What a Beautiful piece, Jim! I Love it! I can't say I care very much for the color of the soap stone on the outside of the bowl. It almost looks like cement, BUT on the inside it looks completely different and is absolutely FLAWLESS! I KNOW I'm 3 years late on this one, but I thought I'd show some love!

I am just watching this video 3 1/2 years later. Very interesting to see the differences between then and now. I didn’t realize soapstone would shine so pretty once it was coated with finish. Very pretty bowl.

Really great bowl!!! I would like to accomplish the finish that you have. I just recently found your channel and must tell you that I can't wait for more. Keep them coming. I love the wood that you have at your disposal. I have 46 acres of woodlands full of hardwood species but it is in Tennessee and I'm now living in Florida. Difficult to go on wood hunting trip but my oldest son is going to help out with that hopefully this winter/fall. The hot melt glue set up was a fantastic idea. Also like the use of an old reefer to act as a drying oven. I'm looking for one to do the same. Thanks for sharing your videos.

The inside seems to have a cat face on it. And on the outside one of the areas you used soapstone on was a shape of a moose moving away. Fun bowl

Sprague Woodturning I’d like to ask u a question if u don’t mind... I love ur work, particularly with the inlays. They add so much texture & color to ur pieces. I notice that all of ur pieces that I’ve seen are really thick & chunky; do u make any finer or slimmer bowls with inlays?
I don’t make thin inlayed bowls because they need the thickness to hold the inlay. The thinner it gets the less functional it becomes. I like people to use my turnings. Functional art.

Nice job I never thought of using soapstone to fill gaps. Thanks for the idea I really appreciate it. Can you use any other stone? The more of your videos I watch the better I like your work and the more stuff I learn and tricks of the trade thank you very much. I’ve been a wood turner for years myself, but you can always learn something.
I’ve inlayed alabaster, different types of soapstone, turquoise, coffee, green calcite and apatite to name a few. It should be 3 or less on the hardness scale. Thanks

Exceptional work as always!! Beautiful bowl!! I have not done much inlay. I usually use the sawdust from sanding the piece to fill the holes and defects. After seeing your work, I plan to do some inlay in the future. I did do some inlay a few years ago using colored sand, Came out really nice. Have you ever done any inlay using colored sand? You can get it on Amazon. Happy Turning!!

I did use it on one occasion but it’s pretty much impossible to sand back when used as a inlay. So I never used it again. Thanks

Структура дерева не сильно плотная. Это видно при обработке. Много заусенцев. Зато получилось просто супер!!!! Класс!!!

Lovely turning. Seems like you can't find a turning video without some heinously colored epoxy resin. Every now and again there's a beautiful peice juxtaposing modern materials and the natural wood. I just find myself bored by always seeing some turqouise or golden ruby goop injected into an otherwise lovely peice of wood. Very nice work!
I agree with you! The resin products have taken over the world, lol. There is certainly a place for them and I will be dabbling in them as well but the natural inlays are what I’ve build my business on. This week I will be uploading a walnut and white alabaster inlay, stay tuned. Thanks for your kind comments.

I've noticed that you put #'s on the bottom of your bowls. Is this the total number of bowl's that you've turned? If so, I am stealing this idea, as I've only just started turning, and haven't done any bowls yet! Love watching a fellow Ontario artist at work!
I use the same inlay technique for stone inlay bentwood rings that I make. Works great!
The first two numbers are the year, and the other four are the sequential number or the number of bowls I’ve made in my professional career. It’s also a great method to track products if their out on consignment, Jim.

It turned out beautiful. Do you think the soapstone would work ok mixed in epoxy? I have some butterfly keys I need to do to stop some cracks in a board and I think the soap stone would look very nice but I need the epoxy for strength...

It might work, I’m not sure that the epoxy is strong enough to over come the forces of wood movement tho. I guess you’ll never know unless you try it. Jim.

Can you share some information about your refrigerator dehumidifier?
I have finally got my hands on a old fridge and will be doing a video soon, stay tuned.
How did you set up your fridge Kiln? Does it take lots of modifications? I'm amazed at all the burl you have and able to find as here in Fl it is difficult and spendy to get. How are you able to use the star bond so freely and yet not stain the nearby wood? Also the general finish is amazing with the way it looks at the end of the video! Thank you so much for helping all of us learn and become better.
Rex B I will be doing a video on making a upright freezer kiln when I can get my hands on a old one, stay tuned. I have lots of info on my Instagram account tho. I’ve been turning for over 20 years and people get to know your looking for burls, so they just seem to show up. It also helps to be surrounded by hardwood forest as well. The CA will certainly stain wood, in this case, I’ve pretty much covered the entire piece which is all end grain, so it all stained the same. Another way around it is to apply a coat of finish first then hit it with the CA glue when the finish cures. Salad Bowl Finish is certainly my number one ☝️

How long do wait after spraying the CA accelerator before you turn again? I’ve found with aerosol accelerators it just cures the surface but not what penetrated into the wood fibers.
That’s correct, if it’s a thick inlay, I usually wait overnight, after that it’s usually not a issue to fill and wait 10 mins or so before tooling it again, Jim

Do you not raise the grain before finishing a bowl you sure do on a slab or is cuase the grain is erratic and end for the most part ,mmmm
Not required with some finishes like this one, Jim.
Do you have to support the banjo on the back of the lathe to prevent tool bounce?
No, not as a general rule, Jim.
