in your arsenal, and this synth has it in spades. It’s not cool at all, which is why it’s great!

    Hi Matt,
I've never understood why people say the Jupiter 6 sounds thin and cold, it isnt, a lot of the problem was the factory sounds, the 6 like the 8 can sound big and warm, the 8 just has the advantage of stereo outs, put the 6 through a stereo out chorus and the program a pad like on the 8 and I promise you it'll fill out a song, I used the 6 a lot when it came out in a studio in Sheffield.

I think the best way to describe the JP-8 and JP-6 is this:
If you want to do classic warm, bright synth-pop tracks and lush pad sounds and big brass sounds, the JP-8 wins.
But if you want to do darker, colder, sort of techno-pop or horrorwave sort of sounds, I'd say the JP-6 wins.
One of the reasons I prefer the JP-6 to the JP-8 is that you can combine waveforms, have more syncronizing capabilities, and more pulse width modulation capabilities, so as a result I think it's better for bass sounds and lead sounds. But hell, they're both great machines in their own right.

Epic synth from Roland, got a Jupiter 50 but that is for something completely different 😅
Around 6:10 those sounds made me think of Richard Barbieri (Japan).

This made me regret not buying a Jupiter-6 for a good price last year.
Not that i'm too sad, i went for a Oberheim Xpander instead.

The Jupiter 6 was used for the Laura Palmer's theme from the 90's T.V show twin peaks. It was also used for foreigners hit record

Hiya bud, I was specifically talking about the Laura Palmer's theme, which is the pad sound moby sampled for his
hit record Go. I read online somewhere that it was done on a Jupiter 6, but after doing some research online you
are absolutely right, it was done on the JX10. My bad.

Great video! I’d be interested to see you compare your J6 to something modern like the UDO Super 6 series. For most of us an old Jupiter is too expensive and too hard to maintain but I wondered what modern synths might cover similar sonic territory - obviously being slightly cheaper and not 40 years old there’s an appeal here!

Yeah I think there are a lot of similarities with the super 6 although that sounds much more lush and less aggressive to me. Great synth

So lovely to see you with new beast of a machine! Also fantastic demonstration!
I would say, that finding J6 to be sounding thin is a bit of an illusion of its sound, because it is very dynamic and lets out a lot of high frequencies.. Quite many of classic polysynths were tamed by static lowpass filters or calibration routines to filter out "harsh" higher frequencies and hence sounded more big / warm due that limited frequency response and higher saturation of sound, while J6 simply allows the whole dynamic spectrum to go out and shine wildly.
All the best to you, enjoy the music!

I can't afford the real hardware so I picked up the virtual instrument plugin of the Jupiter-6 and it's pretty incredible. I'm having a hard time figuring out what this board is best at. I like how you use it as a "funk" tool, I ended up doing things that sound like '80s Sci-Fi soundtrack music. It does sound a bit more "angry" than the other synths, but I really like it!

  • @sfleeee

The filter ladders sound a lot like the start of Let it Whip by the Dazz Band. In fact I can hear this synth on so many 80s funk/disco records it’s crazy. Never really delved into the 6 before so this has been enlightening!
