Great stuff! Judging by comments I've read on various boat channels over the last year I'm guessing that at least half the viewers might be people like me toying with the idea of their first boat, so this is great. I love to watch the more expensive stuff but it's good to get a mix of both, plus getting an idea of real world costs is extremely useful. Cheers!

I have a caravan up in the Lakes, apart from fuel there's not that much difference cost wise. Personally I'm new to boating, I'd have it dropped off in Windermere and just cruise gently round the lake. "And now, we'll look at her many quirks and features." I definitely enjoy seeing boats that are actually relatively affordable, cheers.

To me boating in UK seems way more expensive than I'm used to here in Finland. I own a similar size (and priced) boat. Berth cost is less than 1000€ (= 700€) and mine is in a Marina that is quite expensive in finnish standards (200 m away from Metro station in Helsinki capital area). Incurance roughly 1000€/annum. Service 1000€ (Volvo certified) and other costs 1000€. In addition I have to strore mine in a warm hall during the Winter months (frozen sea). That adds 2000€. For winter storage there are less expesive options for as well. Summary. My fixed annual costs for a similar size boat in Finland are less than half compared to UK. That is a big diffrence in my opinion. No wonder boating is quite popular here. And they say Finland is an expensive country.

Very useful. Just one comment on depreciation, retail might not change but if i paid £140k at retail and sold it back to you 1 year later, you'd need to keep some margin, so i would lose something. £5-10k?? So i'd still consider that in my depreciation calculation.
I'm curious, as I've never driven or captained a boat, what qualifications or licences do I need before I even buy my first boat? Of course I am responsible but will you really just hand me the keys and say off you go have fun? Great video again. You're the best!
You don't have to have a licence but I would recommend some training such as Powerboat Level2 (uk), you will need a Vhf marine radio licence available through ofcom (uk) to be legal, also Vhf radio operator licence from the RYA. Which involves training and written exam and practical exam, don't be put off by it though. Both courses are great fun and from a safety point of view a must imo.
Thanks James, another good review. Like seeing the costings etc as always helpful. I reckon you could insure this a bit cheaper (I pay £800 on a similar sized boat worth not much less). For prospective owners if you’re prepared to compromise a bit on where you keep her you should see a saving over the £6k for berthing as well. Fuel costs on this definitely cheaper than mine though which has twin petrol outboards 😳. Look forward to the next review
Loved this video.. Informative as always. Question... If one wouldn't Charter a boat like this, then How much would a boat of this size be to HIRE for a day / weekend / Week ? When buying a boat is out of the question, Hiring would be the only option for a lot of people, my self included.
I do kind of like this boat it not bad for a first boat, if I win the premium bonds I would get it without two thoughts I think I would have it at Canvey point by Canvey yacht club I think that water is deep enough for it

I'd disagree that Bavaria is an entry-level brand. In their size class, they're far from the cheapest. They're solid mid-tier. Would take a brand-new Finnmaster T8 over this one though. Even smaller, but more modern and space-efficient.
I've never given any bad comments on your tours James, if you are a seasoned boater like myself, we look past the uncleaned state of the boat's interior, this will be rectified before the boat is handed over to the purchaser! Another great tour James despite the cameraman's phone keep going off, how unprofessional of him!
If you are going to own a soft top boat you best keep it on the UK or Northern European coast. In the med it will fade and you’ll be cleaning Sahara sand off of it. On the river you’ll be scraping off mould and ingrained pollen every spring. Happy boating 😂
Yes I did Howard 😂 but that was 2 years ago. The market is always evolving and we pride ourselves on moving with it. I think Bavaria make some great family boats at affordable prices and I think that’s good news for buyers coming into the market. Happy to say I was wrong when I said that 😊
If I was selling that boat I would sand down the table and varnish it. Make it look better. I can't afford anything like that but if buyers see the boat in its best condition then the thing will surely sell for best price. Tatty wood is not a good selling point.
Hi jimmy - I agree. We sometimes have a large volume of incoming boats (sometimes 30 per month) and we are still a small team in Essex (15) so it’s on our list 😎
@@Boatscouk also, you hitting your head was funny. That aft cabin by was ok for a boat that length but care is needed when moving around in it. I would use a boat more than 50 hours a year. Based in a Clyde marina, I would want to go out most summer weekends. I have access to a sailing boat, a 36 ft, but just fancy motor cruising. Too expensive to run on current diesel prices, though I could afford to buy one.
