The first season kind implied Ash's Pikachu was special and more powerful than an average Pikachu. Seasons later, I guess the writers forgot about this.

Breloom and Lycanroc are barely relevant in gen 7 OU, and weavile probably misses the OHKO. Pikachu is no Pheromosa, but priority is at a pretty major low right now, which helped push it into Ubers. It would be at least a niche pick.

The Gen. 1 secret for Pikachu: Teach it light screen and reflect and then evolve it because Raichu couldn't learn a lot of moves or TM's. Mega Kick or Body Slam were also really good with Pikachu, and then Thunderbolt.
Gen 8: Absolutely no use in singles (obviously), but in doubles, G-Max Pikachu could do absolutely nuclear damage AND support its teammates at the same time with its devastating Light Ball-boosted G-Max Volt Crash.
I was really hoping you would talk about the guy who top cut vgc Japan nationals in 2016 with a level 27 pikachu. He only brought it to one game but in that game he won the 1v1 against a xerneas with sash endeavour feint

I don't play competitively but just from a single player perspective I remember always trying to catch one in Gen one to help deal with Misty and to fry the endless waves of Zubats early on, but as soon as I could replace him with Jolteon I usually did. Pikachu is useful at the beginning, and it's nice to have an electric type around early, but there much better one's later on.

I honestly tried using Raichu in my XY play throughs. Literally took it off my team not long after. XY is one of the easiest Pokémon games, if not THE easiest one. Yet, Pikachu still sucked. I wasn’t even planning on using it competitively.

Pikachu was freaking amazing in BW2 Ubers' metagame with Lightning Rod + Light Ball. All you had to do was put in Kyogre vs. Kyogre, predict that obvious Thunder, switch to Pikachu and OHKO Kyogre with Thunder, Groudon with Grass Knot and just wreck all kinds of havoc, most of the time, your Pikachu would be able to land huge hits on set-up sweepers too, as opponents wouldn't really pay mind to Pikachu's powers and think of it as an easy set-up, leaving pokemon like Rayquaza (HP Ice) and Arceus wide open. People just never really gave it enough thought... sad story
And then gen7 came along and completely ruined its Fake out+feint niche due to psychic terrain. And also legendaries were banned so pika had NO niche at all. Plus it is super risky to go against Kyogre since a speed tie could be possible(in case of max speed variants).
Pikachu used plot armor. All of pikachus stats magically increased. Pikachu used thunderbolt. A critical hit. Its not very effective. Foe mega rayquaza fainted.
If I recall correctly (it's been so many years since I watched pokémon) evolving fast gave it a speed disadvantage somehow. Also for plot convenience pikachu found a way to resist thunder attacks that episode (the lighting rod ability was not invented yet). Not knowing all the moves would make far more sense w.r.t. the games, but raichu had a moveset that would easily win that fight. Honestly pikachu beating raichu was the most bs gym battle I've seen outside of the Pewter city gym fiasco. Still remember some idiotic classmates being convinced that pikachu was faster and better than raichu based on that episode.
Chaos Sorcerer I've been watching it lately and you are correct, Pikachu used agility to gain a speed advantage and its tail as a ground for Raichu's electrical attacks. I have no idea if electricity can be nullified that way but the determining factor seemed to be moves, I'm pretty sure Pikachu learns new moves as it levels up but Raichu doesn't. It's kind of funny how Ash didn't always battle for his badges but got them for other acts too, such as fending off team rocket. Still, out of all the pokemon series I've seen it has been the most similar to the games when it comes to details like the ones used in that episode.

Pikachu is actually pretty solid in tiers below UU, Light Ball is really good and it can learn icicle crash with the custom pikachu cosplays. Covering Ground and Grass. It is probably safer to set up sticky webs to assist Pikachu. But it can put in some work, at the very least it will deal massive damage or wallbreak something if used correctly. Just don't switch into an attack or it'll get run over, it faints at the nearest sneeze.
Styling on people with Pikachu is very fun, no one can deny that. It actually has something that is good at, with Fake Out and Extreme Speed it has access to 120 total power uncontested damage against faster frailer mons coming off of 458 Attack with Light Ball. Ghosts wouldn't dream of switching in because of Knock Off and Volt Tackle. It obviously is minuscule niche and is not even remotely necessary but if you really want to use Pikachu, it can atleast do this much.
Imagine if they went on to have Clefairy as the iconic Pokémon. Clefable has been a OU juggernaut for the last few generations, and even Eviolite Clefairy has had its day in the limelight (moonlight?) in the lower tiers. Surely a better fate than the yellow rat.

If you mean using Z-moves, no. Don't even bother trying anything other than the Light Ball.
Since the Z-moves require Pikachu to NOT hold Light Ball, they actually don't outdamage Light Ball boosted moves by much, if at all.
Pikachu was freaking amazing in BW2 Ubers' metagame with Lightning Rod + Light Ball. All you had to do was put in Kyogre vs. Kyogre, predict that obvious Thunder, switch to Pikachu and OHKO Kyogre with Thunder, Groudon with Grass Knot and just wreck all kinds of havoc, most of the time, your Pikachu would be able to land huge hits on set-up sweepers too, as opponents wouldn't really pay mind to Pikachu's powers and think of it as an easy set-up, leaving pokemon like Rayquaza (HP Ice) and Arceus wide open. People just never really gave it enough thought... sad story

And then gen7 came along and completely ruined its Fake out+feint niche due to psychic terrain. And also legendaries were banned so pika had NO niche at all. Plus it is super risky to go against Kyogre since a speed tie could be possible(in case of max speed variants).

Pikachu beat Lt. Surge's Raichu because he made it evolve before it knew all the moves Pikachu can learn
If I recall correctly (it's been so many years since I watched pokémon) evolving fast gave it a speed disadvantage somehow. Also for plot convenience pikachu found a way to resist thunder attacks that episode (the lighting rod ability was not invented yet). Not knowing all the moves would make far more sense w.r.t. the games, but raichu had a moveset that would easily win that fight.
Honestly pikachu beating raichu was the most bs gym battle I've seen outside of the Pewter city gym fiasco. Still remember some idiotic classmates being convinced that pikachu was faster and better than raichu based on that episode.
Chaos Sorcerer I've been watching it lately and you are correct, Pikachu used agility to gain a speed advantage and its tail as a ground for Raichu's electrical attacks. I have no idea if electricity can be nullified that way but the determining factor seemed to be moves, I'm pretty sure Pikachu learns new moves as it levels up but Raichu doesn't.
It's kind of funny how Ash didn't always battle for his badges but got them for other acts too, such as fending off team rocket. Still, out of all the pokemon series I've seen it has been the most similar to the games when it comes to details like the ones used in that episode.
Chaos Sorcerer No, I think the Tate and Liza battle in Hoenn was worse. Pikachu used Thunder on himself AND his teammate and they gained "Thunder Armor". What a load of fucking bullshit.

Pikachu is actually pretty solid in tiers below UU, Light Ball is really good and it can learn icicle crash with the custom pikachu cosplays. Covering Ground and Grass. It is probably safer to set up sticky webs to assist Pikachu. But it can put in some work, at the very least it will deal massive damage or wallbreak something if used correctly. Just don't switch into an attack or it'll get run over, it faints at the nearest sneeze.

I think it is cool that pikachu was never really strong in game. It got so much treatment and bullsh*t plotarmor in the anime, it makes me sick.
Styling on people with Pikachu is very fun, no one can deny that. It actually has something that is good at, with Fake Out and Extreme Speed it has access to 120 total power uncontested damage against faster frailer mons coming off of 458 Attack with Light Ball. Ghosts wouldn't dream of switching in because of Knock Off and Volt Tackle. It obviously is minuscule niche and is not even remotely necessary but if you really want to use Pikachu, it can atleast do this much.
