Restoration - Iron American Machine CROWN 1875

  • In today's video, we refurbish an old Crown consumer brand crepe iron.
    It was patented in 1875.
The manufacturer of this crepe iron was the American company North Bros, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The firm was founded in 1878 as a foundry owned by Selden Gladwin North.
In 1880, Selden was joined by his brother Ralph and the North Brothers Manufacturing Company was formed.
The company began to specialize in the production of hand tools, small appliances and some power tools.
They are best known for their line of tools,, Yankee,,
This iron was most popular in the years 1860-1880 when it was used on collars, ruffles, cuffs, which were detachable for more frequent washing.
    And how did it work?
This crepe iron has hollow corrugated rollers.
Heated logs were inserted into the cylinders.
The rollers heated up and the fabric became more sensitive and shaped better.
A creasing effect was created. (creasing)
And now we will test our iron.
Use the lower lever to release the upper pressure roller
    Then we fix.
We insert the fabric, in our case paper.
We release the upper cylinder and fix it again.
Using a crank, we turn the cylinders, where subsequent scoring occurs.
The test of our iron turned out to be excellent.
Both hot on fabric and cold on paper.
    And that's all for today.

Another excellent restoration. I really like your attention to the detail work. Also, the gold accent paint really adds to the attractiveness of the press. I think many restorers would have avoided this project because of broken and missing parts. I'm glad it was restored by such capable restorers. Thanks and smiles from the USA.

I don't believe I've seen on of these before. I'm pretty sure my Grandmother would talk about all these diffrent Machines that my Great Great Grandparents would talk about. To understand this my Grandmother was raised by her Grandparents because my Great Grandmother passed away when my Grandmother was only 12 yrs old. Thank you so much for Sharing your Amazing passion with us. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Another beautiful restoration. So complete and well done.Having the history and use explainedwas very worth while. I'm a fan of North Brothers and have several push action Yankee screwdrivers from the late 1800s I still use. Stanley tools would eventually take over the Yankee brand

Do you have a metal bassoon? I saw one online, from the late 1800s, French system. I bet it sounds terrible.

    • @deeskinner9014
      @deeskinner9014 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ronm3245 Oh goodness! No, my bassoons are wood; the 'new one' (built in 1986) is maple and the 'old one' (built in 1900) I think is cherry. Not sure about that, but it is a fun horn to play!
I wonder of the one you saw was from the Boehm system? The story I heard (back in grad school) was Boehm presented a new fingering system at the World Exhibition in London 1851, but the keywork made more noise than the instrument!
      Still, a metal bassoon ... (>.
