I caught a TON OF TROUT out of this creek! (First time Euro Nymphing)

  • MY FIRST TIME EURO NYMPHING - Euro nymphing has quickly proven itself as one of the easiest ways to catch trout regardless of the weather conditions. On my first ever attempt we turned an alright day in to a great day in about an hour as I worked my way through a section of creek which was loaded with wild rainbow trout. I hope you all enjoy this small creek mission!

    Great vid guys! And thanks for the responsible fishing reminder!
    Looks like you need no help out there, but a tip about hook sets. Since you’re tight-line nymphing, a quick/precise 2-3 inch hook set is all you need. No need for a powerful set. Yes, there’s been times in hindsight a stronger set could have prevented a larger fish from shaking me, but much rarer do you miss with a perfectly timed quick set ;) “hook sets are free” they say.
    Also, second using sighter material. Something I picked up spending time tenkara fishing, using a slightly stiff level line. When holding that sighter just above the water surface, if it has a kink in it that becomes the most sensitive strike indicator on the planet. Give it a try, hope it works for you! Cheers.

      @hardmanfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the tips!! Yeah I know my hook sets were a bit off. It had more to do with me not exactly knowing what a strike was than anything else. I've even watched people euro nymph so I know exactly what you're talking about. It is just something I'll get the hang of with time. The sighter thing with a kink in the line is brilliant!! I'll definitely have to remember that.
      Thanks for watching!

    Good job! It's a killer technique and not too difficult once you learn the basics. Remember, get your nymphs down to the bottom and that the flow is slower there so keeping your line off the water will minimize drag on your fly. Tight lines, guys!

      I like the way you guys fish, and that creek looked like a lot of fun. Perfect size trout for a 3wt or tenkara rod. I watch videos like yours for the vicarious escape, so I appreciate hearing the water and splash of the fish and not overly loud music. Looking forward to your next episodes

    Yessir! Some of my favorite guys using my favorite style/set up. Good that you have that new set up from Risen. I have a 23PS too, but not the euro rod. I am sure it is good tho. Great company and good due that owns it. Nice job in the first segment of video where you let the nymphs swing in that quick riffle, when you were upstream of it. I don't know if getting 3 for 3 is common though :) I have done it maybe 6 or so times. Cool when it happens, but rare. So heck of a job! Also, since you asked for feedback last time... here are my thoughts:
    Wind in line with you left hand as the drift comes toward you to pick up slack to avoid drag.
    Set the hook a little harder, not a bass set, but more than just a small lift of the rod. Especially with barbless.
    Look into sighter material possibly, if you have some already get it closer to water and not so high up in guides.
    After you cast do a quick rod tip raise and that drives flies down quicker into water. Very helpful in faster/deep water (tuck cast)
    As I say all of this keep in mind you literally have a shot counter of all the fish you caught lol. Look forward to fishing with you sometime to help explain more.
    Keep up the great work guys. Love it!

    • @hardmanfishing
      @hardmanfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah when I watched the footage I realized my hook sets were weak at best. The reason though was because I was unsure of what a strike looked/felt like and if I truly set the hook I'd probably end up in the bushes. So I was a little gun shy. It is definitely something I will work on as I get better. I also agree with the line management, that is something that I used to struggle with when I first started fly fishing but has gotten better. It is just easier to have poor management and still be successful because not much line is ever out at any given time.
      Thanks for the tips!! I'll definitely put them to use next time I'm out here in a few weeks. Just trying to be able to tight line like Mike!
      Thanks for watching man

      @@hardmanfishing Funny you say about gun shy. Just had that problem today on the water. Trees and branches everywhere. Was handing up all over the place. However, I follow the mantra hook up or hang up. So if I get hung in a tree on a good cast, or setting the hook, I can live with it as long as the process is right. Totally get where you are coming from though, and I still do that same thing. The reality is, that it is easy to play monday morning quarterback from a computer chair. So without being there I can't have all the info, and odds are you know what to do. You had a great trip for a reason. Tweak a little, but keep doing what you are doing!

      @@tightliningmd Yep I am just programed to avoid snags. It's like something that I do almost subconsciously as I'm fishing. Either way I welcome all of the tips/advice I can get!

    Fun to see the euro style being used in smaller waters. It’s amazing how much further you can cast with the bow and arrow technique and then not spook the fish. Just difficult to set the hook sometimes on creeks when trees are overgrown.

    Good job guys...not rocket science, but science nonetheless. Didn't see your set up, but I like to tie a double surgeon knot and leave one tag end about 5-6" long and tie your top fly off that. Like to fish a heavy fly up top and a smaller, unweighted fly on bottom,14-18" apart. Heavy top fly gets down on bottom and trailing,unweighted fly rides a little off bottom, like an emerging nymph..get to bottom quickly and stay there as long as possible...Those " cooperative" rainbows made it look easy ! Just kidding,believe your a natural bottom nympher...I'm just an old man,not able to fish much anymore, and I enjoy passing along ,what I hope to be helpful tips. Always look forward to new videos.

    • @hardmanfishing
      @hardmanfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nah I'm sure those fish did make it look easy!! I 100% would not have tried a new technique somewhere where I thought it would be a struggle to catch anything. Learning a new technique can be frustrating if you don't catch much so you never know if you're doing something wrong or not. But I'll definitely try and check out using a unweighted nymph, it sounds like a great idea! Thanks for watching

    • @hardmanfishing
      @hardmanfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you!! And nope, rainbows spawn in the spring. Their peak spawn is usually around April, but can spawn as early as January and as late as may/June. Kind of depends on the creek. Of course that is in my area, it is possible that other parts of the world/country they do something different.
