Tudor Pelagos Review: In-Depth Watch Review

  • The Tudor Pelagos is the brand's top of the line titanium dive watch that was built to withstand the rigors of the sea. But what if you aren’t a diver? I’m more of what you would call a “desk diver,” not a scuba diver. So, in this in-depth video review, I’ll look at all the little details of the Pelagos to see how it would work as an everyday tool watch.
    The Tudor Pelagos has a retail price of $4,400 USD

    I love where Tudor is going with the brand. They are moving away from the low cost conservative Rolex look and more towards a stand alone bolder design. The Tudor of today is different than the Tudor of yesteryear and that is great for many reasons.

      Yes totally agree, they hit a new gold ore when they made the Black Bay series. That said they have relied too much on shooting Black Bay models out if you ask me. The Daytona clones are nice, not very original, I want to see them reinvent or create new exciting watches from their other lines too.

    Great review man. I have not been into the Rolex Sub line. For some reason they look just too blah. But this watch just screams, elegant, industrial, classy and functional all at once. Great power reserve, in house movement, ceramic bezel, COSC cert, helium escape valve, beautiful dial paying great homage to the Rolex Sub while with the step in the dial, hands, no addition of a cyclops, looking classy and unique in its own rights, titanium case and quick adjustment clasp on the bracelet, are many great features that would cost you a kidney if it was a Rolex. Bravo Tudor, they knocked it way out of the park. I am going to get one of these. Never liked the Subs, they always seemed to be missing something, and the Tudor covers all the missing elements that Rolex missed.

  • @Ppf9000
    @Ppf9000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Lovely review for a criminally underrated watch. The black bay gets the spotlight, however it is the Pelagos which is truly an original model without anything homage about it. I have a 2-liner which I actually prefer due to a detail I never hear picked up in any reviews - the date window at 3 has a partial marker to make the face symmetrical which was taken out for the in-house model. There are so many little details which are fantastic, like how the hands are blacked out at the pinion so they appear floating and how it seems to be the only Tudor/Rolex model which doesn’t have the marker surrounds so it appears more like a 4-digit Rolex with puffy lume ala 5513. I also think snowflake hands should only be used with rectangular markers like on the pelagos. They do not work with round markers like the black bay. The 2-liner will certainly appreciate in value in time given the limited production run and the small but important differences. It will also be cheaper to service.

    I always assumed that if and hopefully when I indulged myself in buying a luxury watch, it would be an Omega, possibly a Rolex. I could never justify such an outlay, but back in 2014 when I got engaged, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to warrant such a purchase. Well, the lady gets a nice, expensive diamond ring, why shouldn’t us guys get something too...?!
    I went in rather blind believing Rolex were the best of the best with their phenomenal marketing and image. As most watch enthusiasts will know, in reality they are second or even third tier compared to the truly esteemed giants like Patek Phillipe, Lange & Söhne etc. That is not to denigrate Rolex, I’d effectively be denigrating my own watch and some by doing so and Rolex is an utterly phenomenal brand with such a wide range of incredibly beautiful watches that I defy anyone not to fall in love with one. The Rolex Daytona Platinum Ice Blue is my such watch and I have no shame in admitting that is out of my price range...!
    Anyway, with a budget of up to around £5k I started looking and began with Omega in confidence. While many of the watches were/ are great, when it came to one that I wanted to own, wear and pay my hard cash for, nothing truly spoke to me. The Omega Seamaster garnered obvious interest, but just didn’t do it for me, despite Omega getting much critical acclaim about their wonderful Co-Axial movement.
    A touch despondent, I then looked at Rolex, a little reluctantly as I was put off by the admittedly subjective “look at me” stigma it would bring, but supremely confident I would fall in love with one nonetheless. Yet the more I looked, the more I was just underwhelmed and much as I love the aforementioned Daytona, even if I had that kind of money, it is a bit flash for me. The submariner range came closest to getting a bite, but just as with Omega, nothing that remotely convinced me. They were a little small, flashy/ glossy and I didn’t like the amount of text on the face. And I hate cyclops!
    Utterly despondent, I began browsing all ranges. A few Tag (I know...) watches looked nice, but ultimately meh, then when all hope was lost, something called a Tudor Pelagos leapt out of the screen. I’d never even heard of Tudor... a little research and I soon learned what we all know, in very crude terms Tudor is effectively made by Rolex at affordable prices, but in real terms that does a complete disservice to the rich heritage and individuality of Tudor in its own right.
    I loved that it was largely Rolex quality, but without the albeit subjective stigma’s that come with a Rolex. I loved that it looked like a submariner, but without the glossy, flashy elements. I loved that clean face/ dial with minimal, plain text as opposed to the cluttered, confusing dial of Rolex. The matt finish of the bezel and face made it majestically understated and wonderfully legible. The lume was resplendent, the clasp with its micro adjustments ingenious. The rubber strap included (though given the bracelets ingenuousness I have worn that almost exclusively). The snowflake hands, which after some research is a nod to the historical Tudor submariners that were provided to the French navy in the 1960’s, sums up much of the wonderful contradictions of the Pelagos; a contemporary, modern watch, yet with classic, historical connotations. And I simply adored that it was brushed titanium rather than shiny steel, a big preference for me. Oh, and it didn’t have cyclops!!! It just flew under the radar which I loved and was a watch you wouldn’t be frightened to wear, a proper tool watch. If ever a watch was made for James Bomd, this was/ is it ;-)
    After more research than is probably healthy ;-) I looked in to the movement which of course is a massive thing for watch enthusiasts, probably the biggest thing for most and of course the (original) Pelagos has an ETA 2824 movement (albeit a high quality one with Tudor enhancements) rather than an in-house movement. Now I understand my conclusions will be an anathema to those that believe a luxury watch simply must have an in-house movement, but given there was little real world benefit as the Pelagos comfortably runs within chronometer specifications and some, I regarded it unimportant. It would be easier and cheaper to service and though investment potential was and is irrelevant to me, hindsight, whilst still currently subjective of course, indicates the original ETA Pelagos will be more of a collectible that the in-house 5 liner Pelagos given the original 2 liner was only manufactured for 3 years. It is also the first titanium watch made by either Tudor or Rolex. There is precedent of ETA watches, even for Rolex (technically a Valjoux as they were purchased by ETA in 1966) being more collectible than in-house versions.
    So as you can probably guess, I bought the Tudor Pelagos and am absolutely delighted with it. Over 5 years later it is losing 1.9 seconds a day (this changes in the summer to around the same but gaining). The 5 liner is a beautiful watch too, I love the blue version, yet as per my stated enthusiasm for understated, non-flashy watches, I admire it yet wouldn’t want it. And I certainly prefer the 2 liner to the 5 as to me the original Pelagos is noticeably different to any Rolex which was a great allure for me, the 5 liner and the lines, pardon the pun, become more blurred. The loss of the marker at 3 is another negative on the new version, but which ever version you have, the Pelagos is amazing.
    I’ve never quite understood why the Pelagos doesn’t garner far more acclaim, even playing second fiddle to the Tudor Black Bay, albeit a fine, wonderful watch in its own right. Maybe one day it will be remembered as it deserves to be, but in the mean time I will enjoy wearing it and admire its understated majesty every single day.

    Got mine recently and I can’t be any happier with it. The LHD replicates a vintage model launched in 1969 (Oyster Prince Submariner 7016), the red accents and the beige luminescent make this watch unique. The ceramic matt black disc and titanium combination make this the perfect beater watch. The case number is ~18k. The only thing I don’t like, is the massive clasp. The outer part of the sharp clasp could make it dangerous when on the wrist. The movement has been consistent with -2 seconds per day.
    Don’t think about it too much, you will love this time piece or piece of jewelry…what ever you are into.

    The spring loaded clasp is to wear over a neoprene dive suit. The idea is you keep it a bit tight as you start the dive, so the spring is a bit extended, because your neoprene sleeve will contract as the pressure builds, and the spring can also contract and keep the watch snug.

    The crown guards are asymetrical with the slightly longer shallower slope offers more protection to the upper part of the crown closer to the crystal. It also prevents the guard points from digging into the skin on your wrist/back of hand when your hand is bent back towards the watch like when you are pushing something away from you. I might be wrong, but thats how I see it.

    Nice review. Personally, I don't mind the writing on the dial at all. For me, the purpose of a dive/tool watch like this is to be able to SEE it when diving. The dial is very readable and the snow flake hands are extremely easy to see. I find this watch to be a perfect example of a dive/tool watch and I can't wait to own one. I keep trying but can't find anything wrong with the watch, but I cant. My struggle is whether to get the blue of black. LOL..

    Great review ! I own a blue Pelagos . Different opinion I like all the text on the dial . I was going to buy a Rolex Sub but liked the look of the Pelagos better and the new manufacture movement . I am a certified scuba diver and its very legible in the water . BTW I traded a Panerai 005 which I purchased new from my local authorized dealer. I was very disappointed in the Panerai it needed service under warranty 3x in 2 years of ownership - within a month the crown would not wind the watch . After service it started to run 20 minutes fast a day - back to Panerai in Texas it was returned running 30 minutes fast a day ( this was with the basic ETA movement which I assumed would be as reliable as a VW beetle) . I was done with Panerai and traded for the Tudor 1 year ago its run perfectly just like my 1984 Rolex Datejust ( orig owner)

    Put it on My wrist absolutely fell in love with it for all the reasons you mentioned. Was ready to pull the trigger
    On this bad boy. (My wife would have had a fit ) but really you only live once. And with my grandson egging me on lol. The AD who is a friend said wait a minute. Came back with another Pelogas. 2016 ETA..at $2600 looked
    Spotless.. no difference in feel or fit. I put in on with one hand pulled the trigger with the other. Told my grandson
    This will be yours .I hope you don’t mind the lengthy comment. Their are some who are jumping ship to the MFG movement. And it’s awesome no doubt. But the collectibility of the ETA IS Not here yet. I’ve had my bad boy for a
    Month and can tell you it’s absolutely the bomb as far as tool watches..My suggestion if you want to save money and still get in my opinion the best diver tool watch look preowned for the Pelagos ETA now more available at a great price.

    Simply the best looking , understated diver on the market , perfect size 42, satin finish, square markers, no faux patina, only thing Id change is the date window, remove it., pick it over a modern sub in a heartbeat. Tudor as respectable as rolex, with out the parinoia that comes w/ a ROLEX crown $8000 watch on your wrist, getting jacked is far less likely with the TUDOR.

    Great review! Thank you. I concur. The only thing I'd change would be the silly amount of text on the front. So odd for such a highly designed piece. Such a shame. Hopefully this will correct course on future updates.

  • @jamesshepherd343
    @jamesshepherd343 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The two things that he would change were not present in the original watch with an ETA movement. It only has two lines of text and is 14mm thick not 14.4mm, so it is just a little bit thinner. It's amatter of taste I guess as some prefer an in house movement over a stock movement.

    Unfortunately Tudor's greatest attributes are simply some other watch's great achievements. Also true for the Chronograph- a legal copy of Breitling Navitimer's B01 movement - that's the highest form of flattery.

    Its clear that whoever designed this watch has thought about the design and wear comfort very well, this is no bullshit display cabinet piece, it is a proper workhorse.

  • @oes2546
    @oes2546 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    How bulletproof are these movements? I'm to be honest not that hugely into the idea of luxury watches, but this one tempts me. However, I would have be to quite certain that it would take anything I'd throw at it. If I'm spending this much, I don't want to feel like I have to use my Promaster instead when going back country skiing etc. Then I might as well keep the Promaster as the main watch. Thing is though, I don't feel quite confident enough on the toughness of mechanical movements. (And I don't want to pay $5k or so just to find out) I'd feel much more comfortable splurging on a "one/final watch" if I knew it could take anything. A GS 9F would probably make me confident in that. But they have no models with the design and features such as this Pelagos. Would love to hear from someone who really, really put it through its paces, what that was, and whether it could take it or not. But maybe I'm delusional for hoping that a mechanical watch can be treated harshly like a true hardcore sports-watch.

    I love the luminous bezel as it truly makes it useful under all lighting conditions. I wish the GMT did the same....oh well....The excess verbiage could have been toned down considerably as you say. PELAGOS, CHRONOMETER, & depth rating. That's all the marketing it needs at 6 o'clock and balances the logo etc. at the 12 o'clock side. But....I'm SURE designers, Marketeers and management argued about this and this was the odd compromise? Or maybe just some idiot's mandate. Everything else is near perfect except that. What a weird screw up. Near perfect video too. Well done!. Thank You!
