  • A driver's eye view of the line from Machynlleth to Barmouth and Pwllheli. This was recorded in the summer / autumn of 1993 (I think) from the cab of Derby Lightweight DMU M79900 Test Coach Iris. There is a commentary mentioning features along the line such as stations, level crossings, mileposts etc. It is as recorded except where I've edited out a couple of long stationary waits!

First did this journey in 1961, last did it 2018. Never fails to inthrall. Introduced my wife to central and north Wales in 1969 ( we are from Nottingham) and she loves it too. Wonderful visits in all seasons for 50+ years

Very enjoyable video, and so good to see the driver's eye view having been on the train so many times 1963 and 1964 holidays when I had a weekly season ticket with unlimited travel, and repeat journeys many times since. To reply to another comment, the commentary is noting vital line knowledge including mileposts which the driver must know to be able to safely operate the train in all weathers. And in the event of any kind of incident be able to give his exact location to control. Many thanks for uploading

I used this line a lot in 1996 when I worked at Butlins. You couldn’t see it from the cab video, but seeing the rollercoaster come into view was the marker for getting ready to get off the train.
I have some very happy memories of that time.

@@nawbus I've shared it to my Facebook page. At one time I lived in Pwllheli and had friends in Mach. I made the journey every weekend together with my cat. When the train was quiet, usually in the late run from Pwllheli to Mach, I'd let the cat roam. On one occasion, on a sunny October afternoon in 1970 I met a tall well-dressed American who was exploring the trains and the UK. Much later on I realised it must have been Paul Theroux.

I love this video. I wish you could do it again in reverse direction. In 4K. I don’t want much do I?!
I love this route, I love Harlech, I used to holiday at Talsarnau every year, love the ride from Pwllheli to Barmouth. This video is basically every holiday I had as a child.
Cheers for the upload. And WOW do you know that route! 👍🏻

Brilliant video and route-learner commentary. Pity that the recording doesn't pick up the driver's RETB radio conversations with Mach signalmen. RETB basically saved the coast line from closure in the 1980s and the system passed into history with the ERTMS resignalling about 15 years ago. Beautiful scenery... and some 400 level crossings on the Cambrian - little wonder that linespeeds are no higher today!

I loved the video but very sad that you had a day where it was not very good weather.. I would like to know if there is a video of this ride with the weather sun like a real summer day then you could see a lot more of this wonderful coast..

I guess it was just to highlight the locations. I'm not sure if my Dad can remember the reason for this and the other two trips, but I will see what he remembers!

Is there a similar one recorded before the mechanical boxes were abolished? The earlier, the better. Better still with telegraph poles in situ. The trouble with this is is that there are no significant railway landmarks.

    • @nawbus
      @nawbus  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm sure BR would have made similar videos over the years, especially before the line was converted to RETB.
However, I only have these videos because my Dad was on the train and he somehow ended up with the tapes!
I do know that Video 125 videoed the line from Machynlleth to Barmouth in 1988 while the classic signalling was still in place.

Are drivers supposed to know all the names of crossings etc? Or was he reading them off a sheet

    • @nawbus

I don't think so. From what my Dad remembers (he was on the train), it would have been from a sheet / route plan.
