- I'd like to say a big thank you to Claire and the booking office staff for their help in making this video possible, along with the locomotive crew and everyone at the Ffestiniog Railway, past and present for all their hard work that has given future generations the wonderful visitor experience we see today.
Porthmadog Harbour station is the starting point for both Ffestiniog Railway and the Welsh Highland Railway trains, resulting in busy periods at the start and end of the day when trains return to be stabled overnight and locomotives run across the Cob to Boston Lodge works where they are maintained and prepared for their next duty. On a sunny evening it's hard to think of a nicer place to enjoy a pint than at the railways very own pub and restaurant where the railway action can be watched from the outside seating area.
Trains use both sides of the long island platform and a walk to the end is rewarded with stunning views all around as well as being a great vantage point to watch trains crossing the Cob (the wall separating the sea from the Afon Glaslyn flood plains). Our locomotive has coupled up to its train and we are ready to set of on the picturesque ride to Blaenau Ffestiniog. I could write a book about the views from the train window, but until such time, please join me on a scenic journey through beautiful Wales.
The railway holds a special place in history for a number of reasons, it is the oldest surviving railway company in the world, being built by the "Festiniog Railway Company" spelled with a single 'F' in the act passed to allow construction to start in 1833 with the line opening on 20th April 1836 . The 13 1⁄2 miles (21.7 km) long line was built on a continuous downhill grade between Blaenau Ffestiniog and the port at Porthmadog to transport slate from the quarries to the port for onward shipping. Loaded waggons used gravity to run down to the port with the empty waggons being hauled back to the quarries by horses that had ridden down hill in special waggons called 'dandy waggons'.
By the end of the 1850's it was clear that more capacity was required leading the board to investigate the possibility of using steam locomotives, the outcome of which was the placing of an order with George England and Co for two narrow gauge 0-4-0 steam locomotives, the first, named 'Mountaineer' was delivered on 18th July 1863, followed a few days later by 'The Princess'. After running in trials and some modifications they entered service on 23rd October 1863 allowing the use of longer trains to increase capacity and in 1865 they enabled the introduction of passenger trains, making the railway the first narrow gauge railway in Britain to run such trains. The first double Fairlie articulated locomotive was introduced in 1869, these locomotives are now one of the most widely recognised features of the railway.
By the 1920s the railway suffered a gradual decline in traffic owing to slate being replaced by modern materials and the loss of overseas trade during WW1. Ordinary passenger services ceased on 15th September 1939 and slate traffic ended on 1st August 1946. The act created to allow the construction of the railway made no specific provision for its closure, thus another act was required to repeal the old one, as luck would have it, the company didn't have the money to do so, as a result the track was left in place to be reclaimed by nature. The abandoned railway attracted railway enthusiasts and eventually with financial help from Alan Pegler the next chapter in the railways history began resulting in the first train of the new era running across the Cob in 1955.

The coolest thing about this preservation line is that it is no zombie; I actually used it to go somewhere. Visited "The Village" a Km walk from Minffordd and connected with BR at the end of the line. Take note USA, The Britts can still out railway us.

The Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railways have to be my two favourite narrow gauge railways.
I agree, I am very lucky to live in a country blessed with so many excellent heritage railways.
I thoroughly enjoyed the train ride through the Welsh countryside. It is truly a spectacular scenery. Although I may never be able to travel to that part of the world, your video certainly brings it home to me. Thank you for another excellent production of yours.

I have been on this train pre covid with my late beautiful mum and my late beautiful dog . We had a Welsh afternoon tea ( they don’t do them now ) which was so delicious including my favourite bara brith ( sorry if I have spelt in wrong ) . I loved every minute of the journey . Very special memories. I stay in Borth Y Gest twice a year and have walked the path next to the train with the stunning views . Last year I went on the train up to Bedgellert. ❤❤. We are so lucky to be able to travel on this spectacular steam trains . Thanks to all the phenomenal volunteers. I am back in Borth Y Gest on September 9th for 2 weeks , every moment there is absolute heaven . ❤
Hello, I'm sorry to hear that your mum and dog have passed on, but from what you write you have wonderful memories of them. Pre Covid I took my wife on both the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, travelling in the observation Pullman carriage at the back of the train, the cream tea was the icing on the cake, it's hard to think of a better way to spend an hour of two. The view from the houses along the water front at Borth Y Gest is stunning and the footpath along the coast to Porthmadog is one of my favourite walks. The railways of Porthmadog make it a very special place, even the British Rail service along the coast is spectacular and the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway is well worth visiting. It's amazing to think that without the volunteers freely giving up their spare time, Porthmadog wouldn't be the vibrant place it is today. I bet the 9th of September can't come quick enough. IT'S THE SOUND!! Turn up the amps and sit back and listen to the sound. Having the camera with it's built in mike attached up front was great. The sound of that engine as it travel along is mesmerizing. I had the pleasure of travelling on this railway about fifth years ago. Nothing has changed, a lovely memory. I made the round trip from the Blaenau Ffestiniog end back in the early 1970's a trip to remember.
Hello Richard, like you I love to hear the sound of a locomotive working had. This railway has matured into one of the best known tourist attractions in Wales, it's a real credit to the folk who bought it back to life all those years ago and to the staff and volunteers who keep it running today, plus there is now the added bonus of being able to catch a train to Caernarfon from Porthmadog Harbour station. I'm glad the video bought back good memories from your own time on the railway.

Last time I did it was as a kid in the early 1960s, when the line terminated less than half way up. The countryside looks a lot greener than I remember it then.
Must go and do it again.
Hi, when I first travelled along this railway, it finished in the middle of nowhere, today it's a very different story, it goes somewhere and can be used as part of a through journey to stations on the Conwy Valley line and beyond.

I made this exact journey back in late September 2012. It was a beautifully clear Autumn afternoon, I remember the scenery being absolutely stunning, and what a privilege to be transported by a real piece of history, truly a brave little engine! We owe a huge debt of gratitude to everyone who cares for, maintains and runs these wonderful trains. Happy memories of my first visit to Wales 😊
Hello David, without those dedicated people, these wonderful railways would only exist as pictures in books and magazines. It's so much better to see and hear them working, much as they did back in the days when the slate industry was still thriving. I'd like join you in saying a big thank you to all those who one way or another contributed to the survival of so many delightful Welsh narrow gauge railways, they really put Wales on the world's tourist map.

Hello John, I'm glad you enjoyed the video, the forward view gives a better idea of how tight the clearances are. Did you do the complete trip in the 80's? If you get a chance to return, it's worth travelling in the observation carriage at the rear of the train, the views back down the valley are stunning, especially at sunset on an autumn day. I have a good number of Welsh 'Driver's Eye View' videos to upload over the coming months.
I know I took this train in the early '90's, but remember virtually nothing of it anymore. About time I started planning a re-visit! Such incredible scenery, unbelievable.
Over 30 years ago is enough to cause the best of memories to fade. One thing hasn't changed, Wales is still awesome and now trains leave Porthmadog in opposite directions with the opening of the Welsh Highland Railway. If you do visit again, I think you'll find it an enjoyable experience.
What an amazing footage! The angle of the camera gives us the impression we're on one of those miniature, backyard railroad trains! The pleasant sound of the steam engine is good quality music to my ears! At last I’ve been on a journey on this World renowned railway👍👏
I found out about this railway when I joined my local Model Engineer club in the early ‘70s in Johannesburg.
Ran my own 5” gauge 0-6-0 at the club hauling passengers every Sunday.
That moment I steamed it up for the first time, opened the regulator and felt what ‘small’ 1” pistons could pull thrilled me!
The smell of smoke, seam and oil mixture got into my blood stream, activated a dormant gene and I was hooked.
So hooked was I,that I started my own Model Engineering shop supplying all the needs to build locomotives , traction engines & IC engines.
When I told my parents of my plan my Mom’s eyes went wide and she told me that her father worked for the LMS, something never mentioned before.
That gene awoke with a vengeance and an experience never to be forgotten and treasured.
Hi, that's a lovely tale, one I concur with. I am a toolmaker and as part of my apprenticeship I made a simple "O" gauge steam locomotive, I was also a member of my local model engineering club where I got to drive a 10 ¼ inch gauge 4-4-0 steam locomotive that once ran along Bognor Regis Pier. One of my father's relatives was station master at Appleby station on the Settle to Carlisle railway, another worked on the abandoned APT project, railways are a part of my genetic makeup. I'm glad you enjoyed your virtual ride the world's first narrow gauge heritage railway, who would have guessed at the time this railway made history that so many would follow suit, the UK is a awesome destination for lovers of all things steam.

I've heard the expression 'God's Own Country' used for several places but this would certainly have to be one of them. Glorious, to say the least.
God was certainly on form when creating Wales, even in the rain it is stunningly beautiful.
First rode 1961, never tire of watching or riding. Last rode 2022 hoping to go again soon!

Have been doing up my old Camry 2002 not a spot of rust at all. Fitting good exhaust manifold and front pipe. Simple computer system central locking and engine management.
Well stay well and 25 mph train journeys are my speed. Chuckle. Lovely job they did. So nice to see these classics restored and running; good on them. Something to treasure and enjoy.

Toyota make good cars, I drive a 20 year old Nissan Xtrail, it still looks and drives like new, at first the Japanese copied Western cars, then they made them even better.
Twenty five miles per hour is a nice speed, it gives passengers plenty of time to enjoy the pretty Welsh countryside.

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I watched the deviation route being built over a number of years, it was a very special day when trains began running to Tanygrisiau, although it still took another two or three years before they reached Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Just found this video wow fantastic I did this trip May 2023. The poor coal man started off pure white when we got to FFestiniog he was unrecognisable to put it words it is ok to say he was the same colour of the coal. The scenery beautiful the train chugging along the whoo whoo every thing brill about your great video thanks. I got the coal man & the driver a cool fresh orange juice & a chocolate croissant each to help keep their energy levels up for our return trip. I say every body must have a trip on the Porthmadog line it truly is an excellent day out. We will be back this month September to do the other routes from Porthmadog & can't wait. Thanks Tim & Porthmadog station staff also the cafe is really great.
Hi Helen, I enjoyed reading your account of the trip you made on the Ffestiniog Railway, I'm sure the fireman and driver appreciated the refreshments you provided. I always look forward to visiting Wales to ride this train, it is one of my favourite heritage railways along with the Welsh Highland Railway, the volunteers and staff are so welcoming and friendly. I think you'll really enjoy riding the Welsh Highland Railway, especially the Aberglaslyn Gorge. I like to start my day at Porthmadog with a coffee and a bite to eat whilst watching the trains being prepared for day ahead.

Thanks for posting this! I got to ride this very line 2 months ago during my trip to Wales. It's neat to see it out the front this time. I remember the conductor on-board mentioning and showing that there is a cabin you can rent that runs alongside the track and the only way to access the cabin is by riding this line (no road).
Hi Phil, I hope you enjoyed your visit the Wales, not quite the Rockies, but never the less dramatic in its own way with the added bonus of a fascinating history, the reason there are so many narrow gauge railways there. The driver gets the best view !!! I think the holiday cottage you mentioned is Coed y Bleiddiau, a couple of passengers flagged the train down in this video.
@@Timsvideochannel1 The thing I loved about Wales was all the passenger rail and narrow gauge infrastructure. In the Rockies there's really not much rail transport infrastructure to get around, you pretty much need a private car. As it is in most of Western Canada.
@@TransCanadaPhilHello Phil, Wales is a Beautiful country with a fascinating history and considering Dr Beeching closed most of the railway system, it is still possible to get around on the train. I caught the Canadian across Canada in Mid Winter, it was an amazing experience. Canada is a big place, not really suited to Welsh style narrow gauge railways. Did Canada once have more railways, my knowledge of Canadian railway history leaves a lot to be desired.
@@Timsvideochannel1 Yes we used have a lot more passenger rail pre 1980s. Both the Canadian Pacific Railway and Canadian National Railway ran passenger services back then. In the late 70s a new government owned Crown corporation called 'Via Rail' operates the remaining passenger lines. There's only a few services running but there are always talks about 2 possible corridors for high-speed service in the future; the Windsor-Quebec City corridor in the east, and the Calgary-Edmonton corridor in the west.
@@TransCanadaPhil It's a pity so many passenger trains have been cut from the timetable. I did see one train I'd love to travel on, it was waiting at Jasper one January day, it consisted of a diesel locomotive a dome car and a beaver tailed dome car. I later discovered that it ran to Prince Rupert, I would dearly love to travel on that train one day. Canada would suit high speed rail, but it will have to go some to compete with air travel, big cities several hundred miles apart are best served by high-speed trains because they can run right into the centre, rather than serving an airport on the outskirts.

Ah, excellent. It’s six years since I was able to assist in the downhill trip!! And you did well for request stops. I haven’t stopped at Plas Halt on the up since before The Plague 😱
Hello Roger, as it was about six years ago since I posted a down hill version of this trip, I'm guessing you were part of the train crew on that day. I don't think I've ever seen the requests stops used before. The plague grounded me for a couple of years, I'm making up for some of those lost trips now.
@@Timsvideochannel1 yes, I was driving that day. Didn’t realise it was as long ago until I went looking for the clip. It’s quite rare to get even Dduallt these days though we get Coed y Bleddiau quite often though tend to be forewarned about pick ups there! All good👍 👌

This was my first trip back to the railway since that visit six years ago, I won't leave it so long next time. It's a real pleasure to visit the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, the volunteers and staff are always friendly and helpful, I never tire of the views from the train window and with the promise of more locomotives entering traffic soon I've got plenty of reasons to return. @@Jack-jh2to Thank you, I could easily find the the maximum speed permitted on the Welsh Highland Railway, but I never found the limit for the Ffestiniog Railway, I wrongly assumed it was the same.

Have many happy memories of childhood holidays at nearby Criccieth. I came remember we went on the Welsh Mountain Railway - but not this one - may not have been in operation then! On my 'bucket list' to go back there again, add this trip, and the Snowden Railway to do when I do.
Like you I have happy childhood memories of family holidays spent in Wales and buying tea towels with pictures of the "Great Little Trains of Wales" on them to give as gifts. Happy Days. If you do get back to Wales, you'll be spoiled for choice, there is nowhere else like it for narrow gauge steam.

An excellent video to follow on from the one posted a year or so ago going in the opposite direction from Blaenau. This time travelling from Porthmadog on the upward gradient most of the way though, there is the added bonus of the noise of the engine working hard to pull the train up the hill. Last time it only had to coast back down.
Shame about the rain towards the end obscuring the camera's view but then I suppose it is North Wales

Minffordd station has a mature tree ON the platform! I'm a 66 yr old railway enthusiast and I've never seen that before.

You are probably correct, the reason I use the term 'Driver's Eye' is to indicate that it is a forward view, also the TH-cam algorithm picks up on 'Driver's Eye View' whereas it ignores 'Forward View'. I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😊.
Beautifully filmed travelogue with impressive speeds notched up, especially uphill! I guess construction of the reservoir drowned the course of the old line into Blaenau - but I'm interested to know where exactly the present line reverts to its original route. The start of the deviation is pretty clear - at 49'15. Does it rejoin at 53'10, or further along than that..?
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The reservoir flooded part of the original alignment which has been replaced by the new route between the Blaenau Ffestiniog end of Tanygrisiau station 07:59 and the Blaenau Ffestiniog end of Dduallt station 19:38

@@Timsvideochannel1 Yes but Coed y Bleiddiau is not a halt in the normal sense. It is a private cottage hired out to e.g. holidaymakers by the Landmark Trust and is quite a distance from any road; being thus accessible only by the FR or long footpath. Kim Philby lived there for some time,

Glad you enjoyed it. It was filmed with a GoPro 11 and I've just taken delivery of my new GoPro 12. On the day the light was very difficult, I don't know of a suitable camera that can cope with bright cloudy skies, rain and dark shadows at the same time. The better the lighting conditions, the better the footage.
I didn't think one could get a Driver's Eye View with a narrow gauge steamy, but you've shown that it's doable. Could you achieve it with a miniature gauge engine?

"Yes", out of respect for the Welsh I have given the name in both English and Welsh, it just happens that Ffestiniog is the same in both languages, although in the act to allow the original construction of the railway 'Ffestiniog' was spelt with one 'F'.

Did this in july, beautiful. But i noticed its right hand running but i couldn't get an explanation. I have theories but no answers.
I hope you enjoyed your trip as much as I enjoyed mine. I looked on the internet for an explanation for right hand running without success. The gravity trains required a free run through the stations and loops, it could be that it was easier to create a better alignment on the right, generally on the up hill side or it could simply be that as it was so early on the scene there was no precedent at the time.
@@Timsvideochannel1all the trips in Wales were very enjoyable. As for theories the alignment was the best I could come up with the idea that the points are sprung forward on all stops although I had never thought of it being too early to not be normal.

1:05 A bit on the wet side! One big drop of rain on the camera lens ruining the shot for the last few minutes of the video. Pity there isn't something us videographers could get to guard against water on our lenses.

I wasn't expecting that much rain, otherwise I would have coated the lens with the stuff you put on car windscreen to make the rain run off more easily. It only took one big drip to give me a real problem 😪.

I think I have been able to figure it out for myself from the whistle tone - David Lloyd George. Great video, I have watched up to Tan y Bwlch so far where there is plaque in memory of my Dad in the memorial garden by the water tower. The sound is awesome, usually on such videos when there is a loud sound like the whistle, the auto-sound cushioning kicks in and everything goes quiet for a while, but not on this. I will watch from Tan y Bwlch to Blaenau Ffestiniog tomorrow.

bei den darstellungen sieht man die zylinder immer waagerecht...einige dampfschiffe auf dem vierwaldstätter-see (schweiz) wurden auf ölbrenner umgerüstet, um die russentfaltung/ verqualmung der umgebung zu vermindern....noch heute fahren diese schiffe und es ist intressant, wie der antrieb funktioniert...

Hello Robert, 'Forbes Gauge' might find its way into Wikipedia as the infinately variable narrow gauge. The Ffestiniog Railway, like the Severn Valley and Bluebell Railway were part of my childhood, my parents would take the family to see them whenever we were nearby, sometimes we'd even get to ride them if family finances allowed. Those early visits to railways were the spark that made filming railways my life long hobby. I find it fascinating to see my old photos showing my kids when they were knee high to a grasshopper tagging along behind a hippie in shorts (Me) at various heritage lines when the rules were lax and it was easy to get up close to the engines in the depot. Happy Days. One of the Blaenau slate quarries reopened after the 1987 hurricane that swept through Britain leaving many houses without a roof, I think the quarry is still in operation today. I'll be backing England in the cup, I'm working today, so I'll be watching the highlights tonight although I will have the radio on at work. Cheers. Tim.
