    Thanks for the video. It was helpful in completing the job, however here are some tips to others who may attempt this:
    1.) Removing the radiator will provide much easier access during removal and reinstall
    Without removing the radiator will require you to contort your hands in awkward, tight spaces and may require special tools that the average garage may not have.
    By removing the radiator one would also prevent damage to the condenser during removal/re-installation
    2.) If your car is old enough, the nipple where the return hose connects to radiator cover/neck WILL break. This part can be separately removed without replacing entire radiator and should be available at your local parts store. Easy to remove and reinstall: Remove collar and gently push it backwards toward fire wall (see new part to get idea on how to remove)
    3.) Serpentine belt is best removed by:
    Jacking the vehicle up and remove the passenger side wheel
    Remove the skirt that covers the serpentine belt area (Two 10mm and 1 push pin)
    Use 14mm wrench (the longer the better) or slim socket wrench to pull DOWN and to the FRONT of vehicle on the tensioner bolt
    Remove belt from the left most accessory at the bottom of the pulley
    Then go back up top and remove from alternator
    To reinstall, place belt back on alternator, loosen tensioner, and reattach belt to pulley
    4.) Alternator bolt removal:
    a.) Remove upper bolt of alternator from the top of vehicle (14mm)
    b.) LOOSEN the lower/left bolt using a breaker bar w/14 mm socket or wrench with extension.
    **Chances are you will not be able to remove the entire bolt from the top using a wrench/socket combination because of the limited space
    c.) Continue to remove the lower/left bolt (14mm) from the bottom of the vehicle
    You may have to lay on your back and reach up with left hand to remove the remainder of the bolt.
    d.) Third, lower/right bolt (12mm) removal:
    --Remove dipstick (10mm)
    --Remove exhaust manifold heat shield (no need to remove O2 sensor)
    --Use short extension and wrench to remove the bolt
    ****This bolt will FALL into the bowels of the car!! Have a magnetic pickup tool ready
    Hopefully you have already removed the under skirting, for this is the only way to retrieve it
    During reinstall I dropped it at least 10 TIMES!!! Each time it fell in the same exact spot!! ***
    5.) If you DID NOT remove radiator, place a piece of cardboard or board in front of radiator to protect the condenser as you remove/reinstall alternator (this will however give you less space to remove alternator)
    --If you skip this step wear some light duty gloves while removing alternator and use the back of your hand to position between condenser during removal/installation.
    ***The Third Bolt Re-installation**
    DO NOT tighten the other two bolts, this will allow some wiggle room to install the 12mm bolt while the alternator is in close alignment because of the other 2 bolts... I made the mistake of tightening the lower 14mm bolt and caught hell trying to get the 12mm installed... It is only AFTER I loosened the other 2 14mm bolts was I able to successfully install the 12mm on the 1st!! try!!
    Good luck!!

    FYI for anyone contemplating the job and researching on TH-cam - there is absolutely no need to remove the radiator fans assembly in order to remove the alternator. You undo the water inlet hose and remove the thermostat housing (two 10mm nuts + the 14mm idler pulley bolt) and remove the three screws holding the ABS brake unit to the chassis which then allows enough room to manoeuvre the alternator out.
    If you are not intending to replace the serpentine belt, you can get away without removing the front wheel and access panel (just work on the idler/tensioner from overhead).
    The only mildly tricky thing is removal of the rear alternator bolt because you can't see what's there. The alternator is bolted to the block with a bracket (google part number 125110P010 for a picture). Use a deep 12mm socket to remove the bracket from the block and you can then free the alternator enough to access the other bolt and remove the bracket from the alternator.

    Great video but some tips for others as I just did this job myself- took about 6 hours. 2009 RX 350 with 172K miles, it started having real issues two weeks, light came on a few days ago,, but it was noisy for the last few thousand miles. Tough job for guys with larger hands as you'll have less maneuvering space but it's doable.
    1. You'll probably break the bolts for the cover underneath, rusted to hell on mine. Air intake bolts might break off too, one of mine did. Exhaust manifold bolts might be rusted to hell, spray some pb blaster in case.
    2. If you break the engine coolant filler neck accidently, Dorman sells the part, #902-408. Good to have in hand and return if not needed. If you do need it, break off the plastic retainer clip, use some wrench/locking plier to get a grip on it, and wiggle it off while using something to pry it off. Careful getting the broken plastic pieces inside the hose out- face it downwards and hope for the best. New one should go back right in with some suggestive tapping.
    3. When it comes to the third bolt in the back, you don't actually have to remove initially to get the alternator off- you can just go straight in following the compressor line and the bolt for the bracket mounting to the engine block is right there, 12mm. You will have to take the exhaust manifold off first, don't need to touch the dipstick. You can wiggle the alternator out after taking that bolt out then actually remove the bolt connecting the bracket to the alternator out after. There is a line/wire connected to this bracket so you will have to take it off.
    4. When it comes to wiggling the alternator out, I found it extremely helpful to pry the top, knock it back in with a wrench (anything's a hammer), then pry again and repeat and it will eventually loosen itself. You will have to pull it up from the bottom and start to maneuver it out that way. I believe my alternator pulley was facing downwards/towards the inside of the car for me to get it out. Replacing with another unit was extremely easy as it almost slipped right in. If you un did the bracket, finagle the bolt onto the alternator first but do not tighten all the way. When you get the alternator lined up for install, put in the top bolt, bottom left bolt, then bolt it into the engine. Tighten all the bolts down at this point
    5. I found removing/replacing the belt is easiest with two people even if you do put a bolt in to hold it un tensioned. Getting it back on is extremely tough for your last pulley without having it un tensioned fully. Use two wrenches/breaker bar to get it loose. Then putting it back on have someone help or you may never finagle enough clearance to get the belt back on right.
    6. Under air intake tube was annoying since you can't see that far back, until you realize it has to pivot off the clear res underneath. Use that as a pivot point and eventually you should get it to fit back into the air intake box easily.
    7. I had new pulleys on hand but when it started getting late and I spun all the pulleys and didn't feel any resistance/grinding or hear any noise, I decided to just leave them there. Yes I should have gotten them replaced since I was there but it's a simple enough job that I can do it another time when I really have some issues. They're going back to amazon in the meantime.

    Excellent video sir! Bravo for taking the time to do this.
    Only thing I would mention is that when you were commenting on the electrical connections at the alternator, you refer to the main cable as a “ground” cable... it’s NOT a ground, it’s the main battery charge cable! This is a critical difference and could cause someone some serious damage if they do not understand this. That being said, if they follow your recommendation to disconnect the ground cable ahead of time, it will be safe anyhow.
    Thank you again for the excellent quality video!

    • @davebirch6197
      @davebirch6197 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You must remove the lower wheel arch cover (2 x 10mm) to remove/replace the serpentine belt. Also removing the tensioner pulley and then its bolt makes for easier lower alt. bolt removal/replacement.

    Very helpful for my first Alternator replacement (310,000 Kms). The 12mm lower inside bolt was the most difficult to get out. There is a 10mm nut on that bracket that would make it much easier to get out. The bracket stays with the alternator on removal.

      U@@LifeTac I also found that removing the belt tensioner bolt (LH thread) made the lower alternator bolt very easy to remove/install. After fitting the new alternator, replace the tensioner, pulley and slip a 6mm drill into the loading hole of the tensioner and have it fully loaded before installing the belt. Took 3 minutes to load the belt. Would attach some photos if knew how. Lexus wanted AU$860 for a new Alt. but found one new for AU$270.

    Thanks for this video. I was able to successfully replace my alternator using this video. There are two important things missing in this video.
    1. How to remove the belt from the alternator
    2. How to remove the alternator itself
    To remove the alternator belt, it’s easiest to simply remove the front right passenger wheel and the plastic wheel well cover which will give you access to the belt pulley. You can use a long wrench and shift the pulley to loosen and remount the belt. It’s easy this way. The pulley does not need to be removed. You can see a video of the pulley here:
    th-cam.com/video/zRfvf7-EcAw/w-d-xo.html
    To remove the alternator itself, remove the top bolt which is visible from the top of the car then remove the bottom left bolt which is clearly visible from the passenger wheel well which you access to remove the alternator belt. The hard part is getting out the screw on the right side of the alternator. To remove that screw, you first have to remove the bracket screw that’s attached to the alternator screw on the right. A picture of that screw can be found at :31 of the video below. Do not follow the rest of the video below which shows to remove the pulley itself. That’s not needed! Once you remove the screw in the picture below, you can then remove the 3rd alternator screw on the right side.
    th-cam.com/video/IAgFfeWbaMQ/w-d-xo.html
    Good luck! This was my first time doing this and it took me almost 6 hours to do it. 4 to remove the alternator and 2 to install the new one and put everything back together.

    Also, for both number two, the bottom alternator bolt at the side of the serpentine belt, take a little extra time and get the air conditioning line out of your way, and the ABS pump, especially it's bracket loosened up will give you more wiggle room
    And, it's no fun, but will save you a lot of trouble to just remove the radiator hose from the water pump.

  • @thardyryll
    @thardyryll 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Not all RX350s from this era have that third bolt and bracket assembly - my 2008 does not - so even if it is present it likely is possible to leave it off. I used the method shown on another video to zip tie a serpentine belt tool to the motor mount to keep tension off the tensioner. The factory manual specifies removal of the radiator fan assembly. I would hate to attempt removal of the alternator with the fans in place.

    Two bolts hold it in and the third one at the bottom is a nut. I didn't need to remove dipstick or us swivel. Extension alone was good. I also found that doing the bottom bolt it was better to do from in the front wheel area. Wheel and panel off to take belt off anyway. Putting alt back in I found that the first mount to line up was the stud down by the dipstick. Fell into place so to speak after that. Taking apart took just about 3 hours. Replacing took 1.5 hours. Sippin beers while doing it. Good overall vid thou.

      No need... The bottom bolt attaches to a 90° bracket which goes straight into the engine block. A 12 mm straight on will take it off and save you a hell of a lot of trouble.

    First, thanks for the video! You made all the difference. I tried to do the same with this one on that car's transmission filter: th-cam.com/video/92pc9fCvK4c/w-d-xo.html
    Here are some lessons learned:
    - Buy and install a new serpentine belt. It’s time and you’ll save $100 in labor.
    - Buy and install a new radiator filler neck. On the earlier RX350s, they’re notorious for breaking off at the bottom hose and, potentially, destroying the engine for lack of cooling.
    - Gather cardboard to protect the radiator, a headlamp, a 2” nail, serpentine belt installation diagram and a magnetic grabber.
    - Take photos of everything before you take it apart.
    - You don’t need to loosen the dipstick but you do need to shift the exhaust manifold shield out of the way.
    - Cover the radiator fins with cardboard after removing the fan.
    - My hand won’t fit between the alternator and hoses from the top. That’s why getting to the bottom bolt from below proved to be so important. Same for the belt tensioner.
    - Remove the passenger wheel and the cover over the belt. Find the belt tensioner at 2 o'clock from the big crankshaft pulley at the bottom of the engine. See the hole at the end of the tensioner arm? When you twist the tensioner to the left with a 14mm wrench on the nut, you’ll be able to pin it out of the way with the nail slipped through that hole and into the slot you see in the engine block. Remove the belt. That will expose the bottom alternator bolt and prep for the new belt.
    - The light gray electrical connector you need to disconnect below the alternator has a locking clip hidden at the bottom. Remove it from below.
    - The driver-side bracket on the alternator is tough. First, remove the nut holding it onto the engine. Pull the alternator off that bracket’s bolt, twist the alternator to expose the bolt holding the bracket to the alternator, and remove the bracket. That makes removing the alternator much easier. To install, put the new alternator in about that same place, then attach the bracket to the alternator, then finally fix the bracket to the engine.
    Thanks again!

    • @hedga001
      @hedga001 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      vincent milano You don’t need to remove the AC compressor to remove that bolt. You unbolt the bolt strait next to the hidden one on the same bracket. Then you unbolt the hidden bolt once you get the alternator out and bolt the bracket to the new alternator.

    9:57 - T the bottom bolt attaches to a 90° bracket which goes straight into the engine block. A 12 mm bolt goes into the engine block straight on.
    Don't mess with that really hard to reach both on the alternator. You will save a lot of time and angst by just going and looking at the bracket. Then just undo that bolt . There is no need for any swivel fitting for your ratchet.

    • @OQureshii
      @OQureshii 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LifeTac I consider myself very mechanically inclined but jeez on this rx350 everything was packed to tight. I could only do it by removing the front passenger tire. The new alternator I got was 0.5 cm too small to fit for the front bolt. That and it's -10 outside right now did not make this fun. Thanks for the video!

    • @antonioprado8068
      @antonioprado8068 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LifeTac I can admit it's a very tight job but once I figured all the right angles and saw that removing the passenger tire was easier. Going in was a total breeze. While I'll never have to work on this car again if I did it would be a breeze knowing all the bolts and angles. Only hard for a person who never touched it but a mechanic will do this at a breeze. Took me around 4-5 hrs but that's also including watching TH-cam videos and waiting for a second hand to come

      Jacques Koorts I did and it wasn’t as bad as bad as you might think because I didn’t even have to use a u joint. You unbolt the bolt strait next to the hidden one on the same bracket with a deep 12mm socket, 3/8 preferably. Then you unbolt the hidden bolt once you get the alternator out and bolt the bracket to the new alternator with that hidden bolt. Then once you manage to get the alternator in it’s spot, like the bracket hole into the stud with the 2 alternator fasteners.
