My instructor spoke often of a true real life knife fight scenario. He told us one thing. There are no winners in a knife fight. Someone's either gonna get cut, stabbed or killed. I recently saw a video on TH-cam where they took 7 young Martial artist experts specialized in Kung Fu, Kara'te, MMA, Brazilian jui jitsu, krav maga and Philippines Kali escrima.
It wasn't a self defense video. It was an actual trauma physician shooting the video for awareness for trauma combat physicians. He wanted to see which martial art system stood up the best against a real amateur knife fighter. The attacker used a Giant red magic marker to simulate an actual knife attack. An amateur knife fighter rushed each professional fighter with the Red marker with real life threatening stabbing techniques. The Red marker was used to document killing blows. Each Red Mark could symbolize an injury or killing stroke. Not One of these high ranking so-called combat fighters could defend against real life knife attacks. The Red marker stained their faces and bodies with fatal blows. The doctor made a reference to each fighter afterwards that they were lied too during their training as fighters. All of the fighters had excuses why their techniques didn't work. The doctor said,"Then you should have spent your lives learning how to survive in a real knife fight rather than defend yourself with techniques that don't work or pretend and lie to the public that your techniques are superior in a actual knife fight when they're not against an amateur knife fighter.
Not an actual real knife fighter. Because not one these professional fighters survived a knife attack against an amateur. Your decision is correct PAY ATTENTION STAY AWAKE AND ALERT
KNOW WHERE YOU ARE AT ALL TIMES THE BEST DEFENSE IS TO NOT FIGHT AT ALL. BUT PREPARE YOURSELF FOR ANYTHING

No such thing as a knife fighter that isn’t dead or in prison. Not possible to get “real” experience.

@@raydrexler5868 To much faith in the police, I grew up in an area of the UK where the Cops never bothered if we stabbed or Cut each other. At a guess, I would say at least 50% carried, and more today. In my day it was mainly Cut throat razors, someone who uses a blade learns if not on the internet today, it used to be his family or mates, and with Knife fighters, you never see the blade, usually first slice wins, but today they are using the sowing machine technique more and this is disgusting but they sowing machine you're ass out so you're stuck for life on a colostomy bag. You have to assume that what looks like a punch is a Knife or razor coming in, I learned the hard way, and got my thumb cut-off, but I was at work, as a Trainee Engineer in a conference center. What these guys teach is real, just saying it's worse than you think.

I agree, and have used similar training methods. We used to use retractable stage knives with lipstick on the hilt so only a fully penetrating stab would leave a mark. I have handed one to a guy with no “experience” and had him attack a guy who claimed to. Killed him in seconds. I stand by my statement that no one who is alive and free has real knife fighting experience. I also stand by your statement that self defense is not a fight. I’m not gonna stop training in as many different ways as possible to close the experience gap. I’m just over 40 years of martial arts training in my 52 years and the best unarmed against knife training I’ve gotten was from a former corrections officer. They have a lot of experience in the matter. I grew up in a shipyard town in the 70’s and 80’s and we had a lot of street fights. I carried a knife, and I got cut twice, but I never pulled my own knife in a fight. I still don’t leave my house without a knife, and often my concealed carry firearm. I have little faith in the police to do much more than take down the details after. I mean, who tries to rob or kill somebody if the cops are around anyway? Thanks for the response, good stuff, be safe.

@@raydrexler5868 Yes, we did too, plus aluminum knives, plastic and foam, depending on how well you were trained or committed. I also Fenced and quite a few of us used to play with knives, a good way to train knife fighting, with a mask on and throat protection collar.

I have Story to share. During my 5th Dan test were asked to defend asking a knife. When it was my turn, the person took a forward grip and began approaching me with the knife a backed and ran. One of the testing members told me me that wasn't good enough. I did it again. I told them I saw nonpoint in putting myself in harms way. Oh well!

Thank YOU Prof. David & Shihan Ken once again.. I will be keeping it real and say that the methods and even more so, (pay particular attention to the "message" and not just look for the techniques) "the principles" that these two masters showcase in their video's WORK!! 110% !! Trust me.. Years ago, actually saved my life! And , it was a good thing I was wearing dark colored shorts too. Lol. Because when multiple (3) attackers suddenly ambush you and the steel blades come out.. FEAR has a new meaning!! Thank God the police happened to be driving by that particular moment and shined their spotlight down the alley. Yes, I got cut!! Have the marks on both hands to prove it too. Not a time for bravado, but real fear. Mastering one's emotions is easier said than done. When faced with the REAL POSSIBILITY of death, your body tenses up, and even muscle memory is put to the test. To all who read these comments: I am living testimony that the principles and methods that these two gentlemen are putting forth DO WORK. Many Blessings to everyone this holiday season.

Knife = my extra thick, extra heavy belt buckle are coming out quicker than a whip. It gives me the space to still inflict deadly pain while maintaining a safe distance. The key is having the proper defense belt that can be deployed lightning fast.

Professor David, I can't agree more with what you said at the end, but the System/Cops have forced the Martial arts into this coma state of teaching completion Arts, who today teaches the real inside meaning of the kata, and I prefer drills and Freestyle sparring. The problem is where are these clubs today, it's illegal in Canada to advertise or teach real self Defence, if a prosecutor gets a hold of information that you did any preparation to defend yourself, you become the offender, some say you'll get off, but getting charged wrecks your life, I'm an old age pensioner with a more serious disability than it appears. I grew up in one of the world's toughest areas, but we had our own standards, no elderly or women and children, today you're just stabbed, and they take what they want afterwards. I still train at 70, it's stick work now instead of kicks which I was good at. I enjoy your channel I've been subscribed since I first saw it and it's of great use to me reminding me of what's real, straight-forward and useful. It's tragic that at my age, you're no longer left alone, but that's life today, two old ladies were recently killed in broad daylight in a town where there was no crime two years ago, federal legislation changed all that helped by the usual array of bloody do-gooders. Thanks for your video's their of great assistance. Thank you.

Sensei is upset, feel that. He's telling the truth. I spent about 35 almost 40 years of training, and when I started asking real questions, my instructors will get upset. They didn't have the answers.
How do I get this self-defense course. I have a base, that's real, if I find myself in a situation I want to go home.
I don't want to sit there and play pitty pat, tag, sport karate, I'm going to get it over.
Don't want to be in that situation, but if I do, get it over with.
    Thank you

IF you have time and space to access them, your shoes or belt, held in your hands, can be pretty effective against a knife man. If you have a heavy coat on, you are reasonably protected from slashes at your arms or torso. that MIGHT help you, since you know that he's more likely to stab than slash and his slashes might get snagged on your clothing, giving you the chance to eff him up. However, his thrusts are more likely to be lethal than the slashes. The thrusts are slower to take effect, but more likely to result in your death. You can apply pressure or a tourniquet and stop blood loss from a slashed arm, but a stab to your vital organs cannot be helped short of massive surgery, which you'll probably die before you can get.

Professor is a title/rank given in BJJ (and a few others) to those who have achieved a black belt and also have been a black belt for at least three years - and most importantly, they also teach. It is not to be confused with being a "master" who knows all and is above all others. Other systems also use the term professor, teacher, or coach. Professor James does not claim to be a master (although he also has that title he does not use it or demand to be addressed as such). Professor is simply his earned rank/title in the system he learned and teaches.
