  • We were in Marianna, FL training and cave diving with Edd so we asked him to tell us the true story of how this rescue came about. All the snippets we saw on the news were only a couple of minutes long so we knew there had to be more to the story!
    If you are not familiar with Edd, he is one of the world's greatest cave divers, and considered the world's greatest underwater cave rescue diver.
    In the world of cave diving, Edd is the elite of the elite, and we are lucky to call him a friend, and instructor.
    If you want to learn more about Edd and see some more of his gnarly cave diving videos, check out his TH-cam channel and subscribe here: / caveadventurers

    A guy is missing for over a day. Several pro divers couldn't find him. Ed arrives: 'I got no plan. I just go down there and see what I got.' He goes down, comes back up after 45 Minutes with not a body, but with the guy alive and well. What an actual legend.

      @@savagegtalks5912 I'm not a diver, but as an outsider looking in, for such a small community of people with this rare skillset, there sure appears to be a lot of ego. I'd consider him a hero, not necessarily for his experience, but because of why he does it. He doesn't have to do this. It's voluntary and he pays out of his own pocket to service. This is a selfless act that demonstrates great character and a sense of humanity.

      Absolutely! People think this guy puts his life on the line to make a ton of money...not at all, it's all out of pocket and he expects no payment and no recognition for his work.
      He told us a story last week where he went to do a body recovery, somebody found that "an expert was coming" and where he was staying, so when he go to the hotel the press was there was cameras and stuff, so he told the taxi to keep driving and went to another hotel to avoid the reporters because he wanted no distractions before he went in to do the recovery. So he had to pay for two hotels basically because of the press. It cost him double, no complaints, he got them out.

    • @dfgiuy22
      @dfgiuy22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +91

      I mentioned this in another comment. There is, and always have been those who will do what's required. Volunteer fire, search and rescue etc, many of those guys/gal's ain't paid.
      Just knowing your doing the right thing, and being one of the few everyone else looks to when things go wrong... is a massive pay-off in itself.
      In a day and age when everyone thinks that the whole world is self centred, it's not the case. No one would do those, feed the homeless or rescue/recover divers if there were not people who just want to help others.

    These are so great. Really admire Edd and his matter of fact humility. My dad (Bill Hurst) died cave diving in Peacock Slough in North Florida back in the seventies. (We only know what happened from his slate, on which he wrote “Got lost. Tell Carol and Thomas I love them.”) Dad was a veteran cave diver who dove constantly with two of his dive buddies as Sheck Exley and Louis Holsendorf (Sorry, terrible spelling on my part) I wish there was someone like Ed back then. He truly is a Superman in so many ways.

      Like that guy that was stuck in an upturned boat on the bottom of the ocean for 3 days. When the rescue divers came in they were expecting another dead body only for the guy to grab the driver's hand. Not only did the diver freak out the guy on the boat directing the diver where to go in the boat. Starts yelling "he's alive, he's alive, keep him there and reassure him. Holy f**k" They had to put on a tank where the diver and his voice were squeaky high. I guess it's a helium mix. They had to take him to the diver's bell and he spent 2 and a half days in a hyperbaric chamber. The video of the guy grabbing the diver in the silty darkroom is scary but exciting to see him alive. Even I freaked out. They thought it was a body bumping into him until the guy responded. The guy on the boat directing the dive asked the survivor what his position was on the boat and he says "cook" the divemaster says "it's always the cook." Infographics have a video about it and the video of the rescue is here on YT. I put the clip of it on here for Gus and Woody to check out.

  • @ddevulders
    @ddevulders 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    Hey guys small tip: if you're interviewing on a rectangular shaped table with the camera opposite of the interviewee you will create a scene where the interviewee has to actively switch between left and right to address you both since that's the natural way people communicate. Now Edd is an amazing storyteller and was very capable of telling this story but if you have someone next to you that might be a little more nervous the story will come out hasty and it might become difficult to listen to. If you we're able to move the camera back, have Edd sit on the small side of the table and you both on the same side it would flow a lot easier.
    If you we're able to move the camera to the opposite edge of the table Edd would only be able to see it in his peripheral vision and he would probably forget it's even there after 5 minutes creating a stronger story. Now, once again, Edd is an amazing story teller on his own so it wasn't distracting at all.

    • @Mandy_39
      @Mandy_39 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really because just like you said it's natural to look left & right at somebody. The storyteller, nor anyone really doesn't need to look into the camera as much. You want to look & talk to the other people at the table. Then again I'm not in photography so who knows lol. I just look at it like you're sitting at a dinner table with friends telling a story, this is how u would do it no?

His strength is getting in, thinking on his feet) and pulling people out, and he’s a solo mission. I am not a caver of any kind. But, if I was stuck in a cave, and I hear a rescuer, and he comes out of the water, and it’s Ed, I can only imagine, that alone, helps calm the person. Trust is already there. Confidence that your rescuer is top notch. And no problem putting your life in their hands.

  • @whispersinthedark88
    @whispersinthedark88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's a special mixture of skill , calm and MacGyver like intuition. Being able to improvise and trust that your intuition, knowledge, and skills will guide you along the way is very rare indeed, and isn't something that can be taught , you either have it within you or you don't. Ed went in there and in under an hour he managed what all those other experienced divers couldn't in the previous 20+ hours..(and that's not meant to discredit the other divers at all). I can definitely see why the guy being rescued was so relieved and happy to find out who his rescuer was, since he actually knew of him and no doubt that helped him be calm and trust Ed to get him out.
    What a great story, and I'm guessing that it was a wonderful feeling for Ed to actually find him alive and get to bring out the man not a body. 💙
