    Well done video that basically mirrors my experiences thus far. What I find most encouraging is how much better adapted lenses work on the a7R3 vs the a7R2 (and even the a6500). That tells me a lot of the improvements come down to advances in Sony's focus system.

      @Dragonblaster1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dustin Abbott I agree. I have both the A7S2 and R2 and I have no trouble using legacy APS glass on the R2, since it has sensor pixels to burn. But I only use FF with the S2.

    Thank you for putting the truth on the table. The tests I've done on the a9 arrived at very similar to the results with both the Metabones and Commlite adapter shown in this video. You've nailed it Chris!

      @josephmolloy4549 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      moo yeah I've considered it but I don't need that many mega pixels. I'm shooting the d610 at the moment. Hoping for a d760 or d650 with d850s autofocus system but I've been waiting a while now. This Sony is very tempting.

      Joseph Molloy I’m also moving from Nikon. I’m still trying to decide what I want to do.. I may go for the Nikon adapter (not too worried about performance. Anything is going to be better than my current body). But yeah it’s a shame that Sony glass is so pricey. I’m think I may just start a set of Sigmas

    Sony adapters to crop bodies do also work extremely well with the A6300 and A6500. I'd honestly say that aside from an A7II at those crazy prices these days, the A6300+Metabones+Canon combo is the best balance between quality glass/consistent performance and cheap prices for a mirrorless system today.

    I've decided to give you my business for the last two lenses I bought simply because of the effort you put on these videos. It would be easier to buy locally but I think we need to reward what you've been doing and I appreciate that you are open to test different things.
    I also need to mention that I've had top grade service with my problematic pentax d fa 70-200mm lens I had to return. I was offered a shipping refund for a doa lens focusing system and I didn't even had to ask for it. Obviously my next purchase was placed to you. The online assistance we receive when purchasing and also for the support is fantastic.
    Keep coming the video and I will make sure to send you my business.
    A++++++ would buy again :)

    I hope you guys will keep up with this, and keep us up to date. As a Nikon shooter with both a crop (D7100) and full-frame body (D810) I see two VERY important options that a great adapter would provide... especially for the Sony system. First, of course, some people could switch to Sony bodies, without the fear of costing a fortune in new glass. But just as important, for me... I'd consider trading in my crop sensor camera for a Sony A7 III, for example, while keeping my D810. Then I'd have a real opportunity to test Sony, and be more sure about it, before jumping ship entirely. I've been waiting, the same as many others, for Nikon to come out with their full-frame mirrorless system, but it's still not clear when this might happen. Thanks for all the work, guys!

    • @huiedinwiddie7294
      @huiedinwiddie7294 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is my exact same situation. I have a D7100 and a D800. I have rented (3) separate Sony bodies (A6400, A7II and A7Riii) along with Nikon Z6 (hated it's low light capability); however, I LOVE the functions of the A7RIII and plan on purchasing it...however...I have both Nikon and most exclusively now, Tamron G2 lens (85 1.8, 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 Gen 2). LOTS of $$ invested in lens. I will keep my D800-regardless!! Now, I wish to keep and use all the functions of my Tamron lens for my Nikon on the Sony A7RIII body. Just need a good/reliable adapter that will adjust aperture, shutter, ISO, etc. functions on my G2 lens, minimally. Guess I'll have to keep looking and waiting. I do NOT need it for any video purposes...strictly portraiture use.

    How is AF supposed to work with the MC-11 and Canon glass on video mode?
    Is there a setting that allows the camera to keep track and pull focus while shooting? I'm new to Sony cameras and I am trying to understand the use of autofocus on movie mode.

  • @AANasseh

    Chris, you should have done the AF while recording video. The AF speed differs while recording than while no card in the camera and not recording. (more CPU power available for AF) .

    I'm using the Metabones IV Canon EF - Sony E on a Sony A7R II with Canon lenses: what does make the eye-AF work on the new Sony A7R III that is missing on the A7R II? I ask because the Sigma MC-11 adapter *does* allow eye-AF with Sigma lenses on my Sony A7R II. Why is that?

  • @SimeonKolev
    @SimeonKolev 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Also MC-11 has some limitations in phase detect points coverage. At least mine has. The Metabones does not have that. Maybe it is because of my 35 1.4 Art. I have not tried the 85 1.4 Art.
    Also I am very curious about the FE-Nikon adapter. Can you test it more :) with more lenses. This will be HUGE about Nikon shooters with a B cam from Sony or just wondering about a switch...

    Hey Guys,
    Thank you for the video. A few quick questions.
    1) How do Tamron EF lenses fare?
    2) How do long zooms fare? 70-200, 100-400?
    3) Would you recommend the fotodiox adapter? The one with the built in ND filter

  • @minusinfinity6974
    @minusinfinity6974 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What mode did you use on the Metabones. This is important to know, green or advanced, can make a big difference. Also did you use flexible spot? I’ve seen many videos showing Canon + metabones tacking runners very well, depending on the lens. 85 f/1.4L IS should have done much better.

  • @daycreek
    @daycreek 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. Thank you for your hard work. I would like to mention that the longer the lens, the more difficult it becomes for these adapters to focus quickly. There are a lot of wildlife/bird photographers out there with long lenses over 400mm that are anxiously awaiting improved accuracy and acquisition. Adapters and newer Sony bodies have come a long way, but IMO the final fronteer to conquer is long lens combinations.
    I frequently use the Canon 600 f/4 II as well as the Sigma 150-600 (Canon mount - Contemporary). I recently tested these lenses at 600mm and 840mm with the A7R3 and both the Metabones and MC-11 adapters work, but not to perfection. Good enough for still or slow moving subjects but not for lightning fast birds-in-flight. As you mention, they have come a long way over time, but not completely there yet. It would be great to see Sigma come out with a 150-600 native lens for Sony mirrorless. That would be an incredible combination. BTW, the Sigma MC-11 with the Sigma shorter lenses work very well for video too.

    The Fringer EF-FX Pro adapter AF in AF-S mode on the Fuji [X-T2] is surprisingly fast. It, too, has not tripod mount (stupid!), but it does appear to be as fast as the Fuji 90mm F2 or the 50mm F2.

    I was looking at a kamera dealer's website here in Sweden as they had a great price on the Ultra model. However, they recommended that if one was going to use a Metabones product with a Panasonic G series camera, the Ultra 0.71 model would not perform well. They recommended the Ultra XL 0.64 instead.
    For what technical reasons would that be the case?
    I've never seen anyone make that determination

    I have a few Canon lenses (the 85 f/1.8 and 50 f/1.4), Sigma (their 24-105 f/4 and 150-600 Contemporary), AND Tamron (the 70-200 f/2.8 VC G2 and 15-30 f/2.8). I pre-ordered the a7III and plan on picking up the Sigma MC-11, but is there a chance the Metabones would be a better all-around choice for lenses from these three companies?

    I have the mc-11 on my Sony but I keep a commlite adapter as well simply because of the tripod mount collar for the bigger heavier lenses. It's really a mystery why Sigma didn't include that option on their adapter especially considering their lenses tend to be massive..

    Thanks for that. I have a Metabones which I have used with my Olympus OEM 1 Mk11. When I first tried it out it worked well with my Tamron 150-600mm but now it shows a black screen! I think I'll give it another go and make sure I'm only geared for single shooting. The Metabones works well with other Canon mount lenses but then they aren't used for bird shooting...

    Hi, Chris. I have the a6000 and I bought the Yongnuo adapter for my Canon glass. Mostly I wanted to use my Canon nifty fifty for night shooting. Speed was not really essential, but it turned out that I must have a factory lemon lens. It is useless under f4, even on my 5D Mark iv. I saw that the Camera Store now sells the Yongnuo 50mm so I bought it. Works great on my Canon, but the Yongnuo adapter doesn’t recognize it. Strictly manual focus shoot wide open. Yongnuo adapter works with all my Canon & Tamron lenses, but can’t recognize Yongnuo. Weird.

    Hope I can add something of interest to your experiences. I have a Canon Sl2 and bought a Lumix G7 to see what that world looks like from a Photography point of view. I bought a CommLite adapter to my G7. I tried to take my Sigma 18-400mm from the SL2 to the G7 and found that the electronics translated Av and Tv but NO AF capability. I then bought a Tamron 18-400mm and was surprised that with the same adapter on the G7 - everything worked fine including the AF. I have no idea why the Sigma wouldn't work but it might be plastic vs. metal?

    Hi, could you please review the Viltrox EF-E mark II speedbooster? This is a cheap product for adapting Canon EF full frame lenses to Sony crop bodies, and it has had a great feedback from the web. Unfortunately until now there's no enough information about the autofocus performance using this adapter.

    Sigma just announced a bunch of ART lenses in the FE mount so there's also that. The A9 will actually track with adapted lenses at 10FPS, which is also something to consider. But for the most part if you need AF-C, go native. However, for AF-S, even the Mark II PDAF bodies will work fine. I have been shooting adapted glass on my A7II for almost 2 years and it's been great.

    Interestingly you didn't test the Sony adapters on the Sony body. I mean laea3 with Sony ssm lens for instance. But more interestingly I think that commlite should do a new Sony A to emount adapter.

  • @BlueBomberTurbo

    Note that the fps limit is more due to the Metabones and Sigma (using non-Global Vision lenses) emulating the LA-EA3 adapter, which has an AF tracking limit of 3fps. Since the MC-11 emulates native lenses with Sigma's Global Vision lenses, that limit is removed. Only the A9 will work with the LA-EA3 above 3fps, and only with the recent firmware update that can only be installed through the A9.
    Also, the MC-11 will only AF in video with Global Vision lenses. Everything else is MF. Metabones, on the other hand, will video AF anything in Advanced Mode.

    I'm thinking about getting the A7iii to replace my canon c100 mkii. I've only got one "expensive" canon lens, the 24-105 f4. I'm just not using the c100 to it's fullest and I rather get something that can track my 2 year old daughter for good photos and pretty good video. I do simple video shoots at work, but the a7iii could definitely cover that. My question is: Should I sell the c100 to get an A7iii and a metabones for the 25-105, OR sell the c100 & the 24-105 to get an A7iii with a comparable native lens?

The problem stems from the fact that I want to use that setup for video. I have the Canon 5dsr along with the holy trinity of L lenses for studio, landscaping and macro work. I only have my 5dmkiii for video which doesn't work for me because of an eye issue (loss of vision) I NEED autofocus for video. What are my options besides forking over another shit tonne of CAD for lenses? Do I give up on the idea and stick with a bulky Canon?

    It would have been nice to see the Sony adapters for A-mount lenses in here. Sony limits continuous focusing with all adapters to the "Lo" drive setting.

    Can you shoot in afc for video w canon to lenses and the mc11? For example 24mm stm 2.8 and the mc-11 for video?

    I've also tested the Sigma MC11 can focus continuously very well in video with Sigma glass, I believe that's the only combo that works for video. I don't think metabones can do video AFC consistently with any lenses in might be wrong!!

    I have the Commlite v05 and Sony A5600.. well.. it works.. but not suitable for any demanding photography project and don't maintain focusing in continuous shooting unless you used the slow option or it will focus on the first frame only.

    Please review the Viltrox EF-M2 adapter for EF mount lenses to micro 4/3 cameras. There's a lot of hype for these adapters and they're getting sold out everywhere but almost all the vids are with a GH-5 and 18-35/1.8. Some other camera/lens combinations would be nice too.

    I have been using the Commlite for my Canon glass on my A6000 and A7Rii. I recently picked up the MC11 along with the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. I've updated the lenses adapters, cameras and the USB dock. when comparing the two adapters with my Canon 24-105MK1 I found that when using the Sigma MC11 the A7Rii would not auto-stabilize and grayed out the option, but when using the Commlite in the exact same manor I was able to use auto-detect IBS with it. As an aside I am very disappointed in the fact that the apps are going away as I do mainly landscape. The Smooth Reflections and time lapse apps are invaluable to me. I hope that they are also keeping the remote control app as well. I will not be upgrading from the A7Rii to the new Mkiii due to this.

    Since Sigma claims there new emount lenses will have more focusing ability than with the mc-11 adapter. Even though they basically put an mc11 permanently on the new lenses. I am wondering if Sigma will be able to do a firmware update for the mc-11 so it performs as good as there new Sigma fe mount glass.

    • @NighthunterNyx

      I guess the chances are we will never know if they can or cannot update MC-11 to have better AF tracking. They will most likely not update it

    • @pasmphotography1845
      @pasmphotography1845 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The MC-11 has to convert the signals from the Sony camera to either Sigma SA or Canon EOS signals to actually get the lens to function. This extra step may not seem like much but my understanding is that it is a bottleneck. By natively programing the lens to Sony's specifications it is going to communicate faster with the camera. I use an mc-11 extensively, and I find it totally adequate for most purposes, however there is no reason their new e-mount versions of their lenses should not out-perform the adapted lenses in terms of speed/responsoveness

    • @KelvinKamsg
      @KelvinKamsg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just speculation:
      -Sigma should be able to update the mc-11, but it depends if the agreement with Sony allows them to do so.
      -Also updating just the adapter would benefit Sony much more than it would Sigma as they would gain only minor revenue from the adapter sales but potentially lose lens sales due to people using/keeping canon lenses instead.

      Well sigma doesn't make any m43rds adapters. I would love it if Sigma made a regular adapter, a speed booster and a 1.4x adapter for M43rds in there SA mount to M43rds. Sigma is a member of the four thirds community, has the full working knowledge of M43rds, yet does not release any adapters. This in my mind would not only push the sales of sigma lenses but also the sales of Quantro cameras. Because why not test it if you already have the glass.

    Which camera in your opinion (including and mostly Jordan) will work better with Tamron 150-600mm lens: - sony A7iii or GH5/G9 for video, meaning some auto functions are available, mostly focus. And recomendations on adapter for such set up, and with additional 1.4 x or 2x converter. Thank you.

    Sony was the first to produce a modern mirrorless camera with APS-C sensor in 2010 Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5 and the first with a full frame sensor in 2013 a7 and a7R.
    An unexpected success of the Sony mirrorless cameras is their ability to support nearly all autofocus lenses from major manufacturers with native and third party adapters due to their short flange distance which is even shorter than that of usually smaller mirrorless micro four-thirds cameras.
    The metabones speed booster is a really useful adapter because it does more than adapt deferent lens mounts.
    A serious omission is the native Sony LA-EA4 LensAdapter-EmountAmount which is compatible with nearly all autofocus a-mount lenses since the Minolta film era.

    I have the Sigma MC-11 that I use on my Sony a6300 and my Sony A7R2. Eye auto focus works fine with my Sigma lenses but, How are you getting it to work with the Canon lenses? I have updated the firmware of the adapter but when I try to use eye auto focus with my Canon lenses it says it's not available with the lens I am using. Does it only work with newer Canon lenses?

    Are there any options for Pentax/K-mount lenses (that keep AFocus features)??? I love shooting with my K-1, and love the IQuality that comes from my lineup of lenses. It really feels like a complete kit (can't think of a range or situation it can't handle). I can post what lenses I have, if interested. Very tempted to get a Sony a7iii, but not if that means I need to invest in complete new glass. I saw something about using a TechArt Pro + Leica adapter??

    hi, i tested this adapter with Sony A9 and Nikon 200-500 and found these issues:
    1. There seem to be shortage of voltage to the adapter. If i turn off the camera, turn it back on, the lens is not working. I have to detach the lens, put it back then it will power the adapter again. Seem like a reboot. This mean, you CAN NOT turn off your camera while waiting for action ---> drain out battery faster
    2. No Zone focusing.
    3. Relate to #1, when put back the lens, you have to put it back at 200m mark. Let say you're shooting at 500mm, detach, reattach and you still leave it at 500mm, nothing work. Turn it to 200mm, detach, reattach, bammn..everything is back to normal.
    is there anything commlite can do to improve?
