  • Video of Michael Evanko fly fishing Chittenango Creek in Madison County, New York. The Chittenango flows out of swampland in Fenner, New York and heads north, eventually dumping into Oneida Lake. This freestone stream holds a healthy population of wild brown trout. The state of New York also stocks hatchery raised brown trout to alleviate the fishing pressure on the wild fish. The water fished in this video is all accessible through Public Fishing Rights. A portion of the water fished is catch and release only. The water is easily found along Rt.13. This video was shot in early September 2017.

    I grew up in Caz. We used to fish the Chittenango Creek with worms all the time with some success. It was always just a great time to be out exploring the area with friends. Now I’m in the Capital District area, and fish the Kinderhook Creek. I’ve been trying to get more experience with the fly rod, my casting leaves a lot to be desired.
    It was good to see some of the old creek I used to frequent about 40 years ago. Thank you for the memories.

    Thanks for the video. Could you tell me if the first section you fished is above the falls? If not, is it below the falls but above the Catch And Release section?

    I love that creek. Reminds me of my favorite freestone stream in the Uinta Mountains in Utah. Lots of different water to read, runs, riffles, boulders, etc. That's what makes it fun not necessarily the size or quantity of fish. Thanks for the very entertaining video.
    I grew up in Western NY and fished Dodge and Ischua creeks near Cuba and Franklinville, NY respectively. I don't know what ever became of those waters, pollution, construction, etc but at one time did hold numerous Browns and Brookies. It's a ways but would love to see you get out that way. October is great. And maybe take an 8-9 wt and pull streamers for pike and Muskie right in downtown Olean.

    This video shows how much technique goes into fishing. Of course, my biggest AJ was around 45#, so I'm not too sure how the big boys would fight. On the Gulf Coast, we have big gag grouper that fight harder than any AJ for the first couple seconds after you hook them.

      And what's great about most of the small streams my way this time of year is you've pretty much got the streams to yourself. I've not done any stream videos yet. I have a habit of slipping and falling on the rocks and afraid to break my camera.. lol

    1st trout was wild. The next two were stocked. Stockers will not have a white pronounced ring around their spots and will also not have colored spots most of the time.

    Mike I was going to fish Chittenango Creek the same day but ended up going to Limestone in Fayetteville. I fish Chittenango quite often and is my favorite within the area. How long are you in town for?

      That spot at 9:30 that you lost that good fish, I lost a few very good ones on that same spot and stretch, recently too. Glad to see you give Chitt a try! If you happen to come back, let me know and would love to help you find that 16"-20" brown that do live there! PS. Salmon River is starting to fire up!

    Hey man great videos! I am new to New York and new to trout fly fishing. I just picked up a fly rod set up from Troutfitter and some flies to get me started, I was watching your videos and see you use a dropper rig. I had a question about that rig, is that pretty much a standard set up for you with an indicator above and if so any insight on what size line and best set up for that rig? Thanks!

    • @WoolyBugged
      @WoolyBugged  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kyle Metzger first off, thanks for watching and welcome to the fly fishing game. Careful, you'll get addicted! So to start out nymphing under the surface, the easiest set-up is this. Get a 9-10' rod in the 4-6wt range. Get a reel and weight forward floating line that matches the rod weight. Buy a tapered prepackaged 9'-5X leader and some 5X tippet. Put the leader on your fly line, add 24" of tippet. Tie on the first nymph. Then tie a second piece of 5X tippet off the hook bend to a second nymph. Add an indicator and position it to 1-1/2 times the water depth you are fishing. Then add weight as needed above or between the nymphs. Now your fishing like me.

    Family has house on Chittenango Creek. Been fishing there over 20 years. Just caught 28" catfish last summer. Hoping for northern, or walleye this year!
