Hiya Baz, I've got the smaller cousin, the EUC-MAD. It was actually the second Uke I bought in 2019 after I started playing. I think you could only get them off Amazon then but it was nice to see the great Uke stores that we know started stocking Enya's not too long after. Even though it was an Amazon purchase, straight out of the box, it was very comfortable to play and still is. One of the most comfortable Ukuleles I've played, especially on that first fret when playing Barre Chords. I was a bit worried that you might not like this Uke but am pleased to see that you really don't mind it at all. I agree with you on the sound. They are a bit subdued, not much punch but it has a pleasant ring and yes the headstock on my Uke is a bit scruffy near the tuners too. Still a great Uke for the price. Nice review Baz. Thank you!

Yep - that's one of the things about Enya I like - whilst I don't like to suggest buying from Amazon, by and large Enya have the QC right - certainly right compared to some other big brands I can think of. The fact they were picked up and carried by reputable uke shops I think is testament to that. (Uke shops like to sell popular ukes, obviously, but they also HATE having to get loads of returns.)

A few of my young students have this model, and it was my first exposure to Enya. I have been pleasantly surprised. This review is my first exposure to the fact they are made of all solid wood, and so it makes better sense knowing that. I've become a big fan of Enya, and I recommend their Nova model as a great beginner uke for many of my senior students. My take on the subdued sound you mention here is this: I find gloss tops create a bit of natural compression. I discovered this comparing 2 Pono ukes, (same wood) one satin and one gloss, and that was the main thing I noticed. One of my primary performing ukes has this type of gloss finish, and while it did take longer, it has opened up very nicely from regular playing. Great review as always ~

Gloss can do that, though this is not very thick.

What are the chances you are reviewing this one today. 10 months ago I bought my very first uke and it was this one in the natural color. I didn't know better at the time and bought it off Amazon. I lucked out in a big way, as it arrived in perfect playing condition and didn't need any setup. It is still one of my favorite uke's in my collection. I now own 4 baritones, three tenors, and a concert which I purchased from authorized online ukulele dealers/stores that did full setups. The reason I find it funny your reviewing this now, is that I made the mistake of buying one ot the most popular tenors on the market, the Nighthawk from Flight. I got it in the mail 2 days ago as I have always admired the Flight brand and drooled looking at them on your channel and with other content creators here on TH-cam. I bought my first Flight the Aurora Baritone EQ-A, right after your review of it. I love it and it is my favorite uke of all time. It is much more premium than my Kala ukuleles. Which is why I am so disappointed in the Nighthawk. The Enya EUT-MAD is half the price and is more uke for your money than the Nighthawk. The Nighthawk seems much more delicate and less substantial. It feels light and the tuning pegs feel very cheap and delicate. Flight must have had some quality control issues with the batch they sent over to the Uke store I bought it from as they had 2 Nighthawk tenors, and both of them were missing the red "gems" on the bridge pins. The pins only had a flat silver disk with glue residue on it on both ukes. The store also had a concert sized Nighthawk that did have the red gems on the bridge pins. I also was disappointed how much quieter and blah the Nighthawk sounds compared to the Enya which sounds amazing. I expected a premium sound and feel to the Nighthawk just like I have with the luxurious baritone Aurora.

Whilst I never recommend an Amazon purchase - Enya in my experience are usually good to go wherever you buy. Flight on the other hand - need a lot of work on some these days by dealers,.

love that you feature this, mine is blue coloured a bit dark but all the grain is visible in light, but yeah the mirror finish does make it look black at sometimes. love from INDIA . Truely grateful.

Nice to see your take on the MAD. I got myself a blue tenor MAD back in 2019 when I decided that I really wanted to learn to play ukulele. I was looking for a quality instrument with a pretty sound that I would still want to play even after I was no longer a beginner. I remember reading somebody's advice to pick a ukulele that you wanted to pick up and play whenever you looked at it. September will mark 5 years, and I still can't resist picking up this uke and playing. I love the feeling of the fretboard under my fingers and the sweet way she rings like a bell. The teal color shows a bit of grain through it, and it's breathtaking with that beautiful gloss finish. Still the uke I reach for most.

I have the model below all solid mahogany with the iridescent flower petal inlays in the headstock. Like this one it has a pleasant sound typical of Enyas and the same volume characteristics. Replaced the Daddario strings with Martin M600 fluorocarbons and that helped increase the volume. Not sure why Enyas are typically lower volume but of the several models I have tried the pleasant sound, appearance, price and good construction make them very good choices.

Recently acquired a Enya EUT-M6 with no expectations, yet have been immensely impressed with the quality, tone, strings, and playability of this exquisite instrument. It is solid mahogany yet still bright and sharp. I paid around 158 quid (a little over $200) but would put it against a grade or two higher Kala, Kanila, Lanikai, Ohana, or even a Martin. I think I understand why Taimane has a signature ukulele with them. Super impressive gig bag came with it as well (like a tweed finish with internal buffers for neck and body). Would have been satisfied with the purchase if the price has been double.

I have the all solid mahogany concert version with blue finish although it looks green because of the blue over the goldenish mahogany I guess. Laid-back is the word for the tone. Perhaps the thick finish hampers it a bit. Pleasant enough though and if it were my only ukulele, I wouldn't know it was "laid-back" without the comparison. I must say I love the neck and especially the 38mm nut width. I don't reach for it much because I wish the sound were more dynamic.

This, except a concert and in blue, was my second uke. Bought it from Amazon in 2018 (my excuse is that it was before I discovered your channel 😊). I must say it’s never been a favorite. First, the blue edition is really gorgeous when new, but within a year it went all green in spots, and by now it’s mostly brown with some green tint. In case anyone imagines this as being pretty, it isn’t, I wouldn’t buy it in this state.
Also, you mention the tuners being good, which isn’t something I’d say about mine. They hold alright, but the buttons themselves have a bit of play, the kind-of wobble loosely a bit, which sometimes ends up causing a buzz while playing. This of course may have improved over the years, although the tuners look identical to those in your video.
Lessons learned: one, never buy from Amazon (duh!). Two, never buy tinted ukes.
And yes, it sounds exactly how you describe it. With my fingers I spied a thin piece of wood glued to the underside of the top around the soundhole - out of my 7 ukes it’s the only one that has this sort of thing. Could this extra layer be responsible for holding the uke back?

I hear that blue stain ukes do indeed change colour - a shame - not restricted to Enya either - Flight have had issues. Tuners on this are clearly good quality - no wobble as clamped both ends.
I suspect the wood inside you can feel is a strengthening piece to protect edge of sound hole. Actually quite common. Not sure that would affect volume as most of that comes from the lower bout.

Can I ask what is the best average priced acoustic-electric ukulele?

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

No answer to that - hundreds of them out there and ultimate choices are purely subjective.
Take a look at my full review list linked below video - anything scored about 9 is worth attention

What a beautiful uke. I think it would show cat fur on it in my house. 😄

I've got 2 of them. I love them, they are very well made, except the fretboard and the frets that become sharp with time.
The wood for the fretboard is cheap and not good quality it's not dry and hard enough.
And I think that the stock Titanium strings are really not a good choice.
Switch them for Fluorocarbon will the best choice to get the best sound out of this instrument.

The fretboard is made of Richlite composite - not sure how that changes over time as it's in a resin?

A stunning looking ukulele. Like a baby grand piano. Maybe we should title this ukulele to be a “baby grand uke.”
The sound was OK. Just OK.
    Great review.
Enya seems to be developing into a juggernaut in the industry.

Thank you for your comprehensive and standardized reviews. I purchased the soprano "Mahi Mahi" ukelele. This is very picky picky but I noticed just now that the tuner is on the head of the uke. Although miniscule, it can have an effect on the tone, the balance and the overall feel of the uke. It should be consistently left off the head during the test review.
Thank you for your fine work!

Hmmm - If I was recording for a lossless musical recital or a scientific test - perhaps (though doubt it) - but considering how much processing and compression TH-cam apply to videos when they are uploading (over which we have no control) - I very much doubt it has any difference to the video that can be discerned. As for balance and feel - the tuners I use are very light weight!

im looking to purchase a new soprano uke around the $250 price range do you have any recommendations

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I do get asked this sort of question a lot, but actually have a policy of not giving recommendations.

Not me trying to be difficult, it’s just that it’s really subjective and different for everyone - we all hear and play differently, but also people have their own preferences on looks, scales, features, decoration etc.

What I can advise is that you look at the full review list - www.gotaukulele.com/p/ukulele-reviews.html and look at the scores. Anything 8 out of 10 or above gets a recommendation from me one way or the other. Higher the score the better. BUT - higher is better only in MY opinion - you may find differently!

Hope that helps

B

@@GotAUkulele okay thanks for the reply, I've been enjoying my OXK concert uku by Martin for a while now, but I wanted a soprano for travel, having a hard time finding one that gives a similar sound quality though. I wouldn't hold you to any recommendations but you're more of an expert than I am. ill probably check out some more reviews you have posted thanks.
