#Batman #GrantMorrison
If you remember in 52 when Batwoman was introduced, her main antagonist is the worshippers of the "Religion Of Crime", who adhere to the crime bible. The crime bible had a direct connection to Darkseid in Final Crisis. Grant/Greg both were responsible for the creation of it, so it makes sense for Kate to be there, because of the connection to the crime bible she mentions. In general, plot points in 52 (Morrison did help write it after all) are referenced all throughout Grant's run on Batman, I'd say it's just as important of a read as Seven Soldiers thematically.
Love your videos! Amazing duo! Hope you guys get to Batman Incorporated before 2023 ends. Apologies for the wall of text.
It's always a treat when the Imperius Rex boys dip into the Scottish Pond of Grant Morrison.
A few things, I love the generational aspect of Batman when Dick and Damian are in charge of the Dynamic Duo. It is an injection of freshness that's sorely needed from the... conservatively 40 million Bat-Books.
Going back you could argue Alfred and Bruce are their own Duo prior to the inclusion of Dick.
That aside, I believe the aesthetic term coined for this era was Acid Bubblegum, and I think that fits perfectly with that odd dichotomy of intense violent and upsetting material mixed with flashy costumes and daring do-gooders WHAM BIF and KABOWING their way through a mystery.
But per usual, you've done did a good episode!
Acid Bubblegum is the perfect description for this.
I really liked grant Morrison Batman run it was really awesome and tons of fun.
Also great episode guys on covering grant Morrison Batman run and all the craziness that happens in that series.
Bat symbol, it goes all floppy after Damian hits him in the chest with a shovel, why that makes the symbol on his chest go floppy (shrugs) it’s a funny coincidence that I reread this like a week ago
The best part is hearing Troy just crack up while Cody is explaining the plot
the whole cloning of bruce wayne story was made to explain why they can have superman holding batman's corpse on the cover
You guys are every bit as good as Comic Pop. Keep up the good work!
Excellent rundown of a unique moment in Bat-History as Morrison, et al, send us careening into a radically new take on how Batman and Robin can continue to exist in the wake of Bruce's "death". The dynamic, both internally and to the world at large, shows how the Legend of the Dark Knight could go on even if Bruce never returned (yeah, right!). Dick and Damien both have to adapt to the world left in the wake of Final Crisis: a new, psychotically chaotic place with far more insane villainy that existed before. This dynamic leads to the creation of BATMAN INC as a new way to divert attention from Bruce by making him the focus of this new configuration of the mythos he has created over the decades. The Dick/Damien run WAS all-too-brief: by the time the new duo, and us readers, adjusted to this new team, it was all over, reset to a viscerally different status quo.
(Of course, with the passage of FLASHPOINT, THE NEW 52 and REBIRTH, none of this even matters, anymore, roit?)
As to the "floppy" emblem: what if Dick utilized a version of Bruce's Bat-Shield--Bruce's under the costume and Dick's as a "flexible" plate of some kind to deflect projectiles (and the odd shovel)? What if when Damien struck his chest, the shield got bent/distorted to where it is still attached, but loosened from Dick's uniform?
I mean, if we can expected to buy a banana peel, we could swallow that...right?
Finally! A real reason to look forward to Easter!! Thanks, Guyz! 🖖♾
Great ep guys really did a good job with this one! Cant wait for return of batman! My floppy bat symbol theory is the bat is another layer of armor and when Damien hits it with the shovel it comes off a bit from being damaged.
As soon as I posted the image in the video that occurred to me. Like the symbol is a metal covering that absorbed the impact and dented. I guess we'll go with that, but it still looks ridiculous.
I love that you guys got the guy Batman analyst guy on the show 😂this is easily the best comic story yt channel
Cody is a scholar and a saint. And Supergods willing, it's not the last we'll hear from him on the show ;)
Whaaat? Didn't you do this one already? That's unbelievable, but I am hyped non the less. Morrison and Batman is the quintessential Imperius Rex experience.
Crazy right? We only covered the first Omnibus last Batyear- so this is all new baby!
It's a great day when you get Imperious Rex & Batman & Grant Morrison!
Thanks guys.

Darkseid left one of the dead Batman clones from Batman #682 & #683 (Final Crisis) to throw off the Justice League. Darkseid didn't want them to know that he sent Bruce into the past, loaded with enough Omega radiation to destroy everything once he time-jumped back to his own timeline.
Doctor Hurt returned recently, as a Nightwing villain.
grant morrison's red hood is what dc should have let jason todd to stay being: a senseless killer straight up supervillain. the costume looks very close to the og red hood and has resemble to the villain from animal man
in pre crisis, jason todd was a redhead
Interesting- didn't know his roots were red.
Classic Rex ep. Drunk Dave, Trashed Troy, Grant Fucking Morrison...the hallmarks.
Really like how you guys are like "and they we never seen again" whilst I know every single villain in this run is used again in Nightwing Rebirth. Which makes Hurt a chump. Seriously having read that & not Morrison, every time you guys mention him in this it's like "but he's a loser?! Who cares?!"
Huh. Never knew he returned. Just looked it up. Looks forgettable.
@@ImperiusRex I've read it. It is.
When Dr. Hurt had his multiversal knife in rebirth??? Lol
Awesome video! I hated grant’s run the first time I read it, but every time since I’ve loved it more and more. Still so confused about so much but it’s what keeps me coming back and reading it again. Probably my all time favorite comic.
I actually liked it being the Joker. I know I’m in the minority but I like the idea that when Bruce isn’t around the Joker isn’t “the joker” he’s something else. I felt that Joker turning on a dime is his style but when Bruce is gone the turn is more extreme. Plus I like Dr Hurt. To me he’s not Thomas Wayne or the devil. He’s the dude from that old issue thats featured in the black case book that shows up in this when Batman does the depravation tank for the military and he’s been planning this since then.
Yeah- there's some interesting material to be explored with Joker feeling compelled to "fill in" for Batman. As we said, I wish we could've had some more time with it before having to revert back to status quo
Loved the episode! Loved Cody Walker.
"It's like those jerks that are like - this is the true ending of Twin Peaks - like, shup up! No, it's not!"
YES, Cody! YES!!!
I was afraid you guys were gonna cover B&R and Return of Bruce Wayne in 39 minutes, but thankfully Return will come later. So much to unpack here, every time I watch someone talk about this run, or read something about it, it feels like I never even read it, definitely my favourite Batman run. I'll make sure to get around to it again soon, only read it once.
Also, I feel like I should've watched this at night so I could be as drunk as you guys instead of drinking coffee. Might need to rewatch it later lol
His twin peaks line got me so good!
I generally laughed when brought out the research book(it makes perfect sense some one would make one for Morrison) then went into a interview keep their mid video plot twists coming
I'll always love this era just for Dick as Batman, not a fan of GM though but oh well lol
AFAIK Flamingo has 1 live action appearance in Gotham (nothing as colorful as in comics) and was mentioned once in Batwoman (maybe he will appear lately).
Oh my... might need to check that out.
@@ImperiusRex Don't hold your breath though.
Not for him, just watch Gotham for other villains.
@Imperious Rex ~ Love your interview stuff. Great insights.
Love you guys!!!
Would you ever be interested in covering any Green Lantern stories? I've loved the Lanterns after Geoff Johns run
Have heard Morrisons Run was quite good but haven't had time to sit down and read anything recently
Thanks Michael- Johns' Lantern run was always a bit intimidating to me, having no strong attachment to the character. And it doesn't hurt that EVS did the majority of the art and he's a complete dirtbag. Might consider doing Morrison's GL run sometime, but from what I read of it upon its release- it was sooo weird- even by Grant's standards. Might make for a fun discussion though. I remember there was a Green Lantern who's head was literally an active volcano. Which is obviously objectively amazing.
@@ImperiusRex Please do Morrison's GL 🙏
I've never thought of evs as a dirt bag. Sure he might think ideologically different to you and the majority of current comic book writers but that doesn't make him a dirt bag. I actually think you all would get a long quite well. Oh well, pre conceived notions and twitter mob brainwashing will get ya. I mean 3/4 of the super liberal, super untalented comic industry have called him a Nazi for no reason so I guess dirt bag is an upgrade.
“Chekhov’s Banana peel”
I love Dick Grayson as Batman.
Ditto. I recently re-read Black Mirror featuring Dick as Batman and it might even be a better characterization of him under the cowl than this run to be honest.
That iPod nano Mr pyg has
I like morrisons batman stuff but its never been my favorite of his. Always liked allstar superman, jla and animal man more. Also i would highly recommend his book supergods where you can read his thoughts on the golden, silver, dark and modern age. if you liked what he said about batman stories in the kevin smith podcast, you would probably like it. He brings up watchmen, dark knight returns, astro city, marvels and more.
Yessir- terrific book. Read it a while back and have actually been thinking about giving it a reread.
My question is why did robin have to do it to em like that
Ask the questions...
Floppy Bat symbol theory: Bruce is coming back, so Dick is losing the mantle of Batman as such the symbol is peeling away from Dick. Or it's just a goof by Grant & co for the sake of fucking with people. Or more likely both & seventy other things because Morrison.
Rest in peace? Really?
This is a great and insightful video, but I need to be honest. This Batman video is kind of confusing, after this I think you guys should take a vacation. Also Dave, on your shirt is Batman swinging on a sex swing? If so where do you buy these shirts?
Is Sergio telling us to retire? ;)
Just kidding- we were quite drunk but the time we recorded this, so it's a bit all over the place. And to make matters worse, it's a Morrison book, which is already all over the place. If you think this was bad- wait until the follow up this weekend- the Return of Bruce Wayne!
Also shirt was a design by an artist "scarborough debutante," but lately they've been pretty quiet so I don't know if it's still available. Love it though.
@@ImperiusRex Thanks for the reply, looking forward to the Easter video. I don't want you guys to retire, it's just the synopsis seems no pun intended bat shit crazy. After reading this it's like: "Uhhh, what just happened!?" Heck 'The Invisibles' has more cohesion than this and that looks even more bonkers. Anyway thanks for the video, good job, and good laughs from you and Troy. Happy Easter. PS I'm not ragging on Morrison he's a fantastic writer, but this Batman arc seems like a mindjob. Take care.
Mindjob Morrison. Checks out! :)
What is this supposed to be? You introduce a character or an idea shown in the comic and then proceed to just say "Yeah, just skip that."
Drunken train of thought.
