Most reviewers seem to be missing the point. It looks great (though a little too freelander-like for me) but the owners of the previous defender loved it for 2 reason: Simplicity, low cost of maintenance and repair and extensive modifiability. This on the other hand is yet another Discovery/Range off-shoot in terms of complexity and cost. LR could have made a vehicle to get more of the off-road/wrangler/land cruiser market but this thing will appeal more to the urban set than country folk. It's going to cannibalise the discovery market share.
Find the video of the jaunt across Namibia. The cars went through some pretty tough terrain and never missed a beat. Not one rattle at the end of it. Top Gear, Carfection etc were on it.

How many people will buy it for the off-road riding? Despite the engineering and the new technology embarked in i definitely use this Defender mainly as a SUV than off-road elephant. Brilliant review showing the practicality of this new Defender in City streets and Off-roads. Thank you.
Another great review, can’t wait to see the Defender 90 on the road. Also have to say I wasn’t keen on Rory on Top Gear but really enjoy his reviews now. Much more natural and engaging.

Completely agree, Alexandra. I do think that it seems to have lost the soul of the original; it doesn’t have any resemblance to the old design, but as this is going to be “it”, as you say, ‘will it be reliable’? Superb review that I just watched this evening, 26 March 2022, for the first time. I drove Series Land Rovers from 1964 to 1993. I've been driving Jeeps since April 2012. When I'm ready to buy my next "car," I'll give the new generation Land Rover Defender as objective a test as Rory Read does with his reviews. Thanks for the outstanding job with this, Rory! You just may have provided the review that tips the scale that'll return me to what long had been my favorite automotive marque! Andy McKane, Maunaloa, Hawaii.

Rory is one of the better Car Reviewers right now, his communication is excellent, many other of the current motoring journalists on TH-cam have been relying on those irritating Dad's jokes. Will subscribe now.
The other thing that is brilliant is Rory’s storytelling abilities and oh so positive energies. One other thing….After reviewing this episode, I imagined owning a Defender. Coming from me that says a lot. I hardly even think cars / SUV make sense anymore.
Great review, Rory and the AutoTrader Team! Interesting to see the 240 diesel on the road; we ordered our Defender 110 in February - Lord knows when we can take delivery. Stay home, stay safe everyone
I expect this similarity concern will be addressed by the D5 ceasing at trying to be a part time, capable off-roader, as well as a family hauler (too much compromise !). Instead, it will be be full time, family with young kids, 3 row seat family car. It should soon lose the low range gearbox, air suspension and optional locking rear differential option, as it converts from the V6 Ford engines to ingenium powerplants, targeted at the heart of the family market. We shall see.
Bloody heck, how has AutoTrader got about 10 times better at reviewing cars than the BBC? Oh yes, Rory Reid. This work (I say 'This work' not 'His work' as I have no idea about who does what production-wise) anyway, this work makes Top Gear look like The Teletubbies. Beautifully filmed, authoritative, unbiased and accurate. As my first born said to me last week: 'it takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man'.
I have no doubts whatsoever about what the new Defender can do with the technological upgrades. But it would would have been perfect if LR did that while retaining the original shape of the vehicle and giving some leeway for aftermarket mods.
For the love of god AutoTrader, pay Rory a living wage, maybe then he will be able to afford some new jeans and not go out like a hobo. He is, after all, a motoring journalist, not a down and out. Thanks.

I have seen leaked photos today of 2 models of the Bronco and it reminded me a lot of this Defender, but of course better being body on frame.. There is even a 2 door one as well, it looks awesome.. Best review I have seen ! and I laughed, I love this vehicle! I have AWD on my SUV... I live in LA and people give me "feedback" about why do you have all wheel drive. like dude so have you ever been in a rainstorm where the streets are flooded up to the wheel-wells b/c the infrastructure can't keep up, the crappy streets are worse and the horrible drivers are now improvising but you need to get to your destination... thats why... maybe some day when I grow up I can afford an LR Defender with air suspension
I am with you on the logic. Here in Houston the roads are horrendous and eat suspensions on luxury sedans, especially all around air. My LS460 with optional sport tuned air suspension is shocking on our horrible roads. Some Euro SUVs ride like lumber wagons. I find however that many SUVs do better. Plus, we also have flooding issues. In luxury sedans we are better off with non air setups. It’s crazy.
