    A fantastic documentary that pulls together all of our great achievements in submarine design and construction. The combination of poetic narrative, original footage and musical links enhance the story like nothing else could. Educational, historical, evocative and highly entertaining. A gift to the people of Barrow past and present. A shipyard and town to be proud of.
    Congratulations John and Sally, inspiring work.

    A beautifully crafted piece of work all round, in my humble opinion. The obviously impeccably researched historical information, the editing of the available visual material, along with a stunningly lyrical poetic script, and appropriate narration; this is certainly the genre of documentaries coming into a new style and age.

    Absolute superb film/documentary. A passionate and concise summary of the history of submarines in the town. Very well done JR. Beautifully narrated and some of the imagery from days gone by is wonderful.

    Great documentry and a great unique styl of narration. Barrow built my first and last submarines, Oberon & Courageous, out of the four I served on (in) during the 70s & early 80's. Barrow boats where always considered the best boats, and so proved to be too. Like eveyrthing else though, the longer peace reigns the less politicians think we need submarines and the skilled people that build them...

      Exactly sir! Keeping the peace doesn't come cheap does it.Infact it's very expensive.But it's a price we'll worth paying in my opinion.

    What a FABULOUS film. I've recently moved to Plymouth and have for some reason been doing a lot of research into the journey of the dismantling of the decommissioned subs, pretty much all of them featured in your documentary. I started to feel quite emotional as the documentary progressed and seeing their beginnings and knowing that 15 of them sit in retirement in one of the docks at Devonport just down from where I live.....waiting...... and to see HMS Swiftsure who is now in her final stage of dismantling (disposal sounds too harsh).

    That was very impressive. I'm totally awed by the enterprise and ingenuity of those who make these vessels. Long may they continue to do so, because the baddies are still out there and we need our defence.

    And once again the name of "Upholder" is left out of the Barrow story !! Proud to have served on her from first build to decommissioning, a fine boat.

    • @renniecreative
      @renniecreative  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Upholder-class sure are fine boats, and provide an interesting story that perhaps deserve their own documentary. We never set out to, and we were not tasked to, include every submarine the yard has ever produced although we somehow covered the majority. There was already a lot to cover in the 80s section so I took the decision to not mention Upholder for the reason that it was a diversion from the main narrative of the nuclear submarines' evolution. When Canada has finished with Upholder, I would love to see it return to Barrow one day as a tourist attraction - a top choice with it being non-nuclear. That would be a great end to the Upholder story and a reason for it to have its own documentary. We can dream can't we. Thanks for your service, Sir.

    You never realise just how much of a submarines hull remains under water even when it's running on the surface, I was doing some contract work at Vickers in 1993 when we saw Vanguard sitting on that ship-lift and it looked massive, the next day we went past and the sub was floating in the dock and actually looked small compared to the day before.

    Grandfather, Father and numerous uncles and their wives worked at Vickers in Barrow. Shipyard fodder as described in Uncle Maurice’s book.
    Brilliant documentary but just one small correction. The original A class submarines had petrol rather than diesel engines and were rather hazardous to operate. The A7 lies at the bottom of Plymouth Sound , intact and home to some rather large conger eels.

    Great video, great accents but the poetic prose of the script is more often than not kaka... I don't profess to be Betjeman, Byron, Clarke, Colridge, Larkin, Wordsworth or Zephaniah... But.... Just stick to a standard vo script if this is the best you can do.... DOH!! 😮

    Great documentary and fine poetry. Perhaps the the narrator could learn to say "nuclear". instead of the George Bushism of "nuclyear". "New Clear" not "Newclyar".

      Google says it's nyoo-klee-uh...is this what you were getting at? (That's with the British pronunciation option selected)

      Saved me posting (almost, lol). It's new-clear not new-killer. Sorry, it's a trigger, like professional narrators saying FurnESS instead of FURness. You'd think they'd get someone who could pronounce nuclear considering it's kind of likely to come up ;) Otherwise, really enjoyed it, very well put together and loved the scripting, if not the pronunciation of one word ;)
