Best review of this car to date, better than the usual carbuyer, carwow, whatcar etc. Really got down to the nitty gritty. Looking forward to the on-road video.
This is a very helpful review to answer some very specific concerns I had on the driving buttons / control logic. Most helpful was when you showed what storage was available under the rear floor and where the air compressor easily goes --- I do not see another Defender video review which showed either. Thank you. I have ordered a Defender S 110 with lock rear diff, towing, 18" wheels on off-road tires and can't wait to put it into use on the farm, to replace our current Discovery 4 (which sits on 19" wheels --- with off road tires not available in the US !! ) Only regret is I can't seem to avoid the electronic on-road driving aids (do not need nor want them) and being in the United States, can only have a petrol engine. No coil springs available here, either, just so you know. I went with the P300 (instead of the Vrooom Vrooom mild hybrid P400 on 20" wheels -- a few AT tires for 20" do exist in the US). 19", 20" or 22" wheels ....? Really not sure the sense of buying an off-road capable vehicle and carrying the extra 800 pounds every day on the street, and not being able to deflate the all terrain tires --- oh well, to each his own. I do remain appreciative the tires are 32", large by JLR standards, that the U.S. prices are attractive versus rest of world, and the vehicle is not a Jeep or a pickup truck. Worth the wait. Thanks again.
@@L663 Not sure either. I will be in California the weekend before the north America dealer training in January to drive the Defender on a purpose built course. . I will ask then. I did notice this week they are not offering the Tan interior here now (which is the one I ordered) -- only black and khaki. I suspect they'be had a run on tan ? I will ask that too.
Respect has to be earned.... lets see if it can earn respect as a credible Defender replacement... I have placed an order for one so we can do just that !
Ok I drove it off road (a little). Went to the 4XFAR (multiple videos are being posted -- google) event in California and drove the P300 4 cyl, same one I have on order. No surprises, which is great news. A bit more capable than the Discovery 4. Seats are comfortable! Everything as promised. A flat torque curve on the Petrol 4. All the Defenders at 4XFAR used street tires, but they had the Goodyear Germany guy on hand to show the 18 inch heavy AT versions I ordered. Nice ! Now just waiting .... to receive it ... and try it in Smoky Mountain Mud.
Have driven and been in both now, I have to agree. The only advantage to the D5 is the adult sized third row (But so few people would need it) -- and a nicer interior (but that is the reason for the RR sport maybe?) . Unfortunately, I think the D5 is soon homeless, once the Ford engine contract runs out and the initial ramp up of the Defender is completed.
The first to be available with the "First Edition" 110 models.. around March April.... then later on the other SE models... its late 2020 for the 90 i think.
Christo Botha how do you know Karlos hasn’t had a Land Rover then please enlighten us with your wisdom, do you know him personally NO shut up 🤐 stupid, did you know that if the Range Rover had bug in its electronics if it pulled up beside another Range Rover, ie car park , stop signs,it would give the other Range Rover the bug , just like humans with a cold etc shows how much you know asshole
@@christobotha5378 Yes, electronics are reliable - just not Land Rover ones though! And, yes, I have had Land Rovers and Range Rovers but it was the unreliable electronics that made me switch to Totota.
That was nice and easy to watch One person talking and one filming Well done George I didn’t feel nauseous watching this. I think Land Rover had to make a change to the much loved Defender, not through choice but through ever stricter legislation. At least this vehicle keeps the name alive. Of course it won’t be to everyone’s taste but given time I’m sure it will prove to be a good seller. Prices could be a bit cheaper but as most sales are PCP these days the total sale price is rarely a consideration, it’s mostly cost per month that people look at now.
Good work again and i am pleased you are ordering. All I can add is to please do consider the 240 SD4 engine as it is so much more effortless compared to the smaller one. Mine is up to 18,000 miles now and is very brisk, hills are eaten without a thought, overtaking can be very impressive and it will still return 40+ mpg. The difference when brand new is not so clear but when run in and using Shell V-Power, it really is something to think about. As for trim...I like “everything” so mine is completely loaded but I would check the HSE out before signing the order form...more money of course though. I really look forward to what you think about it over the coming months...it might be my next car!!!😀😀😀😀
I agree with you about getting the higher spec but my problem is that i get a lot of video requests for upgrading cars... i have a bad habit of buying top spec cars.... and then i cant show the upgrades.... so because i love all you guys ( no gender implied ) out there soooo much i am going to order an S and do some upgrade videos...
powerfulukltd I understand that..start with the radio speakers and that fake chequer plate stuck to the wings! The boot looks a bit of a style idea rather than practicality...it looks rugged but scratchy and a bit cheap. How about an after market towbar job...JLR cost a lot! Happy driving😀😀😀😀
I think the tailgate covering the tail lights is worse for the RHD cars than in the LHD cars. In the UK it’s the light in the centre of the road that is covered whereas in Europe because they drive on the right the light is not covered in the centre of the road. A marketing opportunity for Powerful to bring out an aftermarket rear light repeating kit for the edge of the rear door. Also if you buy one of the S models and start changing the breakers etc would that not invalidate your warranty?
Hi - yes i think i will kiss goodbye to the warranty pretty quickly.....you are correct.... we will brong out a light kit for the rear PDQ... one of the reasons i did order one of these last night was so we can develop parts for them...
Keyless Entry ...?? Given the number of RRs being stolen daily, who the hell wants Keyless? It just generates work for Plod, and Insurance companies ...
Now that JLR have some room to maneuver with the 110, hopefully they will update the Disco to make it competent. Sad to see such a great badge doing so poorly.
What’s people’s hang-up on it having to be a farmer’s car? Farmers ditched the old defender years ago and moved to Isuzu D-Max’s. The old defender was expensive and compromised. I went to one of these launch events - I traveled there in a Defender 300TDI! My father is going to lease a new Defender to replace his Volvo. HE is the target market and he loves it. The armchair new Defender haters were determined to hate it from the start off!
I wonder how they will solve the emergency lights issue. looks like the roof bars with additional LED setup is a must. I was quite sure that for some markets there is a legal obligation to have emergency light visible even with an open boot.
powerfulukltd a cheap radio Mike or a small seperate digital recorder would make a huge difference. Drop me a line if you need a recommendation as I spent 20 years working as a sound engineer.
@@COM70 I did look at this - the cheap radio mics are good but i am worried when i try and merge the video and sound together there will be issues - apparently its really difficult to sync them properly. The wireless mics are a better idea but they are not that easy as i need to add the reciever and a power to my camera... which is the tiny DJI pocket. Really need to find a new gimbal camera with wifi built in for wireless mic
powerfulukltd if when using the seperate recorder you continue to record sound on your camera as a guide track, and use a small visual clapper or even a hand clap for a visual reference it is quite easy to sync the sound based on the wave form. However the biggest mistake people make is to not have both devices running (recording) for the clap or to forget to run the seperate recorder at all. Don’t forget to add an audio take number to add as a rough guide to sync the seperate audio.
great review but your going to need deep pockets or a lotto win to buy and then run one of those. all those electrics, problems waiting to happen. sorry but not for us mortials.
Just another expensive SUV not a replacement for the old style Land Rover If you want to replace your old Land Rover Defender only one vehicle to buy and that is the Toyota 70 series Land Cruiser a work horse the same as the old Land Rover

That all looks very up to date and electronic, but have they built in plenty of water leaks ?
