This is hard to say because I know the financial ramifications of what I'm saying, but I think that Sony 50mm is by far your best option after seeing this...and knowing how particular you are. It looks SO GOOD and I didn't see it miss unlike the other options. I think it's a buy once, cry once type of thing. Then again, you've looked at the footage with that lens a lot more than I have so if it's not as good as it looked here, go with your gut. But man, it looked the best today. I thought it was interesting just how horrible the metabones/Canon combo was. That can't be the intention metabones had when they released that software update, is it?
Peter, just try your Canons on the MC-11, it's not just for Sigma lenses. I tried it one week ago and was very surprised, how well the MC-11 was working. :)
Benjamin Jehne. good idea. It would be interesting to see if the bad focusig is canon lenses problem or is it a problem with metabones. Thanks Peter Nice job !
Hi Peter, great video as always. Was Metabones adapter in Green mode or Advanced mode (Red LED on) ? I found my Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS II L lens working for video pretty good with Metabones in Advanced mode (but Not on Green mode).
Hi Alex. The Metabones needs to be in Advanced mode to work. So yes, it is in Advanced mode. Works good for still images, but obviously not for videos. The Sigma does both. Canon lenses on the Sigma adapter I found will not do video - but WILL do still pictures. Today I am making tests to see if it is good for using with manual focus in video (I haven't done it yet).
I updated the firmware in both the Metabones V and the Sony a7 iii two days ago (May 27, 2019). Now my Canon 100-400mm L is working in non-advanced mode (with the blue light on the adapter) flawlessly on the a7 iii. AF is now fast and accurate. Before the update, it was impossible to use. I am thrilled
Hey peter and subscribers. Ive noticed most review videos for the MC-11 vs Metabones focus on the auto focus capability. If your not interested in auto focus, is a there a difference in quality. Im oldschool and still like seting up shots and taping focus points. which one is great for a cinematic setup?
Hi Peter, thanks for all your great videos, something warm and wonderful happens when I watch them :) I am shooting on a canon apsc and am trying to get a full body video shot with bokeh . When using a 50mm at 1.8 I have to be so far away that almost everything is in focus. Do you have any suggestions of what lens combination would work? Thanks so much!
Hi Photo. In my opinion (got to be careful on that one lol) the MC-11 is better for photos and stills for both Sigma and Canon lenses. For still pictures both brands of lenses work really good. For video, the Sigma brand works very well (as you saw). I bought the Sigma MC-11 myself and sent the Metabones back. I intend on using my favorite lens (the Canon 50L) for stills on the A7-3 with total auto focus on, and if I want to use it in video I will turn it to manual focus.
Love your videos and I like your occasional mentions of your faith. I'm a retired minister and hospice chaplain. I can only afford a sony a6500, but you work with what you can afford. I have the FE 85 1.8 and love it. Also an FE 50 1.8. Have the 18-35 Sigma 1.8 with MC11 adapter and an 18-135 for travel. I have a few vintage lenses as well. So I'm not even in the minor leagues, I'm in the sandlot. lol. However, am learning photography and love it. Have written a couple of Christian books, one related more for hospice. I also appreciate so much your involvement with your parents while they were alive. My Dad passed away in 2013 at our house. I was his hospice chaplain, so that part worked out pretty good. Wish I could afford a full frame camera, but my budget just won't allow it. But God has blessed me with many wonderful friends. I count you among them. Also keeping you in my prayers. Continue to be a messenger of peace and good will, hope and love. My wife knows nothing about cameras, but she just enjoys watching your videos because of your warmness, honesty and personality. I'm almost 68 now but am never too old to learn photography..
Hi Don :) Thanks for you super nice comment! We were talking around the table the other night and my brother said to one of his kids that if they cracked his head open computer games would come pouring out lol. That turned into a game for each one to comment on another what would come out if they cracked open their head - kids. When they got to me I got the neatest compliment - they said if they cracked my head open Jesus would come out ha ha. I thought that as an amazing compliment! He is inside me and I can't help it he is just a part of my normal every day "speak". Not ashamed of it, people can either take me as I am or leave me :) I also talk to much hehe, people will say to make my videos shorter. I tried to do that, and you can see how well that worked out ha ha. I consider my videos as a form of friendship time with my subscribers and the main topic revolves around cameras - rather than my video being about specs and technicals stuff. Yes, I have been a photographer for over 40 years and can run circles around most of the young ones out there - but I find most people prefer having a "friend" on their screen for a while than an encyclopedia. Good thing is I am more built do talk that way anyway, so it is a good fit. Age is part of the curse, not part of the Blessing. I used to think of God the Father as this wise old man that everyone goes to for their wants and needs. But people don't grow old in Heaven - and the Father is not an old man :) He is a young strong guy! I said that to counter your comment about learning something something at 68. You can! You have an eternity to do it! The body will go to sleep, but as Jesus said - "He who believes in Me will never die - Do You Believe This?!" My answer is YES :) Don, just enjoy what God puts in your hands. The A6500, besides it's few problems, is one of the more advanced machines on the market, almost ahead of it's time! On the other hand, it is hard to actually find a "bad" camera in today's market. Address your emphasis on photography or videos rather than being a "camera hunter". May people are professional "camera hunters" and rarely take but a few pictures or make very few videos. And even if you ARE a camera hunter, God will still fulfill the desires of your heart :) You aren't handicapped with the A6500! It is often mentioned as the main camera or the main back-up, and the reason is it can do it! So enjoy it. God has you in the advanced group :) Regards - Peter
That was so kind. We have Jesus in common my brother! If you ever get ebooks, you can find my books on Amazon. One in particular, Grief's Untold Stories. If you prefer the paperback, I would love to send you a free copy, it might or may not bless you (I realize that you might not want to give your address and that is certainly understandable, especially in this day and time). The book was spawned by my experiences as a hospice chaplain and minister dealing with folks who are at death's door. But it is a very positive book with many true stories of folks who faced death courageously. I thought the "crack you head open" game was so funny. I'm afraid if my head were cracked opened, there would be Biblical passages flowing about as well as camera lenses, and some anxiety (which often shows a weakness of faith), but I freely admit that! I'm too old to to not be honest. lol. The reason you have such devoted followers is not because of your photography expertise (which is profoundly extensive, beyond question), but rather because of your amazing personality. If I can say this freely. I see Jesus in you! I'm in California and you're on the opposite coast, but I look forward to meeting you one day in person. I realize that it may not be here, but there are a lot of years in the next phase of life. It will be fun to catch up, stop by a nearby heavenly cafe and chat. I wonder if they'll have cameras in heaven? lol. If there will be cameras in heaven, I wager you will have found the perfect camera! I suspect that we'll have a lot of amazing adventures and discoveries ahead.
Hi Peter! Sorry I didn't get back to you yet, my plate is pretty full these last few days :) The Santa on the left and the Grandfathers clock on the right is the boundaries so I know where to aim the camera. After that, it becomes an up and down thing and I do exactly what you said, run a few seconds of video, check it, and adjust to raise or lower the camera so my head top, and the desk is in the frame. That is a pretty easy one though. I also know where to stand pretty much. That is the advantage of a static studio setting. A new setting would be different and the wifi would definitely be helpful. But I still can set the boundaries without me in the shot and then just fine tune where I will be. In the days before articulating screens and vlogging, I would hand hold the camera and pretend there was a light beam coming out of the lens and aim the center of the lens at my nose. It worked surprisingly well :)
Main main difference - you can tap the LCD screen to track with the Panasonic and Canon. With the Sony you cannot. With the Sony it is either all automated, or you can define an area (like a box) and your job is to keep the box on the item while watching the viewfinder or LCD screen you are tracking. Two complete opposite methods. I definitely like the Canon and Panasonic way better, but the Sony way works too after some forced practice time. After that, the image quality of the lens compression and the video is excellent. And the GH5 has 4K 60p, and the Sony does not.
Mainly the AF and DOF are what intrigue me to the A7iii. I mostly shoot myself as you do. Although I'll be doing some live streaming with it and some more dynamic videos of myself illustrating exercises, where the AF could come in handy.
Here is where a lot of folks get confused with DOF. I mean that respectfully, because i don't know what you know and what you don't know :) DOF has 2 aspects to it. Most people are looking for a blurred background - and this is true. But what gives it the magic is not only that the background is blurred, but the lens compression. Look at a section of this video where the Canon 50mm 1.8 is actually in focus. Compare that picture (pause it) with the Sigma 24mm on the Sigma MC-11. The Sigma focuses well, but the 50mm one is magical. That is because the 50mm has a totally different compression than a 24mm lens will. The 24mm sample in this video is using the "cropped mode" or as they call it the Super 35mm mode. Totally puts the camera in GH5 territory where the full frame stands it apart. This is the problem with the m4/3 system, its strength is also its weakness. A 25mm 1.2 lens will never have the compression of a 50mm 1.8 lens on a m4/3 camera. I am really pushing beyond the techical limits with the 4/3 system asking it to do something beyond its ability. The Sony is a better camera than I expected, but it still does not come close to a Panasonic or Canon body. The A7-3 gives something not formerly available at a unique price point. A full frame camera at $2K. The closes thing to it is the 1DX Mark II - and that one is a 1.35 crop, still away from the full frame. Better, but not there all the way.
I don't remember the number. I know I went to the web site and uploaded what the newest firmware was for both of them. That is just an automatic thing to do with any equipment I get, even the TV set. As for the number, I really can't remember it and they are updating firmwares as newer stuff comes out on a pretty regular basis.
Great video Peter! Between my Phantom 4 Pro and GH5 I am delivering 4k content to my clients. Funny enough I have been shooting with the 6D for the past 5 years and my business continues to expand and my clients don't see a difference. Do understand I shoot architecture and rely on manual focus only. It makes it hard to switch to a Sony, which is reasonable in price with all the bells and whistles when I don't have to spend more and I continue to make money. You know the phrase, "if it's not broke, why fix it?". Two things to consider. Most people watch youtube on their cell phone and can't tell the difference between 4k and 1080. Peter McKinnon is a great example of using a lot of 1080p content over 4k for the sake of getting content out quicker and his quality is amazing. The other thing to consider is NAB is next month ;) More toys may be coming out. I'll wait to see what's on the horizon before I make another move. Keep up the good work!
Hi Peter, Loved the video. At the end were you started to rant on the $5,000 Canon camera. Thats how I feel also about the Art 1.4 lens prices. But you gave a great response to it. That's the look the brides wants in a photo.
Peter I love your videos you truly have your heart into it. I've been a Nikon user all my life and I'm 70 now. Nobody talks about adapters for Nikon G series lenses for the new Sony "A" series. Is there any discussion in the rumor mill that you know of that there's an adapter that I can use. Thank you, Rich
Loved the "Έλα! Έλα εδώ!" part. I didn't know you have any relationship with Greece!!! Anyways, I love your videos. Great job!!! PS. I am a happy owner of Sony A7III, and it's video auto focus is excellent even with the kit lens! I am waiting for the Sigma line to see how it does with auto focus!... Cheers!!! :)
Wow, great video! So glad I sold all my Canon glass and bought all new Sony glass. I love the look of that Sigma 1.4, might have to look at some Art lenses when they are released.
All Cars United I sold everything and got the a7r3 with the 28 f2, 55 f1.8, and 85 f1.8. I haven’t got the 70-200 f2.8 yet. Selling my canon 70-200 2.8 was the only one I really miss.
Hey Peter- Bear in mind the A7III has the same AF system as the A9. The A7RIII AF is different, so--fingers crossed--maybe Canon glass will do better with the MC-11 on the new camera! What do you think?
Hi Fox :) I am hoping the same thing you are hoping. In fact, I have an A9 coming here which I think the A7-3 will behave similar to. The A7 will not have the super charged stuff, but the same focus system and similar sensor. I don't have the Metabones here anymore, but I did buy the Sigma MC-11. That adapter will allow manual focus for all my Canon glass while I get my bearings on the new A7-3. I will buy at least one Sony lens for use in the Christmas Room - it will be one of the 50's or the 55mm. Haven't made up my mind yet. For pictures, the MC-11 allows me to use almost all of my Canon glass, including the 50L, insanely quick, so no problem there. I have lots of Canon glass. Video is the bugger lol.
I hear you about video! That seems to be the issue. Can't wait to see the results with the A9! After much research, I gave up on Metabones as well. My MC-11 adapter will arrive with my camera body after April 10. Also, interested but not super optimistic to see how my Tamron 24-70 works with the adapter. It would be amazing to have 5+5 stops of stabilization!
The 1.4 looks amazing; close to be being 3D; it is not just keeping up with the focus. IQ is far superior of all else you tried. If you can afford it go for it; I would.
I am in the process of selling all my L glass. First one sold. I really can't believe that I am switching to Sony. I never thought Canon would stop caring about their customers. I have called Canon over 20 times and tried to email R&D. NO call back. Then Canon brings out with an M50 with cropped sensor. Instant loss of customers. Why= They want me to spend 7K on the C200 Canon is on it's way down.
TBH, they stopped caring about their customers circa 2011. But with decades of goodwill built up, it took people several years, and many flagrant examples of intentionally crippled (and outdated) cameras for them to actually accept it. I respect every brand in marketplace right now: Panasonic, Fuji, Nikon, Olympus, etc. Every one but Canon. SMH
I'm only keeping some of the Ls I love- 100 macro, 70-200 2.8 IS II etc. Also keeping my T7I. The dual pixel for video is still top notch. I do very little video but when I need it I love it. For stills i'm all Sony or Fuji
Only Sony lenses... you dont have to buy the expensive 50mm 1.4, you can buy the zeis 55mm 1.8 or the cheaper 50mm 1.8 ! Perfect lenses , less expensive. OR you can wait for a while to buy the newer sigma native FE lenses.
I been seriously thinking to get a7 iii instead of 5d iv but after playing a bit with the camera at photography show in Birmingham last Saturday I’m not so convinced anymore, first of all evf I see some benefits but the resolution is to low in my opinion and some flickering while looking at heavily backlight scene wasn’t pleasant, when compared to a7riii or a9 evf there is huge difference so from now on if I decide to go Sony it will be a7riii even that I don’t need so much resolution but just for the evf and higher quality lcd screen. Second thing which worry me a bit are the colours I couldn’t inspect them on big screen but looking on camera lcd skin colours of some people I took picture of looks ... I don’t know how to describe but worst then on canon :( what are your observations about that ?
I have the A7lll on order but Your conclusions are my fears. I wished I would have had one to play with before I ordered. In my case I may of just continued to live with the GH5.
Sonny Eymann hi. Don’t take me wrong I still think is not a bad camera especially for the price but I just like canon colours and don’t really want to spend hours to make Sony files looks same, on top of that the evf really puts me off when compared to a7riii which was much nicer, but again I’m use to 4K high quality screens so maybe for you that wouldn’t be a issue. So now I just need to decide 5d iv for colours out of the camera and ergonomics but is huge or a7riii for features, small size but more work in post and poor ergonomics...
Hi. I went from a 5d mark 4 to a 7r 3. It's not the colour science. I used to think that I was doomed and would be returning the a7r3. Found out that if you use capture one for sony for processing your raw images you get AMAZING colors. TH-cam it. It really makes the difference.
I shoot Nikon for work and have used everything from Samsung to Fuji, I still prefer Canons colours hands down. I find their white balance nails it as well far more accurately than most others.
Sigma was better than the canon but nothing equal to the Sony combination. As I told you I have the A7 lll on order and I dusted off the A7ll that I have owned for 2 years. The Sony 28mm f2 is not expensive and works well on my older Sony. also the Sony 85mm f1.8 is very sharp and not expensive. If stills are your goal than the 80D does very well? The Sony is only a step until someone builds a 4K 60P low light camera that focuses. My GH5 is close. Maybe the GH6 will give me 1 stop better low light and a phase detect autofocus that works. I will be happy as the IBIS and the touch flip screen is a joy on the GH5, Full frame may be the current rage but not necessary if the GH5 worked better! I am already tired of the weight of the Sony and the Heavy lens lugging around
Hi Maxim. I don't have that lens and I don't think I can get one. I did have to update the firmware on the MC-11 to get anything to work though. You can check that out too and see if it helps. If anyone here has used the 20mm Sigma lens, please chime in!
Hey there- I just checked and it's a select few lenses. My EF85mm ART was a no-go. Have to wait for the E-mount lenses and use the MC-11 in the meantime. Check with the dealer who sold you the lens to see if it's eligible for the conversion.
Do you thinq the A7 iii will perform better or equal? technically is it the same AF system/algorytm between the A7R iii and the A7 iii ?
Peter, Great and very informative video! What lapel mic are you using for the audio? Sound quality is great!
Hi, thank you! On each individual video the equipment I actually use is usually in the box down below the video :)
@@PeterGregg Thank you!
Hello. I have sony a6400 camera. Which adaptore works very well with tokina 10-17 lens? Mc11 or metabones v? Thank you so much for advise.

Does the mc-11 have video AF with canon lenses now? I sold mine about 3 months ago and back then video AF only worked with canon lenses
Fred GUERIN metabones 5 actua does slightly better that the Mc 11. You will always be limited with adapted glass compared to sony glass unfortunately.
Delightful. I can watch your videos for hours! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, expertise and experience.
What are the results with Nikon lenses?
Hi Peter, great video as always. Was Metabones adapter in Green mode or Advanced mode (Red LED on) ? I found my Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS II L lens working for video pretty good with Metabones in Advanced mode (but Not on Green mode).

Nice to hear that!!! :) :)

Better, but not there all the way.
wow the meta bones adapters suck major blur during focus
Peter, the firmware version used in the metabones was at V0.58?
I don't remember the number. I know I went to the web site and uploaded what the newest firmware was for both of them. That is just an automatic thing to do with any equipment I get, even the TV set. As for the number, I really can't remember it and they are updating firmwares as newer stuff comes out on a pretty regular basis.
Ok. tksss :)
1dxmk2 1,3x crop?
Sensor size of the Canon is 35,9 × 23,9 mm CMOS
They ditched the 1,3x crop after the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV
Arvutimaailm There’s a 1.35x crop when shooting 4k video on the 1DX Mark II. The sensor itself is full frame 35mm, but in 4k there’s a crop.
Cheers!!! :)
Wow. State of art photograph technology with experienced photographer. I want to be like you!
Wow, great video! So glad I sold all my Canon glass and bought all new Sony glass. I love the look of that Sigma 1.4, might have to look at some Art lenses when they are released.
James Ryan I've been avoiding the inevitable which selling anything canon glass for my a7r3.
All Cars United I sold everything and got the a7r3 with the 28 f2, 55 f1.8, and 85 f1.8. I haven’t got the 70-200 f2.8 yet. Selling my canon 70-200 2.8 was the only one I really miss.
Art lenses are great. Love Sigmas
You just sold me a wide open Lens, the look of your video is absolute convincing :-)
Sigma is really doing a good job on the Sony bodies ...
The smooth focusing of the Sony combo looks very professional. Thanks for video showing
These examples.
Why= They want me to spend 7K on the C200
Canon is on it's way down.
OR you can wait for a while to buy the newer sigma native FE lenses.
...The 50mm F1.8 FE is way to slow for video, even at the A7RIII.
I have the 55mm 1.8 and it is the best lens I every owned.
Peter is the best . Keep up the videos
I am already tired of the weight of the Sony and the Heavy lens lugging around
you look younger with hair cut. ...i could not get any adaptor to work w sigma 20mm f1.8...test w that.
Hi Maxim. I don't have that lens and I don't think I can get one. I did have to update the firmware on the MC-11 to get anything to work though. You can check that out too and see if it helps. If anyone here has used the 20mm Sigma lens, please chime in!
You are a Pro !!!!
Superb review and comedy
You can now convert sigma art lens from canon/nikon mount to Sony E mount from their customer care!
Hey there- I just checked and it's a select few lenses. My EF85mm ART was a no-go. Have to wait for the E-mount lenses and use the MC-11 in the meantime. Check with the dealer who sold you the lens to see if it's eligible for the conversion.
foxtowerphotography That’s interesting. I would’ve thought their most recent Art lenses would be the most likely to convert without problems.
Γεια σου Peter! :)
Yassou' :)
Just buy the Sony/Zeiss 55mm and be happy.
So...Either you, or Jingles, or both...are Greek? 😋
