Thank you for the video. It helped some in replacing starter on a 13 F150. 1/4 ratchet is definitely the way to go. To get to the top bolt a 4” extension would’ve been perfect, but sure enough I don’t have one. I ended up with a 1/4” 13mm socket, with a 1” extension, 1/4” to 3/8” adapter, 3” extension and was able to get it off and back on pretty easily after I puzzled that together. Of course that was after 30 minutes of frustration because nothing fit.

Took me 2.5 hrs to get starter out. Still not sure how I ever loosened that top bolt. Tried every combination of extensions available. Nothing wanted to work. No room up there. Almost gave up. Ground down a small socket to make it 1/8-1/4" shorter with a 6"-3/8 extension and that seemed to do the trick to loosen the bolt. Then took it out with 6'' 1/4 drive. Install was a little over and hour. As stated below when installing put a piece of tape over top hole, drill a hole in it and insert bolt. This will hold in place till you tighten it. Good luck to all that try this. On the hardness level I would rate this a 8 or 9, but still saved me around $350+ doing it myself.

Tip for that difficult top bolt. I used masking tape to attach the bolt to the socket, then taped the socket with extension to the starter before stabbing. Install the lower 2 bolts then push the upper bolt it. It simplified what I was dreading as I was removing it.

Update: got the new starter installed and it starts like a champ now, no more whining solenoid and failed starts! Had same feelings when the alternator went out last summer on it... why did they move it to bottom of motor with coolent and trans cooler lines in the way of getting it out... id rather work on my 67' f100 than the new design motors. Thats why i stick to HVAC work to make a living. If i had to work on motors for paycheck i wouldn't enjoy working on motors.

I have 2011 F150 5.0 4x4, so same build as 2014. My starter is doing the opposite.. The pinion is not disengaging with the flywheel in a timely fashion after the engine gets running. I think a new starter is also in my near future. After seeing this video, I was surprised that the starter comes right out without much hassle. It would appear that the passenger side engine mount is too close to allow the starter to come out of the bell housing.

After 30 minutes I came back and it hesitated a second or two and started right up. Today it started fine. It has 109,000 miles. Could this be a bad solenoid or could the starter be frozen in cold weather?

My 2011 decided to blow the ignition switch fuse in -20F, two times. Replaced the fuse and switch itself both times, and the battery once. My starter has a skip in it now or something, won’t crank unless I tap it with a pry bar or something comparable. (Ignition switch was this past winter in interior AK) I’m not sure if this has been compounding causing the starter issue. If I fill the truck up with fuel to the brim it will sit and crank for a few seconds then stop and then I’ll try to start it again and it’ll crank up. Odd, but I guess I was naive or something with that issue, hopefully a new starter will do the trick, May keep an extra on hand just like my spare ignition switch😂 good luck!

Misfire on back cylinders, but not just on back cylinders, is likely from compression loss due to a worn-out intake valve. Verify by a leak-down test, hearing leakage at the throttle body. It doesn't need a short block--it needs a valve job.

@@JONDAVIS111 yes, i replaced my starter. It was a pain in the ass removing the three bolts holding the starter, especially putting them back in. I bought my starter(duralast) at Autozone. Haven’t had any problems with it ever since it was replaced, about a year ago. It took me about an hour to replace it.

Compacted for decades with 1 ton trucks, tractors, and farm equipment. Lot of granite and gravel compacted into it just under that dirt/grass.
