At first, I didn't know what I was hearing... then I turned down the lights, sat myself down and closed my eyes. Glorious. Thank you for introducing this new type of music to me. Absolutely stunning.
Brilliant. He's a beautiful singer, and i love the creative arrangements of folk songs that he does and that he's collected the songs himself. And the throat singing (?) at the end!
Mike H - he did the same when I saw him at Shoreham's Ropetackle a few years ago - the entire show was brilliant from beginning to end - and the fact that he had come straight from the forest where he'd been singing with the nightingales at a secret camp somewhere just made it all the better!! The polyphonic singing isn't that hard to do actually: it takes practise to get the overtones (high notes) to really come out loudly but once you have the technique it can be practised in the shower etc. Good fun!! It's to do with the shape of the inside of the mouth: there are tutorials here on youtube!!
Magnifique, envoûtant. Justesse, équilibre, harmonie. Quel bonheur pour les oreilles ! Je viens de passer ma soirée à découvrir Sam Lee (and friends). Bravo à tous !
A wonderful expression of folk music. I agree that Sam Lee was the man sent to be the gathering preservationist force in preserving this wonderful music. A way of telling stories and passing them on to future generations.
I'm not sure why people would dislike this. They did a beautiful job of preserving an old style of music that has influenced much of the music we listen to now.
Ah Sam and friends...beautiful! Please come back to Ireland and stay in Bray/ Greystones so we can hear your voices and music! We'll repay you with sea swims, good food and life long friends! let me know what you think cheers Bar x
Amazing performance and music, completely astonishing, like usual with Tiny Desk. I must say tho, that it seems like the video is a bit delayed from the sound.
Jadon Sancho's packed his bags, he's set to leave, Off to Chelsea now, with goals to achieve. From Manchester's red, to Chelsea's blue, A fresh start awaits, a dream to pursue. No more the bench, he'll be in the mix, With Chelsea's squad, performing new tricks. From United's grasp, to London’s embrace, Sancho's journey takes on a new place. Fans of the Blues are eager to see, How Jadon will shine, and what he can be. A loan spell now, but who can tell, If Chelsea might just cast their spell? So here's to Sancho, on this bold new quest, May he find his form, and play his best. Leaving Manchester, for a new London scene, Jadon Sancho in Chelsea blue, a sight to be seen.
If English people speak about Gypsies, I don't think they are talking specifically about Roma and Sinti. The Gypsy Sam Lee is talking about has an English name and the song is English too. I think he is pointing travelling English people with their own culture and communities
+nevskipazza he comes across very pretentious when watching it, but I'm glad he is, because we get some incredibly beautiful almost lost in time music from it.
+nevskipazza , I don't know how much you have heard of him, he was recently interviewed on bbc radio, after a very succesfull gig, and he went into who his sources were, in quite great depth, it was fascinating, it used to be the usual way of collecting songs in the folk tradition. If the people he was collecting from had thought he was not genuine, there is no way he would have been welcomed amongst them. Another point, Lee is a gypsy surname, so I would not be surprised if there was some connection here. By the way, gypsy is a bit of a catch all word, the roma called themselves little egyptians, possibly to give them a biblical provenance, and can also mean traveller, and then there is the issue of where the roma, hail from originally, which, it seems, may be india, and we are talking wayback, every country in europe has gypsies. I obviously do not know your knowledge of folk traditions, enlighten us. And by the way, try getting a ticket to his gigs! I must point out, the people he is learning the songs from had to develop a certain style of delivery, a personal angle, to gain attention, and was signature, so it could not be pinched and his style exactly captures it, moreover, it is very difficult to phrase this singing, and I certainly appreciate that in him as well.
He is my neighbour and is one of the nicest guys you could meet. Also he is the son of jewish immigrants. He really loves this musi and it is all completely from the heart.
isn't it strange that there is always somebody who loves these old traditional songs, preserving and performing them. Perfect!
Here in 2024. IG ad broght me to Sam Lee's Sweet Lemmeney and comment form there brought me here. What a wonderful voice and musicians. Thank you.

The overtone/throat singing at the end was a great surprise!
+bobmcgarity Yeah he's got great control of the overtones!
+bobmcgarity It was such an amazing surprise. Put a grin on my face in the middle of some super frustrating programming homework, which is hard to do!
Magnifique, envoûtant. Justesse, équilibre, harmonie. Quel bonheur pour les oreilles !
Je viens de passer ma soirée à découvrir Sam Lee (and friends). Bravo à tous !
I think this is one of my favorite things I've listened to in a little while.
Same here.
Still listening in late 2022, amazing
Fabulous. I have been listening to Sam Lee's Radio 4 series (in the UK) about song collecting and that brought me here.
A wonderful expression of folk music. I agree that Sam Lee was the man sent to be the gathering preservationist force in preserving this wonderful music. A way of telling stories and passing them on to future generations.

+HudAndSons Probably because he dared to make a mild political statement.
Alan Esh Yea sounds about right lol
A few artists in recent years where I genuinely can't wait for their new records...PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Goldfrapp, Laura Marling, Sam Lee.

Flippin' exquisite.
The ever-talented Sam Lee; he has a "fiddle" in his voice!
never seen someone play the briefcase like that !
It's a Shruti Box
Excellent! What a voice!
I’ve come back to listen :)
Amazing performance and music, completely astonishing, like usual with Tiny Desk.
I must say tho, that it seems like the video is a bit delayed from the sound.
Great music! Pretty fancy fiddling and vocals.

Stunning!
The frequency has to be one of Love because I’m crying and I don’t know why…..
love the overtone singing at the end - I can do this but my overtones aren't as loud - but then he does have a mic!!
what a song what a voice so rich
My darling such a beautiful song .
tibetan throat singin...woot!
awesome!
Truly haunting and beautiful.
Lovely!

In the Uk it is correct to call Roma and Sinti as gypsies, other travellers are not.
Amazing!...I want to know one thing and one thing only.........Where can I get that sweet-sweet shirt?!!!
Fantastic.
WOW!
reminds me of Jethro Tull
Yes Sam!
I need that shirt!
Wow. just wow
The songs are beautiful without a doubt, but how about that shirt? Mon Dieu.
What brand and tuning is that Shruti that Sam plays?
He reminds me of Bert Jansch very much
There is definitely a lot of talent here, and I really admire them for trying to make these things live on, but it's just not my cup of tea.
Those overtones were filthy.
What instrument is he, Sam in blue, playing that folds almost looks like an accordion?
Fucking amazing!
does anyone know what instrument Mr lee is playing?
Something Nick Drake in that voice of his.
That's a fine shirt, Mr Lee.
What is the instrument that Sam is playing?
Hermoso.
Wow
He reminds me of Ed Droste from Grizzly Bear.
What the heck did I just listen to? It sounded like middle-eastern/celtic folk songs.
+LukeTheDuke93 Middle eastern? What? Why the hell would you associate this to the middle east? >.
+LukeTheDuke93 Reading the description is often helpful
idk. Just thinking out loud.
nice shirt Sam
Anyone know where the shirt is from?
Great ! Is he Jenson Button's bro ?
51tomtomtom I wondered the same thing! He looks like Jenson and has the same accent.
Anyone kwnos whats that instrument called Sam is playing?
Anyone know what that single note drone instrument he played at the end was called. I need one, desperately.
+James Oden shruti box
I can now predict what my next instrument may be.
Please have Carly Rae Jepsen! I heard her piece on NPR last week, and her new album is phenomenal.
I hear like a mixture between Cat Stevens and Nick Drake. With a blend of old tales.
wow. what control he has over the overall sound! I think thats uncommon for a folk project. he sounds like a more genuine version of Johnny Flynn
This was better than expected, given the off-pitch singing at the beginning
It's like the Bee Gees with no sex appeal or groove.....
pretentious middle class twoddle, but the last one was nice.

Folk music comes from the poorest level of society, sadly it is only educated people that are preserving it.
Pretentious???? How can genuine traditional folk songs be pretentious?
🤮
