    Can I just say this? The end credits were perhaps the best production I have seen in decades for a sequence usually underdone.

    I feel like Sean might have missed the even more obvious homage about a LaForge at the helm. Geordi LaForge was a young conn officer when we first meet him in TNG and he's very eager to please. There's also that conversation that Picard has with Riker in The Next Phase where Picard mentions how he first met Geordi when he was a shuttle pilot and made an offhand remark about engine efficiency which causes LaForge to stay up all night recalibrating the shuttle's engines because he's that eager to please. Parts of it were a Demora Sulu callback, but the over-eager ensign reads like a straight callback to early TNG days to me.

    the dedication at the end of the episode hit even harder for me....I lost my mom to cancer last month, not long before the news broke about Annie. I agree Frakkes is so good in this, better than really any TNG episode or movie. I think this may be due to ALL of the various directing he has done over the years. Such a variety of programs and actors with whom he's worked made him in to a well-rounded, less static performer. They really do seem to be having too much fun.

    • @brimfire

      What's funny is that Frakes talked at length about how acting was so... foreign to him in season 1, so much so that he felt like he was failing at it. Yet you see him here, and he's having SO MUCH FUN and all I can do is but join in with him. It feels so good to see him as a grown Riker, having fun, though the ominous phrasing of his relationship with Troi leaves me kinda forlorn in a way. But hey, more episodes yet to unpack that!

I also liked how the new captain of the Titan clearly and unapologetically has prejudice against recovered Borg. Genetically there would be little to no differences between us and people 400 years from now and they would have the same tendencies regarding discrimination that we see today. Always glad to see it acknowledged as a reality of the human condition. (Also, one of the reasons I liked DS9)

    • @damienkakoschke3099

      True, Ben Sisko couldn't stand being in the same room as Picard in Episode 1 of DS9 as he had lost his wife at Wolf 359 & blamed Picard/Locutus personally & Picard rightfully knew saying "I'm sorry" wasn't going to make a dent on Sisko's resentment. Ben Sisko became enlightened both in that first episode & DS9 in general. It's fair to assume a lot of people do not forget & do not forgive (and after the Borg artifact that appeared in prev season's of Picard, there are a lot more ex-Borg getting around than just 7 of 9 and Picard/Locutus - there was Hugh, briefly, for example).

    The opening to the episode was verrrrrry reminiscent of Fallout 3's intro sequence. First "I don't want to set the world on fire" plays clearly, as though you are just listening, with camera work turning the song into an echo-y reverb version showing a scene of chaos. So I just was so pleased from the get-go.

    When 7 said 'Annika Hansen' I was hoping that this was because she now wanted to be known by that name, being in Starfleet had meant she was more in touch with being human.
    The dead name angle is interesting and obviously important, I was just sad that within the context of the show/character that the name has negative connotations.

    • @KentuckyKaiju
      @KentuckyKaiju ปีที่แล้ว +16

      The thing is, though, that there is a big difference between "7 of 9; Tertiary Adjunct to Unimatrix 01" and "Seven of Nine" (though I think it's really just Seven, now). It's a subtle but significant change between '7' and 'Seven', and why I feel those are two entirely different identities. 7 is the person the Borg made her. Seven is the person she claimed for herself.

    • @PmmGarak
      @PmmGarak ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the fact that Raffi as her lover calls her "Seven" in Season 2 made clear that that's the name close to her heart. I didn't really realize the deadnaming aspect, only the fact that Seven was uncomfortable with Annika. To me the whole scene was a reference to Captain Jellico ordering Troi back into standard uniform, which was a good thing for her. So it gave a vibe of "this captain is worse than Jellico" for me.

    • @ianhirst1148
      @ianhirst1148 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It was the captain who wanted her to be known as Annika Hansen - it wasn’t Starfleet. He clearly has some beef with the Borg as he mentioned former Borg friends clearly referring to Picard as Locutas.

    • @katrose5179
      @katrose5179 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The dead name allegory feels…kinda badly done. It was the name forced on her. Personally, I’ve always thought her not going by Seven Hansen, at least, doesn’t make much sense.

    • @KentuckyKaiju
      @KentuckyKaiju ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@katrose5179 if you want to blame anyone from a meta-context, blame Voyager’s writers for never exploring that direction in any meaningful way. By this point in the timeline, she’s been unassimilated for more of her life than she was in the Collective. It’s safe to say she chose her identity at this point, and it’s not Annika Hansen.
      And that makes sense as that’s just not who she is. She was a small child when assimilated. How many memories do you have from when you were 7 (no pun intended) and earlier? How much of a connection could she really have to her original human life and at this point? Much of her current existence has been defined by her Assimilation (for better or worse) and her journey to change her narrative from having been a victim of the collective to being The One Who Resisted. It’s not necessarily her keeping her Borg identity, it’s using that legacy to transform it into a new one. To go from ‘7 of 9’ to just ‘Seven’. One is a designation. The other is an identity.

      @Nick Singer there's also something extra, in TNG they were much more reserved with each other. I couldn't imagine Ricker saying "nice save admiral" before he became a captain, and it was great to see that evolution of their relationship, rather than just picking it up where they left off.

      I wish S3 had been S1. But one thing that did kind of make me sad was how little most of the cast have achieved in their careers compared to "All Good Things..." Picard is a washed out admiral that no one respects, Riker retired to reserve status as just a Captain, Data got blown up and then trapped in a dream instead of becoming a respected intellectual, Crusher became an on-the-run recluse instead of a respected captain of her own ship, and Q is "dead". It at least looks like La Forge had good fortune, and Worf doesn't seem to far off from his anti-time future self either.
      I suppose after growing up watching TNG as a kid and idolizing the Star Trek utopian vision, it's disappointing to see my heroes living in the same dark hopeless world we live in.

And Shaw's arrogance and by-the-book attitude definitely mirror's Captain Stiles of Excelsior. So well done, I'm so excited for the rest of the season.
    And there may even be some Abramsverse parallels.
    - The ship that shows up to face off with Blazin' Bev's at the end really reminded me of the Narada

    Rigel VII was also the planet Captain Pike, in The Cage, fought a desperate struggle and lost crew members on that mission. The Talosians helped him relive that fight, along with Vina as the damsel in distress.

    That said, sharing the exciting details, call backs, and tie ins (the ship/AI computer voice - who knew?!) are part of the JOY of being in the fandom family.
    The musical selections are beyond stupendous.
    The ship beauty shots continue to astound. Any viewer is transported into that optimistic future of boldly going Gene Roddenberry established.
    Special shout out to Wil Wheaton's Ready Room. The Annie tribute has all the feels, and is so deeply fitting.

    Overall a fantastic first episode. There was a major "up" and "down" for me thought, both regarding the Titan.
    "Up"-The ship design. This is the nicest looking ship since The Excelsior, maybe one of the best looking ships in Trek history.
    "Down"-The fact the Captain was not on the bridge leaving spacedock was kinda odd.

      Below his paygrade? Or he trusted his first officer with such 'mundane' tasks. But yeah found it odd as well :p

      He strikes me as someone who was promoted above his ability. He's clearly a talented organiser, but he's a bureaucrat. He clearly doesn't like to lead - he likes to delegate. The fact Seven disobeyed him so blatantly and he didn't even relieve her of duty says a lot - he's so by the book he doesn't understand real world unspoken protocol. He probably just ran back to his ready room to fill out the paperwork to have someone else relieve her.

      I think, and I am so very glad to be saying this, that was deliberate because it shows us something of Shaw's character. He doesn't believe Picard and Riker deserve special treatment, and he doesn't "demean himself" with such run of the mill tasks. In season 1 we had Picard telling us that Starfleet was "No longer Starfleet" - this episode we get shown it.
      I don't know what they put in the writers' coffee for this season but I really hope they had a good supply of it, because it's working...

      I liked most of season 1. Season 2 slowed down in the middle, and didn't spend enough time dealing with the things it set up, but the beginning and end were pretty good. But I love the start to season 3. It really feels like a return to Star Trek. The TNG movie we should have gotten, instead of Nemi-shit.

    Love the vid and the effort you and your co workers put in. The death of Annie Wersching affected me a lot so it was a lump in the throat moment when I saw the dedication.
    I reckon Raffi's mysterious handler is Worf because of the words "you are a warrior".
    Also when Seven calls Picard a friend it hits hard as we have seen she doesn't make/entertain friendship easily.

      My first reaction was, "Swell, Starfleet Intelligence is using an A.I. again. That'll end well." Worf makes more sense.

    The opening episodes of the last two seasons felt as if I was being beaten over the head with references to passed events in Star Trek, but the opening episode to this season, came across a fluid, with an actual story to tell. I am some what looking forward to watching this season.

    • @nicksinger1705

      There is a strong element, apparently, of the Titan being out there on their own, vulnerable and being hunted. But the 'no Starfleet' is a lot to do with a conspiracy. The show is still in the best traditions of Berman era trek. Let's not forget - the Enterprise was often out there alone without any other Starships and away from Starfleet.
