Matt's studio reminds me of my bedroom studio from the late 90's. Juno 106, check, old Moog, check. Rack gear and a computer at the side, but not in the centre of the action! I had a electric piano back then too, but it was a Yamaha CP80M!
Headhunters period is some of the most advanced funk ever. Pressure cooker grooves from deepest outer space. Hard to beat Herbie when it comes to tasty rhodes, clav & synths. You nailed his sound there, Matt. Love the bite on your e-piano when you dig in. Respec an ting ;)
You're such a great teacher! You explain everything so that even a layman like me can understand. And after every video i would like to start right away. The sound is really stunning ... thanks for sharing ❤
Whooo that Moog bass is gettin me to make that stank face!! Matt you’re an international treasure! This is exactly why I make music, I’m happy to share some of the same inspirations as you.
I love the Thrust album! 🎹 Another underrated gem is Donald Byrd’s Ethiopian Knights, which has two album side smoking 💥hot, funk jams and one short cringey throwaway. Another great album from the 1990’s that your audience might like is Slide Five’s “People, Places, and Things.” Great chilled, spacious, funky Rhodes and urban beat. Matt, you have a dream studio! The blue synth looks and sounds fantastic!
I can almost see Huggy Bear giving Starsky and Hutch his latest tip off and then they roar away in that red Ford Torino with the infamous white stripe....Happy Days....Great playing!
This was such a fun workflow walkthrough. I was also hearing some Weather Report in some of these patches. Your videos never cease to motivate me to go jam. 🤝
Herbie Hancock is my musical idol, and Headhunters and Thrust are up there with my favourite albums ever. There are snippets of Headhunter’s live performances on TH-cam. I find myself watching them over and over and over again. Thanks for this video Matt, and keep up the exceptional content 😁
Man this is so good! LOVE that Headhunters album, these sounds are great, and of course the playing is world-class. Thanks for the tips! Picking up the sample patches now...
Omg happy days! Matt Johnson injection of awesome on all dimensions flowing into my world ... much love... .from fellow songwriter and "kindred musical taste haver"...🔱 🥰🥰🥰😍😍🤑🤩🤠🥳🧐😻🫀🧞♂🦚🐋🗽🪂🚁🛸🌝🌞🌟🎭🎺🪄🎯📈📈📈📈📈
I loved your description of the RE-201’s spring reverb. I have one too, and it might be the worst spring reverb I’ve ever heard, but I love it in a major way even though (or maybe especially because) it really does stink of the ‘70s. This was also a great reminder of how good reverb before compression can sound!
thanks for showcase the urei as well as part of your chain. i feel like folks don't always talk about the huge difference signal processing outside of the synth itself can have on the over all sound. i have a suspicion that what comes after the synthesizer in the recording chain creates the sought after "analog warmth" associated with classic synth sounds.
15:02 Hi Matt. The last two chords you're playing using the Solina patch with the phaser are very reminiscent of "In The Light of Day" from the first U.K. album. I wonder if this is how Eddie Jobson went about creating that pad patch.
Just bought the sample pack - awesome sounds in Logic! Absolutely love the Rhodes ... If you ever feel inclined to make a sample pack of that i will snap it up! Thanks!
Matt, a great virtual analogue synth that gets a lot (and I mean a lot of hate) is the Viscount OB-12 (badged as Oberheim OB-12, which is why it gets the hate because it sounds nothing like a Oberheim). I've just made some of the most spacey ARP Odyssey leads on it and it really is a fabulous synth (if you ignore the factory presets and make your own). It has a built in delay which is super spacey and trippy. Would love for you to get one and make a video and a Matt Johnson Patch bank would be amazing :) I honestly think you would love the OB-12; it is like a polyphonic ARP Odyssey with dual OSC's, Ring Mod, heaps of modulations and a 'trip to space' delay built in. IMO is one of the most beautiful looking synths (when it is on and all lit up).
For best Headhunters results use an ARP Odyssey. That is what synth Herbie Hancock was playing. Of course you can get close with any analog synth, but the Odyssey has some kind of bite, as opposed to the roundness and low mid girth of a Moog. As I read somewhere else and as you can hear when you compare : Moog is Funkadelic, Arp is Headhunters.
@@MattJohnsonJamiroquai I mean : Hancock in Headhunters, George Duke in Zappa, Matt Johnson in Jamiroquai. Sounds pretty necessary to me. Joking of course, but I thought about the fact that there was no arp in your collection when writing the comment and was wondering if there was any particular reason for that.
Great lesson on making those specific sounds. Just a remark regarding the video: Sometimes out of focus makes it harder to watch. See it more often that for some setups DSLR cameras are bad at doing this. Instead a set of cheap to middle class android smartphones do a better job. Most of them can take a SD card for easy data exchange. Perhaps that's an option - guess for the money of selling one camera you would get 3 brand new smartphones ;)
Have you done any videos where you rate keyboards and synths? I’ve been thinking about trying to set up a second keyboard to control some analog synths above my Roland and I’d love to hear your opinions on boards, synths or the like or even just different kinds of setups for the keys
Matt you are getting better and better with these keyboards. You should be in a band or something
😂👍
🤣🤣
😂
No, that would be virtual insanity… 😂
Ive gone through the funk era and Herbie! (as many more) I'm 64 now!! You did a brilliant job with this!! Greetings, Levi in Sweden
Yes! As soon as I saw the thumbnail imagine I was in! Of all the synth and keyboard sounds, these 70s tones are by far my favorite!
Marvellous how you just fling out those fantastic how-tos like it's nothing. You're such a great teacher. Thank you, Matt!
Matt's studio reminds me of my bedroom studio from the late 90's. Juno 106, check, old Moog, check. Rack gear and a computer at the side, but not in the centre of the action! I had a electric piano back then too, but it was a Yamaha CP80M!
those Model D tones sounded beautifully thick and full
Always loved those string sounds through a phaser. I loved the late 70's early 80's.
@11:44 after absolutely blowing my mind with that string sound he goes "Yeeahh I'm happy with that." Same, dude. Same.
That was a 70s funk masterclass - thanks Matt!
The E7 synth sounds sooooooooo good!
Who got the funk? Matt's got the funk! Really enjoyed that opening ditty!
It's not just the sounds, it's also the notes. Great playing!
You're such a great teacher! You explain everything so that even a layman like me can understand. And after every video i would like to start right away. The sound is really stunning ... thanks for sharing ❤
Man you make it look so fluid Matt. i guess there's no alternative to just playing every night. Love your style mate.
@ghost mall too true
I’ll be seeing Herbie live on the west coast of Canada in like three weeks. Can’t wait!!
Whooo that Moog bass is gettin me to make that stank face!! Matt you’re an international treasure! This is exactly why I make music, I’m happy to share some of the same inspirations as you.
Reverb before compression 🙌🎶 I'm right there with you 👍 The other way around washes out the punch. I love your content Matt, thanks for sharing man ✌️

You are genius Matt! It's pure plasure to watch and hear you playing. Thank you for sharing your brilliant experience
I'm crying everytime I'm seeing you playing like that!! What a sound, what a groove !!!
Crazy how I was listening to Herbie today and, I then came across this video.. Man those sounds are cold..... Man love the page 👑💯

Word on the street is Matt Johnson is one cool cat.

These are some great samples, very musical. Particularly like the Vibanet!

Another masterclass in the can 😮❤
Thank you so much! Love the mini moog patch and the phased strings!
The way you explain construction of sounds is absolutely great!! Thank you Matt!!
I learn so much watching your channel Matt. Much respect ✊

0:20 such a jamiroquai phrase right there love this homage to Herbie Hancock
Herbie is the OG!
100%, that jumped straight out at me. Then I went back, several times, to repeat the aural loveliness 😀
I love the album Thrust. Such amazing keyboard sounds.

Love this channel Matt - inspiring, and your enthusiasm always puts me in a good mood - thank you!!
You are awesome Matt Johnson 🎶💯🎹
Man that’s some daaamn funky stuff! Set me up for the whole day of Herbie 🎉
Absolutely brilliant
Thanks for the detailed explanation. Love the style
Thanks for the link too!
These sounds make me smile!!! Awesome retro job, Matt!
Kids get down underground
Everybody dance to the funky sound!!!
Like a gourmet of sound… ah, pleasure for the brains
The way you play the sounds make up the sounds. Funky.
Herbie is actually coming here to Sweden this summer!
Yes, Thrust is my fav!
man, what a cool array of sounds... congrats
Thanks Matt for the tutorial you do not fake da funk. In fact you are seriously funky.
Thank you sir!
I really like it, especially moog bass and string sound. It would be great if samples could also be converted as a montage/modx bank.
they could if you put them first into Kontakt then use sample robot
Gracias amigo, saludos desde México 🇲🇽
It's really fun watching you unpack all the nice stuff, and obviously enjoying your musical life.
Just discovered this channel. Cool.
I always love your video's! All Hail the Funk!
Rad finish! Natural style as always. Thanks!
Very nice Matt this is super dope
Wonderful sounds! It's really all in the execution and control that makes everything so effective. Otherwise it can be just a bunch of riffs.
So helpful! Thanks Matt
Awesome! Would love it if you could do a full video on funky clav playing. Thanks for sharing this!
I did you can find it on my page
@@MattJohnsonJamiroquai Ahh, cool, thanks!!
Great video as always Matt! Thank you
Absolute gold knowledge, every time. Awesome.
Truly inspiring! Thanks for sharing this masterclass, amazing.
lol, Matt you are the best ! .. much love !
That was a lovely string sound! I love the Solina as I owned one 25 years ago but much prefer making modern equivalents.
Love this content. Love your Style, Matt. Thanks.
Whenever I test out a synth at the Chicago Music Exchange, I always try to dial in a “Matt Johnson” preset, especially 70’s funk. :-)
Dr Mix was just doing Herbie Hancock too. its synchronicity i guess Matt. All the best mate.
oh really I'll have to check that out!
Dr. Mix is just too weird, I can't watch.
@@antikytheramechanism7909 Ha Ha true that.
Dr Mix did more of an 80s Herbie feel, with all of the sounds coming from the Roland Fantom.
Hi Matt. How about a tutorial on sampling? I always struggle with Synth Pads and sustain and general work flow stuff. Thanks!
Im on my beginners sound design module at uni :) Thanks for this dude
great tutorial matt.... wishing you great health
Absolutely fantastic sounds!

If you ever do a custom patch set for the E7, I will buy it!
Ahahaha, right up my alley, guvnor! Thank you x
Great playing as usual mate.
The Clav left hand sounds like a Cuica …. So some Brazillian Azymuth sounds as well.
Матт, , спасибо за видео и за разъяснение! Мое почтение! ✌🏻😎
That's the stuff!! :D I imagine you've got a couple more albums to release by now with all of these demos!

superb! always enjoy your content
Fantastic musicianship on display, as always. But the state of that Minimoog... could use a bit of restoration work on it and a general cleaning.
You are right!
Just bought the sample pack - awesome sounds in Logic! Absolutely love the Rhodes ... If you ever feel inclined to make a sample pack of that i will snap it up! Thanks!
Superb! These are the kind of sounds i love! 🎹🎶🤗
Matt, you need to convince Jay to sing over that 70ties jam!!

Hi Matt, can I ask where the drums come from ? Does it comes from a loop samples library (and which one :p ) ?
