Two tips I always give to people, new or veteran, is to carry seeds on you at all times. Not only will they come in handy when you finally get a farm set up or are playing as Wickerbottom or Wormwood (who gains Sanity when he plants things) they last for ages and are easily acquired via birds. This makes them a great Emergency food for if you're out exploring the world and run out of meatballs and have wandered too far from home. Another tip is that I set up a flower garden in my base to spawn butterflies, butterflies make exquisite filler for Meatballs and are the healing potato chip of Don't Starve. They feed you and give 8 HP a pop! Not to mention they are a decent way to spawn Krampus, collect Souls (if you're playing as Wortox) are required to make the Glossamer Saddle and farm for the ever elusive Butter. Granted this farm will not work in Winter but that's where ice comes into play or any reserve berries you haven't yet picked from your bushes yet. 3 out of 4 times of the year the farm will always be up and spawning butterflies. CTRL+F is the key to punching the butterfly. (Unless you tinkered with your key bindings then Idk what to tell you) To catch butterflies you will need a bug net (2 silk, 1 rope, a few twigs under the Survival Tab) you catch them then hold them in your mouse cursor. It will say "Plant" when you however over suitable terrain. (You cannot plant butterflies on made mad turf. E.g: Wood flooring, Carpeted flooring, etc. If you want to you will have to dig up the turf with a pitchfork, plant them, then put the turf back on the ground.
I always make one of these but I realized that the less flowers and more people the more butterflies spawn, but you want more flowers if you plan on having bees in your base then you should do a lot of flowers
The biggest game-changer for me was learning that I could catch spiders in traps. Also, very early on, I played my own game and restarted the day every time I died, that way I learned how to fix my most costly mistakes. Finally, don't worry about being perfect. There are different kinds of gamers, so if you need to alter the game a bit to enjoy it, that's perfectly okay. :) Great vid!
3:49 I like having my camera at one specific angle, but rotating your camera is important so I just got a mod to reset my camera angle to default with the push of a button
It's always good to look back and reflect what you did wrong. I pick Woodie at my 1st ever playthrough, and I had NO idea what happened to me. I dun even know I eat wood.
I recommend to new players: increase autumn to long Practise killing nightmares in a new world as wigfrid Kiting pattern is: dodge attack, attack, repeat Therefore you have enough time to prepare for winter whilst also not having to worry about nightmares Get gears by digging graves or collecting tumbling weeds (not smoke able)
It depends on a lot of factors. I like the following mods: - Geometric placement - Realistic placement - Camp Security (for managing privacy and people hammering or burning my stuff) - Plants Cluster (for planting in blocks, I hate planting one plant at a time. It is more expensive since not only require the dug plants but a % of the resource). - Smart Minisign (it automatically puts a minisign with the imagen of the first element inside it, I use it when I play with people I don't know, who usually ruins the order of the items) - In case of playing with extremely newbie people, I use Campfire Respawn, so they can respawn quickly and stop draining my sanity because the were killed by a tallbird or some shit. - Shipwrecked turfs/Hamlet turfs/Craftable turfs/Pastoral Style/Farmplot: for crafting turfs and other decorative stuff (does not change the mechanics of playing at all, but I like having a nice looking base!) - DST Greenhouse Supplies, adds a horticulture tab which adds the posibility to use planters... to plant plants. I like it, because it adds a whole new gameplay by allowing users to make a fully fledge sea base, by having crops. It is expensive, slow, not for early game. I don't use it to grow caves plants though! - QM Chests. Adds a quantum entangled chests, which allows users to "teletransport" items from one chest to it's counterpart. I configure the mod to be hard, meaning it is hard to get the blueprint, very hard to make every chest, and also to drain a lot of sanity, making it only for emergencies. - Quick drop: To drop items right in the same spot I'm standing. This helps me to put statues in the right place. For design purposes only.
What I do when I play this game 1. Gather resources and camping outside for few days 2. Make base/fire etc 3. Find food recourses, dig it and plant (make sure you have Guano) 4. Farming Silk 5. Go into sinkhole/ wormhole 6. Explore and more resources 7. Died on winter (every f time)
just made it past winter for the first time by basically making everyone else stop playing until it was over and scrimping by on our very limited food only to find out spring isnt much easier
Just started playing this game on Apple Arcade and whoah am i overwhelmed. I love the game and exploring what everything does has been fun so far! Thank you for making a video that taught me more than I expected. This game is so layered and deep.
Please make a mid-game guide. Mid-game is for people who haven't defeated fuelweaver yet but have cleared all or some of the ruins. You can focus on animal farms (spider, bunny, pigs, hounds) and how to deal with deerclops/bearger on a regular basis.
haha I knew you'd bring up geometric placement, ive seen your ocd in the hamlet playthrough. I actually kinda like having a little asymmetrical farms and plots, adds to the "homemade" feel sometimes Great video m8!
I met the channel thanks to dst season 6 RoT, and i really miss a guide to the ruins/ rush ruins. I didn t find any good videos of how to do it, but only a good video from jazzy telling why to do it. Also thanks for your videos, they really helps a lot.
"Let me know what you are having difficulty with".. (Rant) Well ok. With my mate. I really have difficulty with my mate. My mate is unreliable to the point of parody.
I don't think I'm too keen on the grass, twigs, bushes digging and replanting strategy though. Although it may be a good temporary solution for getting enough food in the early game it's really bad in the long run. You basically waste all your time in arranging all those things that are eventually going to get diseased and turn into rot and twigs indefinitely. That if you haven't turned off diseases though. In your case it is a nice strategy, but I wouldn't really recommend it to new players who haven't mingled with the world settings. What I'd do is chop down as many twiggy trees as possible and replant them in my base - they don't wither and give you twigs automatically. Besides, upon chopping down a fully grown twiggy tree you get 2 cones and you can grow your forest as time passes. Regarding food, farms are a good source for a controlled production of dragon pies, and dragon pies give you 40 hp each at the cost of only one fruit and some measly resources you can find pretty much on the ground. That said if players feel comfortable enough fighting spiders they could use tents and glands for health restoration and completely dump the farms. Getting a fridge, even 2 is pivotal early on. Forget berry bushes, mining enough ice can be enough for you to be good for a year or two ahead, because ice doesn't spoil. You can make the game spawn icebergs by walking along the edge of the map during winter. Seriously, if you don't have diseases turned off and your grass area isn't enclosed properly don't bother planting bushes, twigs and grass, it's a horrible idea. Everything else is as good an advice as it gets :)
Honestly, I would recommend to anyone new to the game to turn disease off to begin with. I really hope that it gets reworked in future but right now, it is not a mechanic that adds anything to the game and as such will never be using it in any of my worlds. And even if disease was enabled, I would still be transplanting grass as it's one of the most heavily-required resources. Having a decent supply nearby is invaluable and that would also let you look after it in summer with a flingo. Twiggy Trees I can make my peace with if you want to go down that route. Besides that, I do agree that ice is ultimately better than Berry Bushes in the long run but for starting off, Berry Bushes are a really easy way of getting both meat and filler. This is a beginner's guide after all. Some players are still struggling to make it to winter to get ice. I do find it very interesting how other people play the game though. Some of the things you mentioned are ways of playing that I honestly don't even consider much anymore. Sometimes I even forget that disease exists tbh. I guess that's one of the best things about DST. It allows for such a broad range of play styles :)
for new players, don't use weapons in first slot like this video tip. Have a stack of twigs in first slot, or grass even. Frogs or hanging wines for example will take the first inv slot and remove the item, but if it's a stack of something, will only remove one of the items in the stack, so you only lose one twig instead of a whole weapon.
@@raydil2281 fanboy. If I wanted, I would find every single time demon lost his weapon due to frogs and wines. And this was new player tip, you saying this wont happen to new players? I have invested 600 hours + in this game and constantly play with new players, and they always ALWAYS drop their weapons. It's fine, I understand preparing for hot keys, but don't fucking call it beginner tips then. And btw, you can perfectly fine NOT have weapons in slot one and still do end game content and hotkeys and setup. Just saying. Fanboy. Gonna unsub anyway, been with demon since he was a small channel, where he actually just chill and play. Now he tryharding for clicks and complain, I'm out.
@@raydil2281 It's probably better to just change the hotkey so that 1 = inv slot 2, 2 = inv slot 3 and just put a dud item in slot 1 which you'll never hotkey press since you've changed the binding.
If youre playing on M&K you can click a spot across a body of water and you'll walk there automatically no matter how much far you have to walk around.
I like to build a Science Machine ASAP. Then a backpack, shovel (for twigs, bushes, grass) and hammer from that. Destroy the science machine to get some loot back. Collect flowers as you go, for rot. By the time you find a base you are ready to set up.
@@Bluehoshiflower You shouldnt play 1 character for the sake of not having to make a science machine especially when an alch is so easy to make. Hell plus if you struggle with sanity the bonus you get for protoing those basic tools is huge.
TL:DR: I. You don't need a base by day 1, you'll be fine wihout cooking food or a fireplace. You don't even need food for the first day, and it's better to explore the entire map before settling down. II. Challenge mobs when exploring, you'll get a idea of lethality levels, and how to fight. Get comfortable with insanity and surviving in the dark. The time spent chilling next to a campfire could be spend exploring, (Unless you're playing truth or dare :^) P.S. Hot termal stone allows you to survive in the dark. III. Rotate your screen to look at the back of your character while walking so you can see more, and see behind rocks. IV. Shift-click items between inentories, contr-click for single items. Organise inventory in whatever way suits you, but know how much you have so you don't have to scour your inventory to know what you have. V. Collect a buttload of tumblewheat for early goodies you'll need anyway. VI. Use the Geometric placement mod (optional imo) VII. Plant all the berry bushes, Farms are Fugly (specifically basic farms) VIII. Get a weapon before day 8, and get comfortable with kiting.

I mean I haven't played the game in years and getting into DST with my friend has reminded me how annoying it is, everything feels wrong because the seasons change and if you aren't already doing things to prepare it's all so wasteful. Even 'surviving' winter isn't enjoyable if you just sit in camp for most of it, I like the game and want to play through all of it but it's seems so much more about min/maxing time constantly, then it is about even staying alive. You don't get to experiment and mess around unless you want to lose that run or your life if you're going to respawn and waste even more time, you have to know what to do already and then constantly be doing those things. Would be nice if there even was options to have any kind of tutorial or guidelines but based on the older article with the head guy about intrinsic vs extrinsic rewards they think it's more rewarding to die dozens of time without learning fuck all?
DST can be tough to learn for sure. There is a lot that you need to know and you risk losing it all for making small mistakes but trust me when I say that it does get easier. Eventually you will get to a point where the seasons and surviving in general are downright trivial. The years will pass without you realising and you can spend as much time as you like doing whatever it is you enjoy in the game (building, fighting, etc.) I guess, if you're worried about not being able to do anything for fear of dying and having to restart, make some meat effigies, take life giving amulets with you, or even play on an endless world so you can respawn if you die without losing the world. There's no shame in playing that way.
@@DemonRebuilt Yeah you're right there, we got a bunch of mods to make the game more enjoyable so you can respawn without flying to the spawn point every time and seeing each other on the map etc. Definitely a lot of good mods out there considering I never really ever use mods on my games, didn't really expect a reply and was more or less venting about the game but thanks for trying to help either way, you're a good guy :)

when i first started in dont starve: giant edition i took the fire rod from the the fire hounds and was so lucky there was a pig village where i was running
I play mostly single player, because my pc sometimes cannot handle multiplayer, and I can relate to a lot you've said, especially the rotation of camera. As I watched other players I begin to get better. When I start playing ROG my biggest difficulty was summer. I died every time...now I can manage but still, is my least favorite season and I always struggle to find things to do, or if I would have enough niter, etc...ugh. I also, not very proud to say, never killed a giant by myself. I use them for resources but let other mobs kill (tentacle, tree guards, etc) LOL So, this giant comment just to say: I know you're making DST content and, speaking about seasons and bosses could be some ideas for future beginner/intermediate videos. Even though I play very little I love DST content. It's fun I and feel like I learn a lot. On a side note, I'm the kind of person who watch gameplays from start to finish but I also like this new format of your videos. Thanks!
For ROG, always force an autumn start. It's stupid how they make a spring start a possibility. Finding enough ice for even 1 flingo is hard, let alone 2-3 that you might want to protect your base if it's expanded beyond that. And the dragonfly is the hardest of the giants so it's bad that a spring start usually leads to dragonfly + 0-1 flingos only.
the hardest part about this game for me is that im a coward. those hands that try to steal your fire, the nightmare creatures, even just watching my sanity go down fills me with so much anxiety that i wanna quit. these guides help though, so thank you!!
Screen rotation is a big tip I took away from this, i always wanted to keep my camera facing north for some reason, helpful to do when you actually know what north has to offer but in a randomly generated game you haven't lived life in it doesn't really matter what direction you face

I would preffer quick-drop. However, I never really played with mods so I'm not used to geometric placement- If felt really strange to me. :)
IKR my ocd goes crazy when I place things!
I play on console so I wish they added it in lol
I smell berry bushes R OUT OF PLACEMENT REEEEEEEE
Katt mine always are sadly
The biggest game-changer for me was learning that I could catch spiders in traps. Also, very early on, I played my own game and restarted the day every time I died, that way I learned how to fix my most costly mistakes. Finally, don't worry about being perfect. There are different kinds of gamers, so if you need to alter the game a bit to enjoy it, that's perfectly okay. :) Great vid!
Frogs too.
Shit. How do you restart the day when you die? Lol.
No, no mods allowed. Play vanilla or do not play.
@@spankyjeffro5320 I think OP was referring to mods. Maybe world customization

@@TGCidolfus0830 It's called Reset Camera
It's always good to look back and reflect what you did wrong. I pick Woodie at my 1st ever playthrough, and I had NO idea what happened to me. I dun even know I eat wood.
I keep watching this video because it gives me so much ideas of surviving more in DST. Thanks Demon!
Your voice is soothing.
I recommend to new players: increase autumn to long
Practise killing nightmares in a new world as wigfrid
Kiting pattern is: dodge attack, attack, repeat
Therefore you have enough time to prepare for winter whilst also not having to worry about nightmares
Get gears by digging graves or collecting tumbling weeds (not smoke able)
as a WX78 player, i can conffirm that getting gears is extremely useful.
I wish someone told me about mods especially the mini-map mod.
Just saying, ive heard minimap adds lag to mp servers bcuz it requires the server to update the map much more often
Fyre depends how much the map is zoomed in/out
@@fyreisboss767 Its a client side thing.
It depends on a lot of factors.
I like the following mods:
- Geometric placement
- Realistic placement
- Camp Security (for managing privacy and people hammering or burning my stuff)
- Plants Cluster (for planting in blocks, I hate planting one plant at a time. It is more expensive since not only require the dug plants but a % of the resource).
- Smart Minisign (it automatically puts a minisign with the imagen of the first element inside it, I use it when I play with people I don't know, who usually ruins the order of the items)
- In case of playing with extremely newbie people, I use Campfire Respawn, so they can respawn quickly and stop draining my sanity because the were killed by a tallbird or some shit.
- Shipwrecked turfs/Hamlet turfs/Craftable turfs/Pastoral Style/Farmplot: for crafting turfs and other decorative stuff (does not change the mechanics of playing at all, but I like having a nice looking base!)
- DST Greenhouse Supplies, adds a horticulture tab which adds the posibility to use planters... to plant plants.
@@chartomosfil1278 yes but i dont really know all the details but i CAN tell you it does without a doubt cause lots of lag
"Get comfortable with being insane."
Way ahead of you, chief.
The only base to setup at the starting days is the temporary one(campfire, science machine)next to resource rich areas like forests or rock biomes
What I do when I play this game
1. Gather resources and camping outside for few days
2. Make base/fire etc
3. Find food recourses, dig it and plant (make sure you have Guano)
4. Farming Silk
5. Go into sinkhole/ wormhole
6. Explore and more resources
7. Died on winter (every f time)
just made it past winter for the first time by basically making everyone else stop playing until it was over and scrimping by on our very limited food only to find out spring isnt much easier
Me and my siblings even made it to summer (but only bc we modified the winter time to be very short) and got killed by forest fire
I love this game. I have 319 hours in DST, and I'm still watching beginner guides and learning.
Don't start off your beginner's guide with end-game boss spoilers. 0:15
Don't starve beginneers guide
Saying that while fighting an endgame boss
I also wouldn't recommend digging up grass unless you already have rot available to fertilize it
Wtf, i can fertilize with rot? My God i'm so stupid 🤦🏻
Just started playing this game on Apple Arcade and whoah am i overwhelmed. I love the game and exploring what everything does has been fun so far! Thank you for making a video that taught me more than I expected. This game is so layered and deep.
The one on Apple Arcade is don’t starve not don’t starve together
@@slim3rs172 just like you
Being a new player and having only survived 15 days before dying, this helps so much.
I just started after 10 or so run I finished 22 day. Rule number 1 don't make base till day 6 just roam and remember douge method to do no hit attack.
That’s not bad
Please make a mid-game guide. Mid-game is for people who haven't defeated fuelweaver yet but have cleared all or some of the ruins. You can focus on animal farms (spider, bunny, pigs, hounds) and how to deal with deerclops/bearger on a regular basis.
Good idea. I often have people telling me they don't know what to do at this point of the game.
haha I knew you'd bring up geometric placement, ive seen your ocd in the hamlet playthrough.
I actually kinda like having a little asymmetrical farms and plots, adds to the "homemade" feel sometimes
Great video m8!
I met the channel thanks to dst season 6 RoT, and i really miss a guide to the ruins/ rush ruins. I didn t find any good videos of how to do it, but only a good video from jazzy telling why to do it. Also thanks for your videos, they really helps a lot.
hey, thanks for the tips! I'm about to start this game tonight with a friend!
Don't live in fear of frogs mate. Put your weapons where they belong.
Don't you think it's better to have 99% time set up hot keys ready rather than permamently preparing for a few frogs?
@@teipkep lmao wtf u stressing about, it's just some freaking frogs 😂😂😂. Better tip would be to avoid frogs or tell how to kite them...
Very glad I watched this video! I didn't know about Geometric Placement. I downloaded it right after you mentioned it. Thank you for that.
This review was awesome man, keep it up!!
Need more of this guides please. This was very helpful.
You can place bushes and grass to your base??? BOY! THAT SAVES SO MUCH TIME! Thank you!
Really helpful, I played the game for a lot of time, but I learned new things from your guide!
I like to build a Science Machine ASAP. Then a backpack, shovel (for twigs, bushes, grass) and hammer from that. Destroy the science machine to get some loot back. Collect flowers as you go, for rot. By the time you find a base you are ready to set up.
Pretty much this.
Or just be Wicker, lol
@@Bluehoshiflower You shouldnt play 1 character for the sake of not having to make a science machine especially when an alch is so easy to make. Hell plus if you struggle with sanity the bonus you get for protoing those basic tools is huge.
@@CFRTRams I was just joking around
I'd recommend making a spear with that science machine and a log suit if you want. You don't need a science machine for making a hammer btw.
TL:DR:
VI. Use the Geometric placement mod (optional imo)
VII. Plant all the berry bushes, Farms are Fugly (specifically basic farms)
VIII. Get a weapon before day 8, and get comfortable with kiting.
Amazing video. Short and direct to the point.
Thx for these tips, I’m planning to start playing this game, you helped me big time!

"get used to feeling insane..." - best life advice you could give...applies to the game and real life...! :)
me who has over 500 hours on dst/ds so far "Ya, I do wish I knew that. Oh well, learning was one of the funnest parts of this game anyways:D."
Me, who has never played this game npr is planning to play it: *ah, yes. An essential guide.*

I use them for resources but let other mobs kill (tentacle, tree guards, etc) LOL
So, this giant comment just to say: I know you're making DST content and, speaking about seasons and bosses could be some ideas for future beginner/intermediate videos.
@@TheDropdeadZed I know. I put autumn start as a preset world 😁

Farms should be used for specific crops, like pepper, garlic, dragonfruit. Not an early game thing though.
The thing i strugle with is a reliable food source i have had about 4 times now that i died of hunger and i have been playing for 3 days
Burn some trees. Build a Crock-Pot. Kill some spiders and get some berries/carrots. GG
Screen rotation is a big tip I took away from this, i always wanted to keep my camera facing north for some reason, helpful to do when you actually know what north has to offer but in a randomly generated game you haven't lived life in it doesn't really matter what direction you face
you can also set the trees and bushes on fire with the torch at night and then disarm your torch to not use it up
I'd love a dst character tier list and a ds one
Definitely recommend playing Wendy for beginners. Although it does make you lazy - hounds, spiders, bees, bats, monkeys etc almost become too easy!
