this man was born to study and perfect the art and craft of the drums, a true master of this instrument. it's such a rare thing and so beautiful and magical to see someone utterly dominate the kit with such complete independence and mastery of almost every possible rhythmic element. just extraordinary. He's the next Danny Carey for me, just pushing the genre to the limits!
The fill at 0:52 between the ride/hh/china is so subtle yet perfectly placed, I don't think it get's enough credit for how much of an impact it has on the track 🔥
As a drummer I’ve heard this song for about thousands times over. I cannot comprehend how hard this is to play. So advanced drumming and timing and yet a good song to listen to. I cannot believe how perfect Garstkas slow drumming is also. To play that fast and also mastering the slow part with pauses is insanely good. Is nice to read other peoples comments about which their favorites parts is in this song. It’s fun to rewind and listen carefully for those fills. My favourite part is at 3.32. I mean how beautiful can you make a drums sound like that! I got goosebumps every time!
There are probably less than a thousand people on this rock that have mastered drumming in such a way like Matt. Crazy to think about how lucky we are to live at the same time as this man.

i didn't notice how cool that part was the first time. those accents in the left hand make it so much more insane. sounds like 5 counts of 3 and then a count of 4 with that snare landing on the 4th beat, but it's 'prolly something way crazier

As a guitarist and bass guitarist, it’s funny how I’ve always loved the drummers most in AAL. First Navene and now Matt. These drummers have inspired me on so many levels with an instrument I know seemingly nothing about but they are just masters and such innovative writers as well.
As a huge fan of jazz, jazz fusion and metal (as well as being a very meh drummer) - this is just incredible. I cannot take my eyes or ears of Matt's playing, unbelievably complex from start to finish, yet sooo groovy! One of the truly special drummers on this planet
This guy is able to play up to 3 odd time signatures at the same time, Chew gum and his face is like he's having a day in the spa. ExquisitelyEffortless
I love this. As much as I also love the more crazy AAL songs, the toned down/intricate sound hits different for me. Especially love the double hit open hi-hat pattern - gives me Bonnie the Cat (Porcupine Tree) vibes.
And like in PT's song it's in 4/4 I think, with exception the whole phrase being two times longer. Not 100% sure though but great point with that hi-hat pattern similarity.

I love watching Matt play because it makes me want to play. There’s just something about feeling that flow when things become effortless and life just kinda pauses and it’s just you and the shreds of hickory flying off your sticks
Matt is so f'n creative. I love watching him play. Love the sound of all of his signature cymbals. I really want that shirt. I think he should sell his own Garstka tie-dye shirts. I know they would sell out in an instant. He's truly at the top of the food chain when it comes to drumming. Hats off! For us drum nerds, we are so fortunate to be living in the times of Garstka and Animals as Leaders. Props to Misha Mansoor as well.
The verse part starts with a bar of 7, then six bars of 8, then a bar of 9. It would simultaneously blow my mind AND not surprise me at all Matt's hearing and playing the full verses displaced forward by one beat.
The first minute and a half of this song is some of the most beautifully groovy and creative drumming ever. The rest of it is typically extraordinary, as is expected when you're dealing with Garstka. Also the fill at 0:51 is one of the most tasteful little patterns I've heard in a while.
I was about to comment this, when i first heard it on the album i was hoping to see it on the playthrough because it sounds so INTENTIONAL. Such a beautiful detail.
I was just studying this track today on the kit and really enjoy playing the synchopteradactyl breakdown. Was wondering about some things and so pleasantly surprised to find this manifested by my brain this evening.
The production in this is incredible. You can hear every bit of the kit with so much clarity and definition. It's like Matt is drumming in my room. So good with the HD681.
The way hes so relaxed and feeling the music is the one thing that always strikes me about matt. He’s definitely gained my respect as one of the elite drummers alive right now.

Maybe it's easy to overlook the fact what we listen today it' sampled edited and polished to a level which an amateur drummer like me can sound incredible. So looking him doing these things it's just simply amazing.
Like seriously if there were ever a demi-god, that's you Matt. The texture you're able to add is genuinely special to witness. Your drumming is what I imagine the musical equivalent of particle physicists discovering some ground breaking quality about fundamental particles and then stepping back to witness the planets move in a brilliant dance. There is a wealth of data to be had studying your every single beat, like they do in the LHC, and it makes it all the more rewarding when you step back and so how all of those individual tiny little components can all come together so harmoniously, with purpose, and HOT DAMN with precision. Thank you for another soundtrack for my thoughts to be able to move to.

Always played Zildjian Avedis and customs. I bought a Meinl ride about 15 years ago and fell in love the texture, look and feel. I have now built a new kit byzance all the way.
Saw Animals at the Brooklyn Bowl in Philly a couple months back. It was practically a religious experience. Talented doesn't really cover how fantastic musicians these dudes are. So good they somehow made an instrumental tune into a sing along.

And at 33 years old…he’s not that old. Still should have plenty of test in his system to perform like that. Easy. 405 deadlift takes like 1-2 years from absolute beginner if you’re training properly.

Not only exceptional musicianship, but damn I love the song composition as well; it feels very organic/grooving and not overly progy / mathmathical / lacking heart. You might just have to grab a singer one day - I swear I could hear voices on this one. Well done.
