  • There's a reason people love their TDI Sportwagens: they were literally too good to be true. But road warrior and racing instructor Austin's Jetta is just as ready to be used as a hotel room as it is for a Global Time Attack race.

      I didn't think you meant that kind of snow. We don't really get that much snow. Not even in ski ressorts. They clear the streets here immediately even if it's just half an inch. Yeah in that case go for the all wheel.

    Nice - I had a 2.0 TDI Golf once and it was brilliant. I sold it because ultimately no matter how fast a car is, the noise it makes is a KEY part of the drama. It is the same reason why I will not be rushing to spend my childrens inheritance money on a Tesla or something. Sure they are blisteringly fast but for me it is like drinking decaf coffee ...or eating curry that is not spicy - the goodness is there but it can never make up for the lack of drama. But I like your work and approach to tuning ...and general attitude.

    2011 JSW TDI, awesome car, super fun to drive. Handles really nicely, it's not fast, but for a fuel efficient car it's great. Averages 40 mpg, 6 speed manual, great build quality, terrible electronics (fuses, sunshade, lights), but I'd buy another if the prices weren't getting ridiculous in the states.

      +sliwka621 i wish some european would back me up. for such roads like on video you need the torque which is available from 1800 until 2500. that horsepower at 4200 rpm makes sense when driving on highway top speed.

    • @rightwingsafetysquad9872
      @rightwingsafetysquad9872 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Before the Jetta wagon we had the Passat wagon. The Passat one was slightly larger, but only slightly. Because of this it's probably that they wanted to keep the sedan name on the wagon rather than the hatch. Also, the Jetta outsells the Golf in North America by a large margin (the GTI outsells the standard Golf here as well), so they again, want the more popular name on it.

CO2 isn't toxic. meanwhile diesels carbon monoxide gives you cancer. petrol engines almost don't emit that. that's why diesels have a ton of crap to control emissions, but petrol only have catalytic converters. that's why "green" cars like prius, or other hybrids are all petrol engines even when they consume less

    • @upload9595

      What's the difference in the lifespan of diesel or petrol engies? they both use oil, so when one runs out, the other does too. what's your point there? Do you expect gasoline engines to end, and diesel to be the future? they run on the same crap...
      Actually, modern diesel fuel requeres more energy to produce than petrol because of measurements to reduce sulfur emissions during diesel production.

    I run a '12 Wagon w/ the 2.5 with IE Stage one tune, along w/ GTI springs, Koni sport. Upgraded brakes w/ aftermarket performance rotors and EBC red pads. (stock size rotors) and the brakes are more than adequate for this vehicle. Big brakes look cool but are really expensive. (also has a chassis x-brace) It's no rocket ship, but a hoot to flog around back roads. VW no longer sells wagons in the US.

      I have a 13 it’s so much fun, what do you recommend with suspension

    • @joseph-ow1hf
      @joseph-ow1hf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liamfeeney3776 If you want handling, the first place to start is with quality high performance tires. Now you don't need to run some super sticky summer only compound. Those wear quickly, spray grit all over your paint and provide more grip than the suspension is designed to handle. I'd go w/ a performance A/S. I run the Goodyear Eagle F1 and just better at everything than what came on car. Acceleration, braking, steering precision in both wet and dry. Even passible in light snow. Plus nice ride. But other companies like Michelin make fine examples. On suspension, I chose to go w/ a factory spring as I knew it would work w/ the existing suspension geometry. Also VW uses a linear rate spring, whereas many aftermarket springs are progressive. You can't just willy nilly start putting in coil overs and expect it to work, unless you really know your stuff. Now I outsmarted myself on shocks. I originally wanted Koni FSD, but Koni says not for use with lowering springs......so I went w/ the Sport version. A bit of a mistake. On softest setting, these shocks are over dampened for the spring rate. The FSD would have been better.....because the GTI spring is not a lowering spring....it's a stock VW part. Another good choice would be Bilstein B8. The Koni Sports work fine, but you feel every road imperfection.......not super stiff like a Focus RS, but a bit unpleasant.
      The chassis X-brace really helps stiffen up the rear of the car with is a bit floppy due to the large hatch. A key to handling is a very stiff chassis. Let's the suspension do it's job. (one reason supercars use carbon tubs)
      Plan to add larger rear anti sway bar to mitigate FWD understeer. Was afraid of inducing 'lift off oversteer', but my buds at the Vortex forum tell me not to worry.
      Lot of options w/ tunes on that TDI. My tuned 2.5 gasser is on par w/ the GTI of that era, as it has nearly the HP but even more torque. Of course, not in same league as the newer cars.
      Sorry for the dissertation.

    I think its a common misconception that you don't rev a diesel out a little. My Landrover TD5 still makes good power in the higher revs. Its not totally stock tho.

    • @iroquoispliskin6077

      Fly Guy these don’t really benefit from anything over about 4300-4500rpm until you upgrade the turbo. Stage 2 cams and valve springs help a lot with high rpm CR TDI power too but mostly after the turbo.

      After...If they "fix" your TDI, you will get a fistful of cash. Use the cash to get all the power and fuel economy back. Just get the map flashed back to stock a couple weeks before emissions testing. Pass test. Re-flash back to power mode.

  • @erikhadinger7655
    @erikhadinger7655 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love the video love the car. But what is up with your tune I have a rawteck downpipe and 3 in exhaust back to the stock Muffler and a Malone stage 2 tune. First gear and second gear are pretty useless just spins Tire 3rd gear still spins Tire a little bit. Mine definitely seems quicker than yours but I love the suspension work you put into yours. 2010 VW TDI SportWagen with 254,000 MI still a beautiful car going strong.

  • @bottomlayer
    @bottomlayer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice wagon! Too bad you don't have the panoramic sunroof. Have they figured out what the recall will entail and what they need to fix it? Do you plan on getting the recall fix whenever it comes out? Do you plan on rollin coal?
    Have you have any reliability issues with your car?

    • @Tracktunedtv
      @Tracktunedtv 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +bottomlayer Thanks. I actually didn't want the sunroof. It's nice to have, but seeing as I plan to keep this car 10+ years, I've read too many issues on the sunroofs leaking and having issues to make me feel comfortable with owning one. No idea what they will do with the recall. Honestly, I'm not even worried. I'll do what needs to be done in my state to get it registered, then put it right back to the way it is now. No reliability issues. Up to 83k miles now and haven't had a single problem.

      People usually buy them for commuting to save money on fuel.
      You'll find many people who enjoy driving would have one for driving to work, but a standard gasoline car for the weekend.
      Gale Banks could also sway your opinion on diesels.

    • @cobrajack-official
      @cobrajack-official 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The torque is addictive. So is the fuel economy and longevity. I've owned a lot of vehicles and I'm hard pressed to find a better all-arounder than one of these modified TDI Wagens.
