Are they? This is the first I've heard from them but it seems like this dude is carrying the whole song. Don't get me wrong, it's catchy but it never goes anywhere. Math rock is cool but it still needs movement and three quarters through the song I still feel like I'm at the beginning

@@phillipduvall8638 Bro the Guitarrist Tosin Abasi literally created a technique called selective picking and took a not popular bass technique into his guitar playing, called thumping… the whole band does interesting things the whole time.
@phillipduvall8638 this song really showcases the drums. No question. Tosin Abasi is easily one of the greatest guitarists in history. Javier Reyes is underrated because he lives in Tosin's shadow but he is also incredibly talented. And that's the full band. You don't have to enjoy the music for this to be a true statement, either.
Man, it's such a treat seeing current Matt's approach to his older songs. Definitely keeping it true to the original, but kicking it up just enough to hit that sweet spot and see his progression over the last few years. Cant wait to see more!
I love this because I've been watching all the live footage and he plays the solo different every time and just certain parts are very different from the recording (esp the ending).
This is a way more eloquent way of saying what went through my mind while watching this which was "OH MY GOD THIS MELTS" haha
Exactly my thoughts. You can see the different things that he hears in the song and the different things he can play ten years later.
His first Phys Ed playthrough for Meinl was exquisite. This one is pure 🔥🔥🔥. What is awesome is that Matt has yet has to peak.

i'm not a drummer and I have no idea what exactly is happening rhythmically there but it's my favorite part of the playthrough. The effect it gives is incredibly satisfying.

@@IsraelIsLikeWater A player can sound different by playing differently, altering their Dynamics and feel. So if someone says "sonically" without highlighting a specific aspect of the player's playing, they probably mean the drum mix.

I'm what I consider to be a "hobbyist drummer", and by that standard, I'd say I'm pretty good. When I see a performance like this thought, it boggles my mind to think how much more work guys like Matt put into their craft than I do. For every hour I've ever practiced, I don't doubt that he's put in 100 or more. To be clear, this is not a "this guy makes me want to quit" comment. It's a "I'm so glad that artists like this exist" comment!

Long ago I was in a building, and heard this cat practicing.......like a different language taking you on a walk , polyrhythms, movements, phrasings, other words I dont know......holy fuckk I said often over 15 minutes...... a cornerstone man for hardwork, persistence, and bringing up the world ......hats off , the youth you are an inspiration to, in cutting the edge, and progressing exponential ❤ 🎶

It’s funny how hearing the little imperfections is so impressive because it shows there was no editing and he ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE THAT! He doesn’t require editing to damn near perfect, and it’s so cool to witness his progress from good, to great, to Demi-god, to one of a kind, and beyond.
He has great self control the way he goes from powerful to quick and precise was awesome. That’s particularly hard for me to do. It’s a completely mental thing for me. His self discipline is outstanding for this he doesn’t loose any control at all.

Don't remember where I heard it, but someone called Matt a truly 1 of a kind drummer. There might be people who can cover him, but I've never seen anyone compose drums like this. Dude's always pushing boundaries.

It’s so cool to see a drummer perform a song after they’ve been playing it for a few years. We all evolve and add in cool ideas that we didn’t think of when we recorded it initially. Matt absolutely crushed this

Matt is so fun to watch and listen to. Hits all of my favourite drumming styles/techniques, and then destroys my expectations. The sound techs also need praise for making this sound so incredible. Dry but powerful 🤌👌
