pretty much everything in gen 1 got shredded by psychic types. Im fairly sure fat mons like Snorlax and Taurus were kind of the best counter you could get outside of other psychic types.
I can see this being like a series, go through each of the gens, ranking the pokemon Ash gets in each of them, then the fun part of not only making the best OU team of the new Pokemon her caught, but also an OU team using all the ones he has caught at the time.
While we never saw Ash catch Mr. Mime it is officially counted as one of his Pokemon, and he did eventually use it in battle in Journeys. I assume if you had counted him he would've made the cut instead of Muk (or Charizard in the Haunter team?) so that he'd have some Psychic protection.
I don't really count Haunter as protection from psychic. I just did a fire red run and had one on my team. Psychic still does super effective damage against it due to it's poison typing.
I think for future gens itd be interesting to add one additional section in the end to ask: Which tier would Ash actually have the most success in? Who knows, maybe he has a killer RU team in one of the later generations
this is such a fun idea! I want to imagine it'd be even funnier if you end the episodes with you taking the team and running a single OU match from that generation on showdown i think it'd be funny to see it in action, and kellen's battle commentary

So, technically... has caught a Mr. Mime in Kanto. It was an offscreen capture, since after the capture of Mr. Mime (Nicknamed Mimie), it stayed with Ash's Mom. This STILL has yet to be shown in a flashback or confirmed by word of mouth, but is assumed due to ALL THE WAY LATER, in Pokemon Journeys, Ash used Mr. Mime (Still going by the nickname, Mimie) in a small Tournament battle, and Ash sent it out from a PokeBall (Which is what Haunter lacked to make it official), and Mr. Mime listened to Ash's Commands in Battle.
I think it’s more interesting to go to the MOST liberal version- so all mons from all seasons, and full evos for all mons. With that, I think the team should be: Gen 1: Gengar, Snorlax, Mr. Mime, Lapras, Tauros, Dragonite The whole team spamming Hypnosis, Thunder Wave, Body Slam in prep for the Dragonite Wrap sweep! lol

On Snorlax, Amnesialax was the special variant that Ash could use. But again, since Ash still uses Snorlax in Johto (aka Gen 2), we gonna get a massive lecture on Curselax, which I never get tired of hearing. This series is going to teach us that if Ash evolved his Pokemon, he'd have a competitively viable team and that they wrote Ash as inept for too long.
I hope for future gens you keep ranking the pokemon from previous gens. Otherwise the gen 2 video will just be ranking noctowl, heracross, and (potentially) donphan.
this was a fun as heck video. Something about Gen 1 is just so magical. The anime, the cards, the sprites, the wacky mechanics, the glitches, the designs, Man take my boomer ass back. Even Pokemon Go in 2016 was a huge Gen1 tidal wave of feels.

Here's a crazy thought and maybe this could help: What if, instead, Snorlax was a Special built? It does have access to Amnesia, one of the more broken moves in the game. Since his Pokemon is lacking on the Special department defense wise, Snorlax could switch into that. His only problem would be facing the Alakazam with a high crit ratio, but it would still put up a fight overall.
You make fun, but there's a Smogon warstory where someone won a Gen IV OU match using Ash's Orange Islands team. Yes, including the NFE Pikachu, Squirtle and Bulbasaur alongside Tauros, Charizard and Lapras.
I feel I have to make a correction regarding how much fighting type sucks in gen 1. It's not only the presence of psychic types in every team that makes them bad in OU, it's that they also suck at the one use you could hsve for them, beating the 3 normal types that dominate the meta. They just can't, there is no good fighting stab that isn't exclusive to Hitmonlee in gen 1. The only thing you can hope to kill is non-reflect Chansey, but since your only stab is Submission, which has recoil damage, you're dead after using it against the mon with the most HP in the game. Most Pokémon in OU have an easier time dealing with the Big 3 than fighting types do, and they do so while having other things to offer. Fighting type is just pathetic.
I was checking to see if someone else had left this comment. I didn't see it yet, but I'm sure this won't be the last one either. For Charizard's set, having a high crit chance and slash is definitely a boon, but it does not synergize with Swords Dance. For anyone who doesn't know, in Gen 1, crits ignore *all* stat modifications, including ones that would benefit the critter. Thus, a SD boosted crit does the same damage as one without SD. I'm adding this as the video can be read as saying this combo does a lot of damage "if given the chance to set up". I think it probably means that this combo is good, and in addition, Charizard has other moves that are good with some setup.

The thing that surprises me the most about this isn't where certain mons ranked... but that he only had that few during Gen 1. My man had to catch'em all and he caught like 14.
I mean, Ash has Gengar and Dragonite now so now not only is the Haunter question resolved (and upgraded) now Ash gets to partake in wrap shinangans (though I can’t imagine Ash, let alone indigo league Ash having enough patience to pull off a full wrap)
Fun idea! Some things though. I get it. Gen 1's not the channels strong points. But some of these discussion points are a bit unknowledgable or even in some cases severely outdated. The one that made me hesitate being the constant statements of Psychic types ruling the OU tier and making sure Fighting types don't appear which..isn't as true as it is made out to be. Genuinely. If Machamp had any good fighting type moves. You'd find a way to get it in there. Issue is. Theres no good fighting moves. Right now Machamp runs low kick. Poliwrath barely if ever runs submission because its just not worth it. And thats all the fighting type moves in gen 1 not found exclusively on Hitmonlee that use your pokemons stats. The issue isn't that Psychics exist. Its that fighting types don't. But really the reason i say its outdated logic is calling Snorlax part of the big "four" unfortunately..Exeggcutor isn't as needed as it seemed a few years ago. And i do mean years. Its been Snorlax, Chansey and Tauros for a long while now. Exeggcutor is still great. For sure a top 6-7 pokemon. But isn't the universal requirement it was seen to be. And normally i'm not super on this for FSG standards as normally you're just recapping them then at that time, not talking about current day what they do in the metagames today. But this is a video only about gen 1. What they'd be doing in a gen 1 tournament today. And i'd hope a bit more accuracy in that kind of statement. Still a fun video, just nitpicking as someone who enjoys playing older tiers and seeing people talk about them.
I don't believe he's suggesting that psychics are the best Pokémon or anything like that. They're just really good, and if you're unprepared, they can seriously destroy your team. I'd liken them to ADV Gengar or Salamence in that sense. They're not having as much influence over the tier as Tyranitar, but failing to prepare for them can certainly have a significant impact on your experience. (I'm not a professor on competitive Pokémon, so correct on anything wrong.)
Charizard should NOT be combining slash with swords dance. Gen 1 crits completely ignore boosts, and slash's whole deal is it basically always crits. Charizard should be doing something else with its swords dance.

Its been Snorlax, Chansey and Tauros for a long while now. Exeggcutor is still great. For sure a top 6-7 pokemon. But isn't the universal requirement it was seen to be. And normally i'm not super on this for FSG standards as normally you're just recapping them then at that time, not talking about current day what they do in the metagames today. But this is a video only about gen 1. What they'd be doing in a gen 1 tournament today. And i'd hope a bit more accuracy in that kind of statement. Still a fun video, just nitpicking as someone who enjoys playing older tiers and seeing people talk about them.
I don't believe he's suggesting that psychics are the best Pokémon or anything like that. They're just really good, and if you're unprepared, they can seriously destroy your team. I'd liken them to ADV Gengar or Salamence in that sense. They're not having as much influence over the tier as Tyranitar, but failing to prepare for them can certainly have a significant impact on your experience. (I'm not a professor on competitive Pokémon, so correct on anything wrong.)
I can only hope this is a new series that goes through each generation, because this was a lot of fun

Charizard should NOT be combining slash with swords dance. Gen 1 crits completely ignore boosts, and slash's whole deal is it basically always crits. Charizard should be doing something else with its swords dance.
True, but Slash gives it immediate boost without setting up and bypasses Reflect.
