She wasn't perfect. The times weren't ideal. She did as is. Best as she could.

According to a Stephen Au (Hong Kong martial artist and TV host who recently started his TH-cam channel ).. he had interviewed Ruby 2 weeks before she passed away.
Bruce never paid Ruby a cent nor worked in the Restaurant. He did live in the box room above the restaurant.
She says she had plenty of workers, she didn't need Bruce to work for her. 🤔
      Interesting but I cannot verify.
Would love to visit Seattle again. Beautiful city.

Visited the site of Ruby Chow's restaurant last year. Sadly long gone and is now a hospital car park. I was told by someone who knew her that she was a "Dragon lady". Probably why her and Bruce Lee didn't get along.

J W I’m family, so don’t float that “dragon lady” crap here. That’s just the kind of language used to keep powerful women down throughout history.

I apologize as it seems my comment may have unintentionally caused offense. I took it to mean she had a strong personality and this led to clashes between her and Bruce. I believe that the restaurant was the first outside of Seattle's Chinatown district and I in fact had a 10 mile round trip walk just to take photos of the former site. So again sorry for any offence .

I’ll share a couple of things. If you watch the latest 30 for 30 on Bruce Lee, you’ll see photos of Bruce and the Chow family that I’ve not seen before. Must be from the Bruce Lee family. So, maybe a more positive relationship than you’d think. Unrelated but interesting, Seattle’s Chinese community was small then. If I talk to Aunties about Bruce Lee it sounds like they all dated him, or he dated their sister, or something. Sounds like he cut a wide swathe in his short time.

      @@tygraham hi Mr Graham
Good to hear.. i had listened to a piece from Steven Au (Hong Kong TV host who has his own channel now on TH-cam - all Cantonese though).
He mentioned he interviewed Ruby in her home just a few weeks before she passed. He was very excited when she told him that she kept some of the decor and furnishings form her old restaurant in one of her rooms/storage.
He also says he saw there was a photo of her and Bruce on the mantelpiece. So it seemed she didn't "Hate" Bruce.
He didn't play out the recording of their interview (would have been all in English - is it true Ruby didn't speak Cantonese?) - though it seems Bruce never paid her a cent, and he lived in the box room upstairs, and not in a closet under stairs 😅 I guess these things were over 50 years ago, so not many would recall accurately.

@@DragonDreamVNY Ruby and her older two sons spoke Cantonese. Her husband, Ping, spoke limited English. So Cantonese was necessary just to function. There were photos of Bruce Lee and General and madam Chiang Kai Shek prominently featured in her home. That’s what I remember.

If you read Matthew Polly's terrific bio on Bruce Lee, you may be disappointed as I was that she had him living in a closet under the stairs.

That seems to contradict what Stephen Au (Bruce Lee fanatic and Hong Kong TV host/actor) says in his interview with Ruby Chow regarding Bruce Lee. Apparently Bruce lived in a box room upstairs of the restaurant and didn't have to work there, or pay rent to her. Who knows, people have different takes 🤔
Hard to believe it's been over 50-60 years and most of this is before I was even born. 🤔

Did Matthew Polly interview Ruby to question her about this closet accommodation? According to Bruce's Hong Kong friends, he was a tough guy and would not be bullied. Mate, you should watch Stephen Au's TH-cam videos, his interviews and details about Bruce is impeccable.

She did not have good relationship with Bruce Lee! Bruce Lee’s Mom paid her for Bruce Lee living in her home secretly. That was not free, and Bruce Lee also worked at her restaurant at low pay before taking Kung Fu to support his schooling. You can Google search, they did not have good relationship
