I did beat it without a guide. I bought it new and beat it over the summer. I had an entire spiral notebook full of notes. I did get stuck for about 2 weeks, as there is a part with a puzzle, and I didn't realize I could look up
There is a good reason why atrus can't rewrite saavedro's age. It is because if you change the writing of an age too much, the descriptive book will cease to link to that age and instead link to an entirely different (albeit similar) age.
That's an interesting aspect of the lore I was not aware of, I imagine that's spelled out in the novels?
I'm pretty sure it's in one of the games as well. Can't recall which one. It has been ages since I've gone through all 6 games.

Good job. Exile was my first Myst game, so it has a special place in my heart. Another commenter already mentioned that there are reasons for Atrus not making changes to an age after it's written (Gehn's tinkering was part of the reason why Riven was said to be so unstable), but I wouldn't be doing my part as a pedant if i didn't point out J'nanin doesn't rhyme with Janine 😅 It's got an apostrophe and an extra N in it and everything.

Just played and finished Riven a week ago without a guide and I'm not sure I'm very good at puzzle games. One of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Calling it a bad puzzle game is utterly bizarre to me based on my own experience and what I've heard from others. It's widely regarded as one of the best if not THE best puzzle adventure ever
Well I would ask you to consider the Outer Wilds comparison if you've played that. While it operates on a lot of the same environmental learning principles Riven does, it does it in a significantly more accessible way while maintaining a high standard in environmental storytelling. Moreover, Riven is a tremendous world, but to actually beat it I found the disparate elements required to solve its main puzzles a bit too disparate, to put it mildly. I will be very interested to see what they do in the Remake as they have alluded to making the game more accessible. Regardless, thanks for hearing me out in the video!
@@SardonicSays Funnily enough I got stuck in Outer Wilds and dropped the game. It's very intriguing for sure and I may return to it, but Riven seemed to make more sense to me and the realisations along the way were more satisfying from what I played.

this video put into words what I could not. I do enjoy both myst and riven, but Exile is by far my favourite game of the entire series. I feel that revelations is lacklustre, end of ages is sort of contorted to fit the tablet mechanic, myst 1 is almost too short (although I concede that that is so it could fit on one disc), and riven is too convoluted, I did get through riven without any hints, but it took a week and a half. it took me a day to figure out the animal related to the orb on gehn's desk. but for exile I got stuck for about an hour at the very end, as I thought the book atrus gave at the start was just a lore thing.
I love Exile, but my problem with it is just that when it ends, it returns to status quo... the game could not exist and everything else would have happened exactly the same in the overarching story.
Examples of how it could have been more relevant to the overarching narrative of the series:
If Saveedro's people would have been met by Atrus and end up being part of the new D'ni.
If the game happened before Releeshahn was complete and remembering about Saveedro and Narayan gave Atrus the spark he missed to complete it.
If Saveedro went to Releeshahn in the end and impact the new D'ni civilization.
Never played this. Interesting to see how this game was like, though. I find it very interesting that one of the great early games (as you point out, a contemporary with Doom) is something so... unlike anything else re. creativity and setting. Sure, there are plenty of point-and-click puzzle games - but are there many other from that era (hell, even now?) games with such worlds so imagined?

When I was a kid, I had a hard time getting into the Myst games. I was just too young. Now that I'm an adult, I'm interested, but it seems very hard to get Myst in a way that is playable on a modern machine without paying like 30 bucks for a 30 year old game. Any suggestions?
For what it's worth all the versions on steam work out of the box on modern machines, even the $6 original masterpiece edition. But yeah I hear you the remakes are a little on the pricey side. I'd wishlist it on both steam and gog and hold for a sale if you want the modern versions.
ScummVM for Mist and Riven or DuckStation for the Playstation ports. Desume for the ds poet. Uru online for Myst 5. That just leaves myst 3 and 4 on Steam.
Myst is also on Sega CD and Saturn both are emulatable. Saturn port sucks for Riven.
MST3K Refs!
It's heresy to have a bad thing to say about Riven. It's the best in the series. But the second best IS Exile for me. I couldn't finish Riven myself, but it still captivated me for years, so that says something about it. Revelation messed it up with the two brothers cheesy protrayal and the other sequels I don't even care about.
5...5 cds for riven. Mysttubers? Not really a thing. There's like 5.
