It's not a review, it's an advertisement. A review should show some pros and cons. This one just all about the good things. Well actually many of the "good thing " are bad for off-roading. E.g. cool fully electronic systems, if some sensors f*ck up or short circuit due to water, or computer glitches, then you are stranded in the middle of no where. Cool cross-link air suspension mean if one is punctured or broken, then you have no suspension at all, also mean stranded. Cool 18" Wheels mean less rubber, prone to have flat tyres, also mean stuck. Cool Small engine with high turbo boost for power mean premature turbo failure. The list goes on...

@@checkmilu oh piss off. All you want to hear is a guy saying "well its good, but WHAT IF...?" Whats the point buddy? You wanna hear how the old dinosaur is better, it isn't. Often as time goes on we create our own versions of the past. Reality is much different... old defenders got stranded plenty, they broke, plenty, and if you wanna buy a later model Defender, yeah, try getting a decent one under 100k, its ain't happening. The new Defender is better off road, and until they all start blowing up, you haven't got even ONE negative argument to rest on past your own nostalgia. Get over it, or come off as a petulant fanboy.

One thing I’m surprised about is the omission of electronic sway bar disconnect. Even Toyota offers that in the 4Runner, Jeep offers it on the Wrangler and Land Rover has their hydraulic anti roll system on certain models.
Also, JLR needs to IMMEDIATELY roll out that infotainment system to all of their vehicles. Poor infotainment systems have been a constant problem for JLR vehicles for over a decade. Even the I-Pace and refreshed XE still suffer from sluggish and stupidly designed menus. Either processing power is lacking or the software itself was poorly written. Whatever it is, this new Defender system seems to solve most of the problems.
My biggest problem with the Defender is the pricing. For a nice 110, you’re looking at close to $90K USD. That’s a lot of money for what is supposed to be an adventure model. I think the four cylinder gasoline engines are going to be hugely disappointing as they don’t even feel potent in Jaguar’s small sedans, let alone a 2.5 ton SUV. The 3.0L I-6 offers decent advertised power, but I wasn’t impressed with the way it felt when I drove a new RRS with that engine. It felt like it had too much lag which is hard to believe since it’s got a 48v electric supercharger that should eliminate any lag. It just never felt like 400HP, or downright potent. My ideal Defender would have the 5.0L naturally aspirated V8 of old or I would accept the supercharged version of said engine. The V8 matches the defender’s purpose the best, offering lots of low end torque and brute force for towing or climbing obstacles or pulling you out of thick gooey mud.

When I first seen it was over half hour i groaned a bit, but when it was over I was wishing it had been longer lol.. I was initially sceptical but this video makes it look more appealing. Certainly the balance between off road capability and driver comfort has been made. My only criticism is the price!! No doubt services and parts will be the sequels to the initial assault on your bank account. Bring the financials in line with mid level prado and you’ll have a winner!

Even if the TR modes fail, you have the car in comfort mode with more ground clearance than a Land Cruiser, at least 800mm wading depth and it's not like any part of the drivetrain will default to "Limphome". If the system fails that's designed to help you, the cars built to get you out of your situation anyway, maybe a chance to demonstrate your "skill" off-road

It’s the same one with some (imo unnecessary) upgrades that’s been on the LR3 and 4 for about 17 years now. It’s the best terrain management out there- adjusts throttle tip in, brake pedal sensitivity, and steering, in addition to the power to the wheels. With the Heavy Duty package I have on mine with the locking rear and center diffs, it is absolutely phenomenal. Anything can break and you’re sol, I’ve seen 25 year old all mechanical jeeps have there lockers fail and then they’re in two wheel drive. I have going on 4 years of on and moderate offroad use on mine with no issues. And the other LRs that I know the TM failing has not been an issue.

@Prakrit Biswas This new Defender would outdrive a GU Patrol off-road easy. Would beat a Wrangler too, but not a Rubicon in the slow-speed technical stuff. Hypothetical question for CarAdvice: if an old Defender 110 had tagged along on this trip, how would it (and driver) have fared? My sense is that it would have done fine on the slow rocky bits, not be completely happy with the higher speed stream crossings, and would have been overwhelmed with the high speed blasts over the flats the new models were doing. Close?

    • @sampurcell589
      @sampurcell589 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It would have done the low speed stuff okay, but would have bottomed out and scraped a bit more. Water and sand would have been fine, provided we aired down more than the new Defenders. Old Defender doesn't ride anyhwere near as well or enjoyable as the new one, and is more fatiguing. It would have done it, but would have been more of an adventure from the hard work and boggings

Three weeks ago, I purchased a Defender 110 X at $105,000 US dollar. I am a loyal Land Rover customer for the past 16 years, this is my third Land Rover. After waiting one year and two months, I purchased the Defender X in-line 6 P400 engine. I am profoundly disappointed with Land Rover that have decided after I spent $100K to purchase 2021 Defender thinking, they were done with V8, they decided to announce that a V8 Defender will be debuting in 2022!!! Land Rover Engaged in Trickery by hiding the news of the V8 in order to sell their first generation Defender and their 2022 because if I and who purchased the in-V6 Defenders would have known, I would have not spend $100k for a V6 but Land Rover being a business, hid the news to get people to buy the 4 and 6 cylinder engine Defender. Now because of this announcement, my 2021 Defender took a hit, it will depreciate tremendously because of the V8 news and I am pissed!!! It is not fair for people like me that were duped into buying this truck only to lost tons of money!!! I’m also a Porsche owner, I own a GT3 RS and Porsche does not do these marketing shenanigans, they allow for high valued the high-end 911 product like mine, keep it at a limited the production at levels like GT3 RS, GT2 RS, 918 Spyder not to impact their customers investments to much. They also give its customers the heads up on their next generation line years before it actually comes out to provide the options to hold on to or sell their investment and upgrade to a newer model if they want to purchase it, especially, when you spending a quarter of a million dollar investment!! They also offer to buy it back at high premium.
I am really upset and disappointed with Land Rover and I wish I didn’t make this purchase, it was a horrible investment in retrospect!!!

If you need to get a wheel in the wilderness, most mechanics out there won’t have 18inch wheels. You’ll be luck to find a 17inch. Also, it’ll depend on how long the sensors last through high vibration and putting the defender through its paces. Once the sensors goes out, you’re pretty much a sitting duck unless you personally have a laptop and the spare sensor part and you could personally program it yourself.

Brett Johnson that’s basically what it is. Don’t forget though that the Disco 1 and 2 had swing rear doors with a tire mounted there. Im thinking of it more as if an LR4 and Disco 1 had a baby. I have an LR4 and personally I prefer the swing door- allows spare to be put on back easier- one of the downsides to LR4 is spare placement underneath- terrible for offroad. And the aftermarket swing arms mean something else to open in order to open the back. And yeah, that price. Man.

This Namibia route was 420 miles, but the car fleet did it 8 times, for 8 different sets of journalists. So +3000 miles, all offroad, on preproduction vehicles. As Sam notes in his writeup, the only casualty was a driver hitting a rock and a couple bogged in mud, no failures.

It's much nicer than I thought it would be... But seriously the price..?.... Most people who can afford a decent spec model will only ever drive young Rupert across the playing field for sports day, so standing in the showroom they will go with a Disco 5 or RR Sport.... This model appeals to a very niche market and to be honest the G Wagon is already in place and this just isn't up for taking that beast on... This could be a nail in the coffin for LR

Unfortunately Land Rover has a lot of skeletons in the closet. I really want to buy the new defender but the Prado is the benchmark in Aus. The new Defender needs to be put through all the most arduous off road trips here in Aus back to back in the same vehicle and if it comes out of that without a glitch, then they’ll have my money and I’ll have their car!

Land Rover, Audi, VW, BMW they all have their fair share of technology problems, that’s true. That’s today’s age - tech is moving forward, it has too. Everyone seems to forget the old days where wind up windows came off their door tracks, every car leaked oil, had crap brakes and needed a can of aerosol down the carby to get it started.
Prado is not without its fault either, depending which way you look at it; the in car tech is old, and outdated, they’ve had 10 years of tuning it to get it right, give LR the same time on road and I’m sure they’ll iron out bugs too. Prado is under powered and has a crappy DPF implementation and engine dust ingress issues, and if you think Prado doesn’t throw the odd fuel pump down the river, you’re wrong. When a 2.8TD on hilux or Prado let’s go, it’s engine swap time, they’re not perfect, nor do they excite anyone, they’re old, and bland.

Why would they even use a 2 litre 4 cylinder diesel in such a vehicle? It will be straining too much with its weight and negate the fuel consumption benefit. The ONLY engine that should have been on here is a 3 litre inline 6 DIESEL which would have had gobs of torque. Wth is this thing doing with an inline 6 petrol and even a 2 litre 4 cylinder diesel?

No matter how good off road capabilities it has , it's just plain stupid to kill an icon that has been around for decades , look at Mercedes with G wagon and Toyota with 70 series both companies have kept their iconic vehicles and made new ones along side, this suv doesn't have the confidence of the previous model or the lader frame or the ride hight, who ever it is that has decided to kill the phenomenal heritage of the brand lacks vision and should be ashamed of him self !
