  • A deceptively technical project, this assignment calls for tactile awareness (wall and floor thickness), form control, and a sensitivity to clay timing/moisture.
    Keys to success
    1. Start with around 1lbs soft moist hockey puck shaped clay.
    2. After making a hole in the center w/ your thumb, bend your thumb into a hook and slowly twist the clay on your "hooked" thumb. Flex your thumb, don't hurt yourself!
    3. Slide your thumb from the inner corner slowly up the wall to the rim, then compress the rim. Skooch your thumb over a bit (half a thumb width) and repeat all the way around.
    4. Compress the sides keep the pot walls vertical! Don't let it get away from you early!
    5. Use the 90 degree angle on the wooden triangular rib to establish the inside corner of the cylinder. The corner is where most peoples weight is.
    6. Straighten the exterior with rib, and put the clay scrapings off the rib into a ball, to make into a coil latter.
    7. Wet, score, compress coils on rim, and then bend DOWNWARDS to achieve strong adhesion between coils and pot. Blending upwards can sometimes be counter productive to coil adhesion.
    8. Compress the sides and rim, and keep the pot walls vertical.
    9. Enjoy!

Thank you:) I love your vids. It's just sometimes the fast forward is too choppy and fast, and your hand blocked most of it.

This is so inspirational! Thank you! How do I keep the outside from cracking?

If you keep the clay compressed with your fingers and or a rib, only a minimal amount of water is needed for moisture management. Only about one finger tip of water should be needed, periodically.

So if you watch the half sphere pinch pot video it is at a slower speed and I use the same thumb slide technique.
