I've played guitar for 32 years. Bought a UKE to play around with a year ago. It was a huge hit with the whole family. Everyone wants to play it. I'm so impressed with UKE's, what wonderful instruments they truly are! My daughter has learned to play and has gotten really good. Thinking of upgrading her from the LUNA we now have to one of these in your vid. Great channel, thanks for sharing!

Bernadette Teaches Music I just purchased a Lanikai tenor and gave my Cordoba concert to a friend. Not going back, no Ma’am! Love it! I was more intrested in sound (and payability). Seemed the Cordoba wanted more string pressure even though all my ukes have Aquila nylgut. Anyway, point is, I’m happy. Great recommendation.

Hi it is a pleasure to meet you! I was so happy to find you on TH-cam. I bought my first ukulele in January for 20.00 it was a wetman soprano, I was feeling blue and anxious and the sound was so cheerful. I watch your videos whenever I can and you have brought me out of the darkness into the light. I ordered a couple online and had to send one back because the gears looked gold plastic and I could see them peeling in future. I am torn between all of these. I love the enya its been sitting in my cart on amazon for a long time. I might buy a tenor but the concert is gorgeous. I live in a small city in Canada where there really isn't much to do and all I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you!❤️

Hi Bernadette .. I have taken up the Ukelele again after many years, having ‘graduated’ to guitar when I was 16 prior to which I was playing a baritone Ukelele. Love your channel so subscribed and have just bought a Lanikai after listening to your reviews. I had forgotten what a happy sound this instrument makes so am loving the new lease of life it inspires. Thanks Mike from Melbourne Australia.

I have to agree with your final assessment. If I were to purchase one of these three it would be the Lanikai. When I evaluated on sound only, for me the Kala sound is thin. At times it almost sounds tinny and doesn't pack much of a punch. The Enya sound was a bit muddy, the differences in the notes were not as articulated. Of the three the Lanikai sounded brighter and had a much fuller sound than the other two. They all three seem like good instruments for starting out, but the Lanikai I think would be most pleasing. :) thanks for your reviews and your tutorials, I appreciate them!

I love the rich mellow sound of the Enya. It really complemented the softer strum and the finger picking. and I also really like the Kala as a really fun upfront sound especially with the faster strums. Thanks for the demo.

  • @jamesgretsch4894

I think sound the Lanikai wins but the Enya is a close second followed by of course the Kala.
For finish I love the Kala is the gloss.
For overall looks the Enya. I love the open or classical headstock and the classical guitar tuners too.
With that said I'd get the Enya. The open headstock is unique on a uke and looks amazing.

I didn't think I would say this but,,,,I liked the Enya the best.....love the slotted headstock...I would like to say the Kala but, seems like the Enya has a more mellow and deeper sound (which I like)......However, all 3 are very nice...Blue bag is cool, Like YOU! :)

Hi Miss B thank you for this video it was very informative. I agree with you on the entire package of the Enya, I love how they sound and it’s nice to not have to worry about extreme weather. I bought my Grandaughter the Lanikai Tenor based off your recommendation and it is so beautiful to look at and the sound is amazing! But most importantly, she loves it! My all time favorite that I own is my Mainland ukulele that I purchased down in southern Indiana. It is super glossy too but the sound is like no other! Thanks again! The Enya, for me, wins in every way; better gig bag, exposed tuners, strap knobs, matte finish (glossy things bother me for some reason), comes with a Spark tuner (I have one already, it's great), laminate (where I live we have extreme weather) the sweeter sounding carbon fiber strings. Amazing, thanks

Another fine Uke to consider is The Enya ETU-70 because it is has brighter sound and has a more attractive Koa laminate than the EXT-x1. The ETU-70 model looks more like real wood. Both are weather resistant and best of all the ETU-70 is less expensive. I have some experience building custom guitars so it would be fair to say, I notice the finer points of how a guitar or ukulele looks, feels & plays. In comparing over 16 Ukuleles under $300, the Enya ETU-70 one of the easiest playing and best values for a Ukulele under $100. Price not being a concern, the Lanikai featured in this video sounded and looked the best. I want to give a shout out and send lots of love to Bernadette because I learned how to play the Ukulele from her 30 Day Uke Course and her 30 Day Uke Challenge Course! Thank You Bernadette!!!

Gig bags: I also prefer the most fully padded up to a hard case; however, I prefer any bag to none at all.
Tuner: I have lots of tuners like the 1-button tuner ((same tuner, different names)). I liked the one I had just before that tuner, but it fell and broke one day. They’re okay, but for me, my Yousician app tuner is my absolute favourite.
Tuning pegs: all are fine, I do like the closed ones ((like on the Lava U)). Colour: doesn’t really matter.
Strings: I’m too much of a novice to notice differences ((but when changing strings, I only use Ernie Ball because I don’t know how to do knots)).
I don’t have an Enya yet ((it is my 2nd-next Ukulele, my next is an electric concert paddle Uke - in yellow, then Enya Nova U - in light blue)) ... meanwhile, I’m still waiting on the ((pink)) Populele 2 to arrive! I have matte and glossy, painted and stained, Mini & Sopranino to Tenor ((I actually want a QUALITY Sopranino, Sopranissimo, Nano, Piccolo, iUke, etc and they all are on the horizon of my radar)) ... and I plan to buy a DIY Uke to put together - to understand my Ukes and their parts better ...
The sounds ((and strings)) ... I did like the Carbon Fibre strings ... they did sound “sweeter,” but sound is subjective ... when I do my shows ((and mine are awful, you can look at my channel if you don’t believe me)), my different ukuleles are chosen for whatever theme or message I’m going for ... like 05 July 2020, my “Showstopper” post, where my voice blew in the middle of the song, it was about both the colours and the sound of them, because the message was not only America’s freedom, but Black-Lives-Matter ... and it is explained in the Showstopper clip.
Anway, I LOVE your videos, you ROCK! 🤘I am always looking up songs or different teachings, because as a newby, I need the simple version. I’m strongly driven and passionate about ((GCEA)) Ukes ((all MUST be tuned that way)). I was not a great pianist, I want to become better than average on the Ukes someday.

Bernadette, I was wondering how you feel about the strings on the Enya and your round one after having them awhile. I bought the Enya tenor (after watching this video a hundred times!) and I have two Lunas, a soprano and a concert, which both have Aquila Nylgut strings. The Enya's strings are a bit odd, but I love the sound. I do have more trouble fretting on the Enya and I don't know if it's just because I'm not used to the size of a tenor yet or if it could be because of the strings.

The sounds from all 3 are amazing. The only thing I really don't like about one of the three Ukulele's is the head gear adjusters. Yep, that would be the Enya. It's very different having the tuner adjusters pointing backwards to the head rather than horizontal to the head. Maybe OCD but I don't like it. They are all beautiful and I think it may be wrong to pick a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for the sake of it. Unless you really do find a favourite. You did play all 3 beautifully and the review was so unbiased.

I do not own either of the brands. I own a Fender laminate koa, Kamaka koa, Oscar flame maple, Martin koa, Luna mohagany and a off brand made of ashwood. I don't know if this is a weird thing to do but I have a question: I LOVE the look of the Kala Ukulele but I LOVE the sound of the Enya. If I bought a Kala but replaced the strings with the carbon fiber strings do you think it would sound close to or similar to the Enya?
Also, sometimes I wonder whether to buy a concert or a tenor Ukulele. Could I, in theory, buy a tenor ukulele and just drop a Capo on the strings a few frets down whenever I'd like it to sound like a concert or even a soprano? What do you think? really hope you see this comment because I want to know! lol

    My favorite will be:
Lanikai: OVERALL, for me it fits on my aesthetics, reminds me of a retro. The sound is clean too.
Enya: FOR SOUND. I like deeper sound. But I find the body too simple, but still sophisticated
Kala: FOR LOOK. I like the finish gloss its like a high end classics, a bit flashy. But the sound is kinda pitchy for me.

Love your reviews of these, I am a beginner with a Soprano ukulele but need another and a ukulele player has suggested looking at Tenor ones. Your video has helped and made it easy to conclude myself that the looks and sound of the Enya is lovely in its uniqueness. Now to see if my piggy bank has money in it :/ as being off work for last 3 years due to health and family have left me £$ 0 ( Kidney failure and transplant and looking after my 95 year old mum, 3 years) with dementia till she died in a care home 18 months ago and my dad last September)

Hey Bernadette! The Kala looks so beautiful! Am a concert lover and am thinking to buy a tenor in the future! Does the kala sound more "tight" or more "light" than the others because of the gloss maybe?

You should try installing your own buttons on one of your Ukes. I did it on mine and I Love them. There are a lot of TH-cam videos on how to do it and it is a lot easier than you think once you get over the initial fear of drilling a hole in your ukulele.

Great video. Very informative. I stumbled on to your channel while researching Tenor Ukuleles. I'm a guitarist exploring them. If you get a chance I would love to see what you think of the Gretsch Tenor. I have been playing various Gretsch guitars since 1974 and would love to know if they are any good. As far as the ones you feature here, I really like the Enya based on the sound. I know Lanikai from living in Hawaii for 22 years. A lot of guys I used to jam with played them Thanks for a good video and I will now be checking out your channel often.

    Hello
I’m just a couple weeks into my ukulele journey. I’m currently learning on an Kmise Tenor uke which is a great starter. I found myself drooling over the Enya Tenor with that beautiful wide neck, I’m wondering if there is a learning curve to the extra space between strings?
Thank you so much for all you do, without you I would still be dreaming about playing instead of actually playing!

    • @BernadetteTeachesMusic
      @BernadetteTeachesMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You will feel like there's a bit more stretching to do but I think you'll adjust quickly considering you're already playing a tenor ;)

I looked at a couple of enya ukuleles online. I really liked the soprano pineapple shape one for its price and “quality”. Do you recommend that I purchase it? Awesome video👍

    • @Dressmealltheway

Lori Dikena I just got my enya soprano pineapple in today and I like it a lot. It seems a little quiet but that's because I'm used to a concert size. I am going to switch out the strings for Aquila. I saw a review on gotaukulele.com for the circular and regular sopranos and he really recommended them because of the make... Although he said the way the string were mounted on the round one made it quieter. The pineapple strings are mounted to the body more like the regular shaped sop. Sorry for the giant comment haha

Hi Lori, I’m sure Miss B will jump on here and give her recommendation as well, but I wanted to let you know I have purchased 2 of the pineapples for a ukulele group and the quality is nothing you need to worry about. It does have a quieter tone to it, not too punchy but still a sweet sound. The set up is spot on! I can bar chords easily and it had good intonation! Good luck!

I'm just now starting to learn ukulele and using your videos. I bought a cheap ukulele off ebay and not real pleased with it. I feel like I can learn with it but going to order something better. The Enya is what brought me to this video. I love the matte finish and slotted headstock. But I really love the abalone trim on the Lanikai. That one looks like it has been discontinued though. Is the Lanikai a solid top or laminate? Thanks for the great videos.

That's cool you are Okinawan. I only have met one Okinawan in my life that I knew of. May have met others without knowing. The guy I met was named Bobby and he was a classmate in high school.
I have seen travel shows on Okinawan is beautiful and I want to go there one day.
By the way, there is a hot dog place called Oki Dog here in the Hollywood area. It's called that because an Okinawan started it years ago. See Oklahoma people are not the only ones who are Okies, you are one too because you are Okinawan.
